Do you think that Giles should his present age, or return to his original age?

Personally, I think that he should spend at least most of this Season at his current age, then have him return to the "old" Giles as some sort of tie in with the Season finale.

I think he should stay young. (He should start growing up normally from this point, though.)

I think Joss was done with the "father figure" version of Giles and would have left him dead if he hadn't come up with the idea to "reboot" him this way.

Count me in as one of those who'd like him to grow older. Personally I'd have preferred him to have returned as a teenager If he'd had to be younger.

Thats a rather sad thing to hear. I'm sure they could have continued to expand his role further without resorting to this (imo) gimmick.

Firstly I'm hoping this is the last resurrection we see in the verse. All the meaning will be taken away from the death scenes if the character is guaranteed to pop up again at a later date.

As for Giles, well I'm really glad he's back. I think the deterioration of his and Buffy's relationship as been one of the saddest things in the verse and that's stretched back for years. I would like Giles to stay young and realise what a great and unique opportunity he has been given. He could be a great asset to the world for many years and I don't see why he'd rush to age himself.

Not Doyle. Considering this is now a comic franchise, I don't think deaths will ever be permanent.

did you say that expecting young Giles jokes, because if you did I would have to agree. Or put another more Australian way, yeah ripper mate.

I think that Giles should return to his original age and I'm dreading the hormone jokes. I don't see why we shouldn't have an older character in the comics and imho, one of the best pieces of writing in the comics so far was the Giles and Faith story by Brian K Vaughan. I think this story proves that 'older' Giles was not a redundant character - really lil' Giles is a bit too cutesy and a bit too much like Harry Potter.

I agree. Giles was fine the way he was.
You guys had better just resign yourselves to the inevitable, because the hormones are almost certainly going to be the subject of more than their fair share of jokes in the issues to come. The only real mystery is who those hormones are going to rage against first.

My vote is on Faith.

Probably one of the reasons Giles wanted to get away from Faith and back to Buffy.
Far less confusing. 🙂

So far though I think Lil' Giles fits in well with the Scoobies as is, they're all pretty much adults and I'm not sure if adult Giles would have much of a role.

I think if they had adult Giles come back he should go back to teaming up with Faith, they were one of the better things about Season 8.

Especially with Nick Brendon involved with the writing for a while. 😉

More realistically, an adult Giles would almost certainly see his first priority as reorganizing the Watchers' Council. Unless Caleb and the Bringers were taking out Watchers' agents (in particular, those tactical teams that Travers was talking about just before being blown up) there are still quite a few field agents scattered about all over the world , not to mention some very well padded bank accounts, the funds from which could be used to support the Slayers.

I think Giles pretty much divorced himself from all things Watcher's Council - I feel like that would be the last thing he'd want to do. Some sort of new team, maybe, but nothing called The Watcher's Council or any kind of reprise of it.

🙂

What would even be the point of the Watcher's Council at the moment?

What slayer is going to take orders from them? It's a brave new world, for better or worse, and I think Giles would find it a thankless and, quite frankly, redundant, task to recreate The Council.

Slayers are either doing their own thing, or finding gainful employment in the real world, they're not going to take orders from some old, crusty English guys.
Giles would do more good sticking with a slayer that both respects and needs him- which is Faith.

I bit OT but what the hell- It seems to me that the comic writers are really too scared of shaking up the status quo when it comes to Buffy and her group. She's still basically surrounded by the same people since S7 the core scoobies, Dawn, Spike and Andrew, ( 🙄 about those last two) and there seems no willingness to shake this up any time soon.
It's like 'she has to have Giles around. Why? There is pretty much no reason apart from Giles wish for familiar surroundings.

But look at Angel by contrast- he has none of his old gang around- no Gunn or Connor or Fred/Illyria. It's just him pretty much on his own, which he never was on his own show (apart from his short 'dark' phase)

I find that really kind of puzzling😕

I agree with you, but we have to read this loneliness as an integral part of the story. The absence of Gunn and Connor, the fact that he drinks more than he ever did in five years of ATS, are specific choices that belong to his actual arc story.

And that's why Angel & Faith is a better book than Buffy Season 10 😀

True. 🙂

I honestly think S9 of Buffy was so bad because it didn't take enough risks plot-wise, but also didn't shake up the casting enough. It was all about Buffy/Spike for pretty much half the season, and then they all get back together for the finale.
Add to that the new characters they introduced were utterly boring, (Billy? Why did Billy's intro need two whole issues?) and the introduction of Illyria was completely fluffed.

Angel and Faith was good because they took the effort to bring in new casting, whilst not forgetting about the old.
I thought Connor in A&F was a lot better handled than Illyria on Buffy.

And I really do get the whole 'Angel is on his own now' purpose in S10, my criticism was more levelled at Buffy having to have certain people around her all the time for no real reason.
(I'm cheifly thinking of Giles, Spike and Andrew- I genuinly don't know why they're there or what they bring to the group, apart from cutsey-ness/funny lines/extra muscle respectively)

Billy is terrible. I wish I could erase his existence from my mind lol
Giles has always been a teenager, now he's a teenager in a teenager's body and...this joke is seriously unfunny. Mostly, Giles needs to get a life, doesn't matter how old his body is. He serves no purpose and this is not a new problem, it's been like that since season 4. What is Giles' role? Buffy and Willow kick ass, muscles and magic. Xander's the Butt Monkey. Dawn is the token family member, I guess. Giles does what, research? Anybody can do that and since scoobies got old Giles can't even bullshit as an adult authority figure.

Give Giles a reason to hang out with Buffy. Why does she need him? Dawn is her sister. Xander is her best friend. Willow is her best friend and a witch. Giles is what? Watcher? Buffy doesn't need one. Father figure? Oh come on, she's too old for this crap.

Are you guys expecting Giles to hand over a CV in order to hang around with Buffy? He doesn't need a defined role in the group in order to simply be there. They've been through an awful lot together over 10 years and if they want to be around each other I don't see the problem. There's a family bond between the core four and I really don't see why Giles being with them would need a greater reason. I also think that he brings a different knowledge base and perspective that could be useful at any time.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't be there- he has a relationship with these people, I get that.

But, from a writing perspective, is this the best/most interesting thing they could be doing with the character? Can't they mix things up a bit, get new characters interacting with each other?

Get Connor meeting the Scoobies- that would be interesting. Or Gunn.
Have Willow move to magic town for a while- it's called magic town for Pete's sake! This is Willow we're talking about and she isn't geeking out over this?

Have Dawn meet and interact with Angel or Faith, don't make her only real interactions be with just Buffy and Xander, (or now just Buffy I guess...)

Basically there are two ways to make the comics interesting- plot and character. Switch things up, and maybe some of the ratings will improve- it would a least get people talking.
People are intrigued by some of the plotting, and thats great, but are they saying anything about the character interactions? I mean, at all?

Missed opportunity, that's all I'm saying. 🙁
