Are You Burning Out?
by Julie B. Thibodeaux, M.C.P.

Stress in the workplace can be a good thing. It can motivate us, energize us and help us to do our best work. However, for some, unrelieved work stress can lead to a debilitating condition called burnout. Burnout is characterized by a lack of energy, emotional exhaustion, job dissatisfaction, negativity, lowered resistance to illness, increased absenteeism, poor job performance and isolation.

Do you think that you may be burning out? Read each of the following questions and choose the response that represents what you most often feel. After answering all the questions, hit "Calculate Results," and check out your burnout potential.

____________________________________________________________

My result:

Your score indicates that you are burned out.

People who score in this range normally have a difficult time coping with the demands of daily life. They frequently feel overwhelmed, have little energy, are unable to manage stress effectively, have frequent somatic complaints and have a difficult time sleeping.

People who score in this range have difficulty setting realistic and attainable goals. They are pessimistic about their work and future. They are unable to relax and enjoy their down time; and therefore, they are not capable of separating work life and home life.

People who score in this range typically are not able to control and recognize their feelings or act on them appropriately. They have a hard time learning from their mistakes. They have a difficult time having compassion and respect for other people, and often feel isolated and alone.

People who score in this area typically start out as excellent workers. However, because of their desire to get ahead, they often are unable to control their workload. They become so overwhelmed that they lose their focus and are not able to do their best work. They can become confused about what is expected of them and become distressed when they are feel they are not living up to assumed expectations. They then become bitter, angry, and resentful.

However, there is hope for people with burnout so don't give up! It is possible to learn to enjoy your job again. People that score in this range can decrease their level of burnout by setting realistic work goals, taking time for themselves, exercising, changing jobs, reading books about beating burnout, joining a support group, keeping a journal, taking up a hobby, spending time with their families, defeating negative thoughts, becoming active in their church, synagogue, or other community activity, and, most importantly, by learning to say no.

We wish you the best of luck!

I guess I'm gonna need it!

I think it depends on how much you apply yourself to your work, and whether you actually care about grades. Also depends on what you are particularly doing, ie the level you are taking, but you certainly can burn out if you're working all the time. A former classmate of mine suffered a nervous breakdown because she worked so hard on her A Levels, she didn't do anything else, spending around 14 hours a day on her work and nothing else. Scary.....

I got : Your score indicates that you have some signs of burnout.
People who score in this range are fairly happy and well balanced people. They are normally full of energy and are able to meet the demands of daily life. They are often able to manage stress. They are usually able to set realistic and attainable goals. They are able to stay positive about their work and future. They usually are able to relax and enjoy their down time. More often than not, they are capable of separating work life and home life.

People who score in this range are able to control and recognize their feelings and act upon them appropriately. They usually learn from their mistakes. They generally have compassion and respect for other people. They are able to get along with their coworkers and enjoy being part of a team.

People who score in this area are able to control their workload and do their work to the best of their abilities. They know what is expected of them and live up to those expectations.

However, if you've scored in this range, you do have some potential of burnout. Please remember to do the following for yourself: set realistic work goals, take time for yourself, exercise, change jobs, read books about beating burnout, join a support group, keep a journal, take up a hobby, spend quality time with your family, defeat negative thoughts, becoming active in your church, synagogue, or other community activity and, most importantly, learn how to say no. If you do these things, we have no doubt you will continue to thrive!

And as a side note I took this test as a uni student, who has also been working a full time job alongside a full time law degree....

Sure school and work are comparable, both fill up your day with stuff you don't want to do, the stress factors are the same!

I think in some ways, school can be much more stressful than work. I do both, I'm a senior in college, and I work part time at a bank. For me, school is much more stressful. I'm pressured to do well by my father so much that I still haven't told him my grades from last semester.

It's hard when you know you've tried your best, but you still didn't do well to someone elses standards. Work, on the other hand, can be stressful, but at least you have more power over it, and less pressure to do well. The only person who really has any influence over the way work affects your life is yourself.

I agree, school can be WAY more stressful than work. With school, you have several unrelated classes that all expect you to take time out of class to complete things. With school you're never *away*, because most of the time you have homework to do. With work, any projects you have are usually related, and when you go home, you usually can leave work at work.

I got a degree in Computer Science, and I remember feeling so frusterated and inadequate because I would get stuck and feel like I didn't know stuff I should know. When I got my first programming job, I realized that getting stuck is part of the process of programming, and most of the time people were willing to help you get unstuck.

The type of stress between school and work is different, but I don't think anyone can really say working is harder than school, unless you slid by in school and then becoame an over achiever at work.

This sounds familiar, one of my biggest causes for stress!

Or unless you have a teaching-job!

First of all what in the heck is up with your attitude?

Second of all, I aint bragging cause I dont go to school anymore! I just made that as an example of a scheduel and everyone defines work differently, everyone can handle a different amount of pressure while others can handle significantly more.

Nowadays I dont work much, I dont go to school im relaxing after finishing highschool (yes you finish it early in Sweden).

And I dont like sports thanks, I think it pratically sux and is dead boring. Wish to attack me for that opinion? 😛 Besides, you only get the amount of work you put on yourself, no more no less.

I don't like sport either, too be honoust I hate it, but physical excirsizing (sp?) has nothing to do with stress!

And the attitude, cool down man! relax!
