The absolute worst season of Buffy

I think the trouble with Season 4 is that it followed on from the EPIC season 3, which was really difficult to measure up against. However, I think what [MENTION=10352]Chosen Enemy[/MENTION] says is really interesting and she does have a great point - the sense of disconnection is in keeping with the themes explored throughout.

Season 4 has one of my all time favourite episodes - Hush - so ill be greatful for that Season for that episode alone!

I actually thought this was one of best seasons of the show (if not the best). But I understand why some people think otherwise. At least it didn't have episodes like "Doublemeat Palace"! *shivers*
 
Season 4 had a lot of fantastic stand alone episodes. However, Like others have said some of the characters and plots of episodes weren't used to the best of their ability. Originally I hated the idea of the Initiative. I thought it was silly to involve the military in supernatural creatures. Over time Riley did start to grow on me and I have to say that I realized I do actually like him. He could have betrayed Buffy and continued working for the Initiative but he didn't. He helped rescue Oz and would do anything he had to to do the right thing. As far as him being controlled by Adam, That was not his fault. It was something that was done to him. The same as being a werewolf being something that was done to Oz. I loved Spike in this season. His lines were hilarious. The only thing about this season that REALLY annoyed me was Spike's chip. There were so many inconsistencies with the chip that it just became really silly and unreliable.

I don't like the title of this thread. I wish it was "The Absolute Least Greatest Season of Buffy."

And for me, that would be Season 1. 😉

That title is amazing.
I like season 4 a lot! Not my favorite, but not the worst. For me, that would be 8.
 
For me Season 7 was the worst, it felt like too many characters wwere being introduced to the show at once and the plot felt rushed (zomg the first is invinicble! We have to destroy the school along withe entire state with it!)
 
Season four was not the best but I dont think it was the worst either, I think it was because season three was so good that it was a bit of a let down to many people. For me the first season was the worst but that is just my opinion.
 
I thought Oh my god... what they did with the old Buffy characters and the history... if someone says that he hates BTVS and justifies it with season 4 I have to give him right ... 🙁
 
I think it gets some hate because it is when the show dramatically changed. (IMO for the better)

At first I wasn't enjoying it because I missed the Scoobies team and the feeling of seasons 2-3. But in time it grew on me and it eventually became my favorite season. While I don't really care for the Initiative...a ton of my favorite episodes are in this season. (So many hilarious ones)


I do agree with those that say season 1 and 7 are the worst. (6 was also horrible with the trio)

yep season 1 & 7 definitely!
I didn't mind season 4 to much, but as it's already been said it had a lot to live up to after season 3, and season 2 for that matter, which was always going to be hard to beat.

It had a few good moments, but i didn't rate it that highly.

Season 4 isn't the worst. That award goes to season 1. The writers were trying to find their footing, the actors were adjusting to their roles, and there's this unpleasant feeling of lameness and cheesiness that continues a little ways into season 2. Season 1 also has the misfortune of "I Robot, You Jane," the 'big bad Internet' episode, which I have been itching to break down in a blog post for years now. Oh, and there's also the mid-90s hair. Can't forget about that. 🙂

Season 4 is actually pretty good. It has a few of my favorites, like "Living Conditions" and "Something Blue." There was the "Harsh Light of Day" and the 2-part Faith revenge episode. Angel facing off with Riley was awesome. And "Hush." It has "Hush!" One of the best episodes in the series! Adam seemed like a big doofus at first, but he was scheming and calculating, indestructible, and for crying out loud he killed a child. You can't get much more uncomfortable than that. The first season of Angel started up during "Buffy" season 4 time and the "Buffy" and "Angel" shows crossed into each other several times in unique ways.

Now, it did get irritating when it took Buffy several episodes to get over Parker using her. "Pangs" (the Thanksgiving episode) was too preachy for me. "Beer Bad" was dumb but it had one of my favorite bewildered-Xander lines ("Giles, don't make Cave Slayer unhappy.") I didn't particularly care for the whole sci-fi/fantasy crossover but I could deal.

I like season four. I like the challenges is presents in college, and the high school gang drifting, something I'm going through myself. I really thought they did a good job with it. That being said, I hate Spike's chip, and Adam completely, but I LOVED the season finale! And, we got Hush this season. That was amazing!

I think s7 is the worst.

Season 4 is the worst for me as well.

However, it had some good episodes to counteract the horrible ones(Beer Bad, Fear itself, and oh GOD Restless).

Something Blue was a terribly funny episode. Hush was amazing, This year's girl and Who are you? Were excellent. Primeval was enjoyable for me because Adam finally went down.

I really hate Riley, and I think that's a good part in why I don't really like the season that much, and the scooby gang starts to drift apart, and also Oz leaves. I didn't like that.
 
I agree with a lot of the comments here - not my favourite but not the worst; it suffered from having to follow on from the epic Season 3; the overall 'big bad' arc wasn't executed that sharply; I didn't like the Scoobies drifting apart etc.

It was also a little thin on the angst and that's when Buffy's at it's best IMO. Moving away from the high school environment and locations didn't help as that had sort of made the show. It was all new and audience's needed to adjust - like that Scoobies.

I've always considered it one my least favourite story arc's of any season but when I think about it the season contains some amazing stand alone eps - from Hush, Restless to Faith's 2 parters. 'Pangs' and 'Something Blue' are madly funny too.

I'm re-watching it now for the first time in 4ish years and I'm surprised at how much empathy I'm feeling towards Riley. He annoyed me at first (cos I thought he was kind of straight-laced [and not Angel or Spike lol]) but now I think he's actually a lovely guy Buffy just wasn't ready for.
 
The only thing I really don't like about s4 is Angel apologizing to Buffy for not letting her emotionally abuse him in L.A.
 
Even at it's worst, Buffy is still better than most television series could ever dream of.

Personally I don't think there's a bad season of Buffy at all, some may have had arcs I didn't enjoy as much as others but that's just carping....


Watching Beer Bad right now and it always puts a smile on my face!

yeah, I love that ep!
I hated season 4 my first time watching it, but on rewatches it has grown to be my second favorite season. I think the writers were very brave to take Buffy to college, since most shows usually die once the show goes on to college.
