Stressed

Foi,

If I can give them up so can you - I found an Inhalator (rubbish name, good product) worked for me. My brother is on patches at the moment and seems to be doing OK - so they're to be recommended as well. We both had a relapse on Christmas Eve but, hey, it was Christmas and we were well wellied (not ever so proud of it btw). The first week is the worst, babe - once you get past that and you, your breath and your house (not to mention your clothes) smell better - you will notice that the fags are not as attractive any more.

And if you fall off the wagon - it's a temporary set back so just get back on again. Anyway, if you really have to, better ten cigs a month than ten a day. But best of all is no cigs a day and take it a day at a time (sorry if it sounds cliched - but it works for me)

Ive decided after reading this thread im going to give up smoking, ive been smoking for about ten years now and never really thought about quitting because i knew i wouldnt be able to do it, but after reading what Charisma and the rest of you guys wrote im gonna try...
Good luck Foi if you need to shout at someone PM me🙂

I was smoking for 8 years, gave it up for all of three months, smoked for another 2 years, and then gave it up again. Haven't had a smoke in a year. The funny thing is, it still feels like a possibility, and having talked to a few ex-smokers they all tell me the same thing, that it'd be fairly easy to smoke again.

It seems like the first 3 days was the hardest (the twitchy, zoning out kind of feeling you get where you can't concentrate, and you always feel like your looking for something, but don't always know what it is). But after about 7 days that went away completely, and it was just a matter of wanting to fill those dead spots in a day with something to do, and feeling like I needed a smoke whenever I was stressed or was doing something like drinking coffee, beer or whatever. That got easier after about 3 months though, and I've heard that's roughly how long it takes to break a habit (can't say if that's true or not).

I wish you strength, but if you do fail, start quitting again right away. It gets easier to do, knowing what's ahead.

aww thats so sweet of all of you...it helps you know to get support, to listen to others etc...last time i gave up it was for 3 years then i started again about 3 years ago...it was just will power and a b/f that didnt smoke...

this time its hard as everyone around me smoke, i am screwed up mentally over my life and where i am going etc, so i think this time i might go get some patches or that fake fag thing...i know i need to get extra help this time.... oh well...

good for you sexy babe!!

Foi,
Like Khaych said above - the craving will stay with you but you just need to deal with it in a different way. It does lessen the longer you stay stopped though. Although I found today, after having a family lunch in our local pub I really fancied a smoke - I just didn't have one and played with the Boy instead.

You'll never be a non-smoker but just try to stick with being an ex-smoker.

I did find a list of all the benefits, over time, of quitting and I'll post a link here for you when I find it again - Good luck sweetie.

Here we go, found something after a quick Google (fnarr, fnarr 🙂)

Try this link -

and learn the bit headed Beneficial health changes when you stop smoking to let you know how much better you'll feel over different periods of time.
Jeez, I'm setting bloody homework now - once a teacher/trainer...😉

good luck w/ the quiting foi! Like other people said, it's important that you quit sometime...and it's a great new years resolution! Good luck!

Congrats FOI!!!! I am also quitting smoking. It's been 18 hours since my last cigarette! And I want one SO badly it's not even funny. SIGH!

Keep me posted on how you do!

have you seen the billboard ads for smoking!? the cig is cut open and there is an artery inside lookin all skanky. i think it's a pretty good ad tho trying to disencourage people from smoking.

Have you ever been a smoker Lorne?

Yeah, I'm on and off like every 3 or 4 months... I get bored with things quite fast. But it's wierd because I've never thought of quitting, and yet I stop doing it for months at a time with no reason at all.

For example, now I have like a month without smoking.

Lorne,
it sounds like you're not an addict yet then - my advice would be to stay quit rather than face the medical probs that will occur later in life...for example, I am now on medication because of high blood pressure and am likely to be on it for the forseeable future. It's not solely because of the smoking but my doctor says it was a major contributory factor.
I'm feeling particularly guilty tonight because I relapsed big time tonight after we went out drinking with smoking friends 🙁 Back to the cold turkey tomorrow - apt after Christmas 🙂

That's not what I don't get, I'm never going to fully quit just as I'm never going to fully smoke, it may hurt me? yeah, sure whatever, I'll still be worm food in the long run.

I just find it pointless, if you really, and I mean really, want to quit something, you go and do it, if you are not strong enough, you go and find the help required. If you say "I'm gonna stop smoking" out of the blue, just because you felt like quitting now, it's more than obvious you won't get through it. Which is what I don't get.
