So I have only watched a few episodes of SPN with Buffy stars. (One with Amber Benson and one with James and Charisma 😂😂😂)
But currently I am on youtube and watching many SPN panels on comic cons and I really like it, it's so funny😂😂 And I'm watching some fan videos of Destiel... 😂😂💕
And videos with funny moments and Felicia Day scenes...
Yeah, so I seem to really like those, but I'm still not sure if I wanna watch 15 seasons!!!!😅
What do you guys say? Would you recommend to watch all episodes? Or can you tell me some episodes that I need to watch? Also I NEED to know which episode it is, where they read fanfiction about themselves and talk about ship names etc! It's hilariouse!!!!😂😂😂
And btw why I'm making such a big deal about starting a show is because I have to buy all DVDs then cause I don't have netflix or anything like that.
But anyways at least I love the SPN conventions on YouTube😂😂😂
 
I mean, my answer is pretty clear to others on this board, since Supernatural is my favorite TV show of all time. While BtVS probably wouldn't even make it to my top 10 (though Angel would be no. 6). So, obviously, I would say watch it all but I suppose it is a lot of money if you're not sure.

Why not buy 1 season at a time? That's what I did (well, I bought S1, then loved it so much that halfway through I bought 2-4 immediately, lol).

I will say this, though (since you may have heard differently from others); being a Whedon fan won't ensure you'll love this show. Most of what I love about SPN is how it isn't like BtVS; the humor is different, the lore (monster stuff) is very different, it's darker (both in tone and look), there is no female protagonist to speak of and (upcoming spoiler, which I sense you care little about, lol) death means little and resurrections are commonplace.

What it does have in common with BtVS is; well-written, both dialogue and the world it slowly creates and enlarges, a message of family, both blood-relations and those you choose yourself and, of course, fighting monsters.

I think it's beyond brilliant, some would tell you to only watch the first 5 seasons, others think it's pure shite; it really is up to you 🙂

(also, plenty of episodes contain mention of the fandom, however, I believe the one you spoke of is S4's wonderful episode The Monster at the End of This Book. Another fandom heavy one is S10's aptly titled Fan Fiction)

I would be amazed if SPN is better than Buffy personally. Having as many as 12 seasons works against it I think.
I do enjoy it, the first 5 seasons have a clear arc, season 6 is a bit like Buffy season 4 where it's trying to get it's bearings again but it quickly picks up again after that.

Adding on there's one episode that you can easily skip, season 9 episode 20! Such a pointless episode! Season 1 feels more horror and darker than the rest, it does have light moments but they were trying out to see what worked in that season. It's also a show that's not afraid to make fun of itself, and has a lot of comedy moments.

Yeah, I think it certainly is better than Buffy. The other thing to keep in mind is when the showrunners change, the show changes. At least it seemed that way to me. But that helped keep it fresh and sorta new while still feeling familiar and comfortable.
 
Its worth noting that when Eric Kripke and Joss handed over the reins to a chick, their shows went downhill...but at least Buffy didn't stay on FOREVER.

S6 Buffy gets better every time I watch it. That chick has you call her wrote some great episodes. She's gone on to good stuff post-Buffy too.
Don't listen to ABS, the issues with S6 and S7 are not the fault of Sera Gamble. If anything, her stepping down as writer was a mistake, as she was one of the best writers in the previous 5 seasons.

I loved seasons 1-5, fall in with the bandwagon regarding seasons suck, I mean six and seven, 😛 but I did keep watching (after a couple of years break) and it still entertains me a lot. I still love the characters. I'm still way behind, but I do feel like the only reason I'm not watching this show all the time is lack of availability online, not the quality of the show itself. So I say - go for it! Watch all fifteen seasons! 🙂

Once the skirts took over it really went downhill. And they wonder why they couldn't get the skirt-focused spinoff made which was nothing more than a Y chromosome lacking inferior copy of the original.

That's more along the lines of what you really wanted to say, wasn't it?

I agree with that. Couldn't stand those two. Can't even remember their names.

I would've preferred Ghostfacers having a show on TV, not just the web.
 
Only started watching it this year and currently on Season 5. I do like it a lot, it's below the Buffyverse but above Charmed in terms of 'demon fighting' series for want of a better term. The central two characters are likeable (particularly Dean, who almost makes me wish I had siblings) and the lore is complex but well explored. It also has some very fun humour and standalone episodes. I kind of preferred it before the angels got tons of focus because that kind of took away from the horror stuff, but it's still very entertaining. I'd recommend it, but be warned: the first 6 or so episodes are hit and miss with the exception of Bloody Mary and Hook Man.
 
The downfall of Supernatural was when they dove into the Angel mythology. This is quite annoying as Kripke initially did not envision angels being a part of the show, which is how season 1’s “Faith” came about. I haven’t watched this current season yet but I from what I hear a past character is revealed to be “God” and I rolled my eyes so hard when I found that out. Seasons 1-5 are really the best seasons. It had solid direction. After that, there are gem episodes, but usually those are the non-mythology episodes. I also haven’t watched past season 10 so I really don’t know anything about the last 5 years.
 
As others have said, Seasons 1 - 5 are the most worth watching. They're a complete arc and bring the show full-circle and anything after that feels kind of redundant (and post-Season 5 the characterisation keeps going around in circles, which gets grating). That being said, the later episodes are still entertaining, if a bit repetitive, but there are some gems hidden in the later seasons, such as the cartoon episode where they end up in a Scooby Doo episode.

Completely agree 😀

I adore the humour of the later seasons. It becomes somewhat self aware and that is attractive to me in a show when it is is done in this degree. Season 6 was a hard slog to get through, but I think it picked up after that again, and considering the arc that season 6 came after - it is not a surprise that people see this as poor in comparison. It is far more consistent than recent shows. Over 15 seasons it was bound to get a bit soapy, but I am a fan of that too.

As for stand alone episodes, there are a ton. I just dont know the names of all them 😛 I am sick of season 1-3 but I find that the same in other shows, I don't enjoy them until they hit their stride (Grimm and Teen Wolf didnt appeal to me until season 4). As others have mentioned s4-5 are a peak and I love season 10 too. I want to re-watch season 7 because I believe it was cleverer than given credit for. I get a bit sick of Lucifer and Cas in the later season but on the other hand, they are fun to have around.

Baby - the story of the car
Hammer of the Gods - is a fave of mine
The one where Dean dies every tuesday is a laugh, so is Dog Dean Afternoon and Rock and a Hard Place (I like funny Dean)
Slumber Party - has Charlie (Felicia Day) in it
A Most Holy Man - one of the standouts of the later seasons for me - more so the dialogue.
Mint Condition - fantastic fun

The boys work hard at conventions and for the fandom on a whole. I think you would really enjoy it @Willow Tara. I appreciate the work they have put in and will support hard working actors and production teams like that.

S7 is underrated, much better than S6 :D
Julie Benz and Amy Acker are both in season 1 too, then of course Mark Shepherd becomes a regular later on, lots of whedonverse people.

Season 6 has some great episodes, Weekend at Bobby's, Clap Your Hands If You Believe, The French Mistake, My Heart Will Go On, Frontierland. I want to rewatch season 6 now!
