The beach (or maybe just the local pool, if you're landlocked) = summer fun.

Beachwear, however, is not so fun. It sends shivers of fear and shame down even the most well-sculpted backs. Thin ladies worry about a lack of curves. Curvy ladies worry about an excess of curves. Men worry about beer bellies or, alternatively, scrawniness. Pale folks worry about blinding their fellow beach goers, not to mention turning as red as Sebastian the crab. Tan people worry about tan lines. The point here is that very few people think they look good in a suit.

So I decided to open a thread asking what your suit looks like, why you chose it, and whether or not it will stop you from going out onto the beach this year.

I'll start: My suit is a bright blue bikini. I have two sets of bottoms, both of them bikini briefs. One fits sorta like underwear, while the other ties at the hip. I usually switch these out depending on how confident I feel about my hips that day. The top has an underwire and fits like a push-up bra top. Sometimes, I wear a little white skirt over the bottom of my suit (if I'm not full-on swimming, for instance). Basically, my suit is like a bright blue pair of underwear. lol. I love it, though, because it feels as comfortable as underwear, too, and makes me feel more confident and free than wearing something that's cut high on the thighs or stretches across my midsection or something. I usually feel really nervous about putting it on and going out in public but, whenever I do, I look in the mirror and I look at the other women around me and I think, "Hey... I look kinda pretty in this!"

That said, I'm crazy pale and burn like a freak, so suit or no suit, I tend to slather on the sunscreen and cover up as much as possible whenever I'm on the beach. I prefer swimming at night. Then, my milky skin is all sexy and glowy and alluring, and hey -- bonus -- no sunburn blisters!

Well me and my friend are going to tenerife in october , and iam slightly dispointed that we won't be there on halloween lol
Well i do get to see where planet of the apes was filmed x

My costume is black with white stripes , it is annoying cause it slips of my shoulder. It does this because i have a muscle missing from my right shoulder x

I do have another costume that is blue and brown, it doesn't have that problem because its a halterneck x

I have a one-piece blue thing. I very rarely go swimming, so it's mostly for vacations and stuff--which I will not get to do this summer, so I probably won't be donning it. I'm not comfortable in a swimsuit cause I'm heavy and pasty. No fun.

Well I live in Ireland and for one reason or another the sun seems to have abandoned us🙁 Also I live at least an hour from the closest beach, which actually doesn't sound that bad but when you don't have a car it makes beach going very troublesome (<<<<<<Giles much? lol). So for those reasons alone I actually don't own a swimsuit anymore. However, I often catch myself gazing longingly at suits while shopping wishing I had reason to buy one, so if I had the chance to wear one it would be a bikini. I like the halter neck type bikini tops. I find them the most flattering (apparently they show off my shoulders *shrugs*) and well they give the girls a nice boost😉. Bottoms wise I'm not too fussy. I like the short short style alot but I'm cool with the traditional bikini bottoms too. Although I am anti-thong...just say no girls😉

Unfortunately I am hit with a plight that effects many of my people...I'm as pale as Angel and Spike! Me and tan are unmixy things so like PV if I swim it's either late in the evening or at night. Night swimming is the best! (and now the REM song is stuck in my head!)

Thank God my hubby and I are not alone in our plight of paleness. lol.
I'm going to Egypt this year and I'm dreading putting my swimsuit on. I don't know what it is, but I always feel self concious but maybe once I've gotten used to it I'll be fine. I have quite a few bikini's (my Mum bought them, I prefer tankini's), and my favourite is a white bikini with red prints on it. It looks really nice and different, and is quite summery. I have a nice black one too that sort of acts like a push up bra, I have a feeling that might be a bit flattering which is good.

Very nice thread PV. Sharing our...beach wear traumas. Haha.

Well, I've never really had a problem with paleness. I've grown-up in So Cal so I've always had a slight...well, not tan so much as...glow I guess. But in comparison to a lot of my friends when I was in high school I was deathly pale (As I've never been big on sunbathting). So paleness isn't an issue with me or tan lines since I don't bother whether I tan due to the aforementioned dislike of sunbathing, haha.

However, my main issue has always been...bikini bottoms. Like Kean, I have always been anti-thong! I tried one once a long time ago and the only thought that came into my head was 'How freakin' uncomfortable is this?!' and I also hate the ones that reveal too much. I mean it's not like I've ever had supermodel legs and butt so skimpy beach wear on le derrier was so not a preference for me. So what I always tend to get is either the short-shorts- they look neat and cute and make me look taller which is always a plus- or, like the bikini I have tucked away in a drawer presently, I have the skimpy style but I have a matching beach mini skirt. Just a little bit longer than the short-shorts but....a skirt. 😀.

Presently, the bikini, as I said is the short-skirt deal, and is a halter-neck top. But the coolest part is the halterneck has a detachable bottom so you can either have it as a typical bikini top, or have it like a haltertop giving the whole bikini a mini-beach dress look (Handy when you want to rush up away from the beach for some form of frozen summer-day holiday treat). It's green and white stripes...which makes it sound slightly like a brand of toothpaste, but it looks nice in reality. Haha.

But I don't think I shall be donning it this year. We will most likely be making some beach trips, but I'm still carrying around 'some' of that pregnancy weight, so I'll be just going for the nice spaghetti strap top, silk skirt and flip-flops deal this year. Next year? Who knows? Haha.

Total agreement with the thongs. Just say no. It disappoints the hubby, but that's just too bad. Those things are neither comfortable nor flattering.

One time we were at the beach with my little cousin, and we saw a lady in a thong and he yells at her (he was about 6) "hey, I can see your butt!!!" hehe, had to share the randomness.
Hhhmmmm.

I live on the beach, & I swim in the ocean & in my pool a lot - I tan semi-well (a honey-tan color), & I have almost as many suits as I have shoes. Bikinis & tankinis, mostly. I don't really go for malliots. I like the *mix-n-match* variety types. My favorite colors are pink & purple, but most of my swimsuits are black, red, and multi-color-stripes or hawaiian floweredy prints. I have two purple suits, one lavender color with a bikini bottom and two tops ( tankini top & a regular bra-top) and one dark plum with neon green piping. I have a pink crochet bikini, a neon pink swimskirt with triangle pink/orange/white top that is reversible (one side is flowers, the other is stripes). My favorite suit is a black crochet swimskirt (regular bikini bottom with crochet skirt sewn over) and a tankini triangle top that is black and purple paisley.

Whether I wear a bikini or tankini, I prefer the "bra type" as opposed to the triangle type because they fit better & don't bother my neck.

I could type all day about my different suits, but the fact is, I swim so much, a suit only last me one summer, so I buy a bunch each spring & just wear a different one each time out, until it's totally faded or stretched beyond wearing. Heh.... two summers ago, I had lost a great deal of weight, & my *old* swimsuit was faded... and a big wave knocked me down & my swimsuit bottom came off & nearly floated away. I had to swim out to get them... & then promptly went to the board walk to buy a NEW better fitting suit. LOL.

Wow. That sounds way more glamorous than my vampire-style swimming. Hehe.
A the beach, such a wonderful place. I don´t have a problem with what to wear, and it´s not because I´ve got a killerbody and loves to show it off. It´s just that I don´t go swimming. Simple as that. And it´s pointless to go to the beach at all since I get burned spending an hour in the shadows. So I haven´t been to the beach or a pool for the last 15 years or so. And for anybody who thinks that being in the water would "protect" you from the sun are wrong. It only doubles the exposure. So am I pale as a ghost? Well, most of me is. But since hiding my face from the sun all year round doesn´t work, it´s pretty red. It goes really well with my orange/ copper-coloured hair. It´s a really pretty sight.

I have on a few occasions gone swimming indoors and then I really don´t care what to wear as long is it´s not tight. I like a little freedom so to speak. So basically it´s just shorts. But to tell you the truth I try to avoid the situation as much as possible.

I feel ya on the getting burned part, man.
My swimsuit is black with white straps bikini and I hope I'll be using it sometimes this year. For now the weather is just crazy. For example less than half an hour ago it was warm and sunny and now it's all cloudy, windy and it looks like it's going to rain. The water in lakes is still too cold for me. I hope the rest of the summer won't be like this. But I'll probably go at the sea so I can go swimming there.
If it comes to tanning I tan very slowly. But it's good that I usually don't burn either.

As I'm finishing this post there's already raining outside. Damn weather.

I don't go to the beach much, not in this country at least. And I'd most likely catch hyperthermia swimming in the North Sea, lol!

I'm going on holiday this later in the year to Spain probably, haven't decided yet, so I will try my best to get a tan on the beach. I'm not really the bikini type but I haven't decided on holiday clothes yet, so I dunno, maybe.

I won't lie, I clicked on this topic with the expectation there would be pictures..

I look rather dashing in a blue green two piece. I do get funny looks though...

I used to use sunbeds a lot,(no I'm not gay). Too long in the sun and my nose burns. Small doses is good for me.

Ach, who am I kidding. I don't care a toss, I'm pissed at the missleading title.
As for sun cream, I've put it on other people but never myself. Not once.
Hell I'm Scottish, sun cream is a sacred Scottish ritual where hundreds of thousands pray at the same time of day for 3 months for there to be sun.

Swimsuit season, what a joke.

If you wants pics so bad, why don't YOU just show us some :p
Well my bikini is this dark blue with some multicolored shaky stripes. The top is neckholder (SO good with my breasts, lol, really makes them look better than these bra-like types) and the bottoms just, well, I don't actually know how to describe them. 'Normal' is the word that comes to my mind, lol. Well the problem is I don't know the English names for different types of bikini bottoms, all I can say is that thankfully it's NOT a thong. Those things just look so ugly (especially with my butt probably) and I can't really imagine wearing such a thing for a few hours time anyway. Plus, it would feel like the whole beach staring at my arse, which I don't really want.
I haven't actually been to the beach since Russia last september, but that's a different issue. I've been to the pool though. Haven't found a good one in Belgium yet, unfortunately.
Well, and now the issues. First, I also have this vamp skin thing going on. Really really pale. I tried sunbathing for some time in May but I didn't tan at all.
Then my second problem, my weight. I know I'm not actually fat, but I'm not really comfortable with my weight/body either. Well I don't have a problem showing my upper body, meaning belly and bikini tops off, so that's why whenever I wear my bikini it's likely I just wear that and put pants on. Because I really really hate my legs. They are just too fat for the rest of my body and it's noticeable because I'm rather tiny, so on my short legs you just realize how much fat there is easier.
Well from what I've heard all this cycling I've been doing recently makes them a bit better, but they still don't look nice imo. Also, I have this fear that my bottoms won't fit anymore if they do get into better shape. Because last time I was wearing them, they were already feeling a little loose, and I had only lost like 3 pounds.

Some pics of me, in a bathing suit, now that would be a sight. Toss in a wig, some lippy, a couple of melons, some strategic positioning and some pain, i could totally pull it off.

You said breasts. *embarrased chuckle*
Aaah a subject so close to my heart. Before I got preggo, I was 5'7" and 121 pounds. During pregnancy I was diagnosed with Gestational Graves Disease and my thyroid was shut down to prevent my baby from getting goiter (large growths on the neck) and the large bulbous eyes (and it worked so it was ALL worth it). BUT I put on over 100 pounds, topping out at 222 one week before I delivered (2 weeks after due date too). Anyways I have lost 95 pounds (go me!) BUT even though I only have a few pounds left, I just don't 'feel' right...my body doesn't looks the same. So bathing suit season is hard on me. My current suit is on the bottom: boy short cut, chocolate brown with a baby pink belt running round the waist. The top is a chocolate brown halter with pink piping. I love the suit but I am shopping for a tankini, mostly because I'm with my daughter in the water ALL the time and well..she grabs and pulls in my suit all the time and with the halter bikini top..it's low-cut enough without her yanking my 'girls' out of it! 😀 😀 I want to get a Land's End suit - I hear they are amazing! You can punch in your body type or your problem body parts and it suggests tops and bottoms for you!

What is this amazing creation you speak of?

Well even though in Australia it's the middle of winter I am going to Dubai for a week and I plan on spending a significant amount of time at my hotels pool drinking cocktails. I hate bather wearing just like most girls do. I hate my body, but what can you do?
I'm not looking forward to getting my pasty middle of winter legs out for the first time when I get to London either, I'm hoping I don't look to out of place!
I have a tankini for fat days and skimpy funky bikini for thin days. My skinny day bikini is completely amazing. It has little robots all over it in bright shades of blue, purple, blue and red. The top has one of those detachable halter necks so it can be a tube top as well. (Perfect for tanning!)

The last time I went swimming was... uhm... 18 years ago? So there hasn't been any swimwear in my closet since the early 90s.

Anyway, with my built it would be difficult to pull off wearing swimwear tastefully. I'd feel extremely uncomfortable walking around topless (my upper body shape is, uhm, rather female), and swimsuits for non-females are exceedingly rare (and, when seen, ridiculed to no end by all onlookers - remember Germany is one of those European countries with a firm history of "speedos for all weight classes"; this has changed a little since the time I last went swimming, but we do still have indoor pools where it's even forbidden to go swimming in bermudas instead of a speedo or, at the very most, tight shorts!).

Besides, being out in the sun would ruin my carefully nurtured crypt-dwelling paleness. (Which, btw, is something I actually like very much in women too. From what I've read here so far, I must agree to Schillaci's disappointment over no pics in the thread. 😉 )

So you want pictures, huh? Who am I kidding, of course I´d like pictures too. Since there aren´t any pictures of me in swimwear since the age of twelve or something like that and I don´t have a scanner I´ve decided to show you one of my university professors. Why? Just think the absolutely opposite and you get the idea. Unbenanntes Dokument Start scrolling! And just so you know, a couple of years ago I found way "worse" pictures. But they seem to be gone now. You´re really missing out. Let´s just say that saw him in a different light after that.

Okay, you want pictures? I will post one if we're allowed to. But I want mod confirmation first that we're really allowed to.

I found one, so I would too... if a mod gives the ok.
I'd like to join the pale brigade, too. I like to stay inside, since I don't like hot, sticky, super sunny days (maybe I'm a vampire...), I don't like tanning (I'd rather lay around doing nothing when there's air conditioning, thank you very much), my skin is very dry, and I burn really easily. I'm not that big, but I do have a rather...what's the word...womanly figure, and thanks to my increasingly low self esteem, I feel very uncomfortable when I'm around a bunch of super-skinny girls. In other words, I don't like the beach (the nearest one is about three hours away anyway), I don't like pools, and I definitely don't like swimsuit season.

But, in spite of it all, my friends make me go swimming with them all the time. Why can't they pick a new summer hobby, like sitting in a nice, cold basement watching Buffy DVDs? That sounds good to me!

I am gonna have to check out Land's End, though. That sounds pretty cool.
