I was just watching The Pack, and it dawned on me that Xander was the first person to be held prisoner in the cage in the library. (Correct me if I'm wrong). Then it once again occurred to me... why is there a cage in the library? Granted Giles could have made some customizations when he moved in... after all, he does store weapons and a plethora of "specialized" literature in there... but it seems unlikely he would have had the time or the proper explanation for installing a cage. Nor would it seem like something he'd see necessary at the time.

The letter slot thing in the cage door makes me think this may have a traditional purpose. Has anyone seen this in real life? Does anyone know what its purpose might be?

Then it also struck me that it might be fun to compose a list of all the characters that have at one point been locked in the cage. So I want to go ahead and start this list, then I want you all to help me finish it! Copy the list and add a character that has been locked in (In the correct order). If a character has been locked in more than once, his or her name should appear that many times and in the appropriate slots. I don't expect this to be that short of a list, and I'm anxious to see the final draft!

I'll start.

1. Xander (The Pack)

I just did a quick search and found this page, Buffy's even mentioned in the article.

Book cage - LISWiki

Closed stacks that are locked off from public access by virtue of being placed inside a gated room (which usually looks like a jail cell).

Libraries use book cages for preservation and security of items that may not be tattle tagged. Special collections, loose-leaf items, archival materials, and maps may be found in library book cages.

As for the list of people kept in the cage...

2. Oz. Multiple times.

To consolidate (and after having just watched The Dark Age):

1. Xander (The Pack)
2. Vampire Willow (Dopplegangland)
3. Philip Henry (The Dark Age)
4. Oz (Episodes to be cited)
5. Giles (The Wish)

I'm watching the series from the beginning, so I figured I'd keep updating this list until it's complete. 🙂 I'm a little OCD like that. Anyway, I'm in season three, so it should be complete soon!

1. Xander (The Pack)
2. Vampire Willow (Dopplegangland)
3. Philip Henry (The Dark Age)
4. Oz (Beauty and the Beast)
5. Giles (The Wish)

Great post guys! And that's really interesting about the cage. I was going to guess that the building might have been old, and the cage might have been an old jail cell. But xanaphania's explaination is way better 🙂 Well, I guess the school building must be pretty old to even have one of those book cages at all!! Also, I'd like to point out how non-strong the cage is - at a few points it's destroyed, right? Must have been difficult to build it again.

Continuing the list:

1. Xander (The Pack)
2. Vampire Willow (Dopplegangland)
3. Philip Henry (The Dark Age)
4. Oz (Beauty and the Beast)
5. Giles (The Wish)
6. Veruca (Wild at Heart)

Continuing the list:

1. Xander (The Pack)
2. Vampire Willow (Dopplegangland)
3. Philip Henry (The Dark Age)
4. Oz (Beauty and the Beast)
5. Giles (The Wish)
6. Veruca (Wild at Heart)

Nothing to add (need to rewatch), just pointing out that Veruca wasn't locked in the library cage. The library cage was destroyed along with the High School.
She has been locked in some cage in a random crypt - though why there would be a cage in a crypt in the first place escapes me (except for locking Oz in, of course).

Good catch! Also, I love your sig quote.
This may be a bit of a stretch but in The Dark Age wasn't that Philip (i want to say Henry?) guy locked in the cage for a bit....that's the only other one i can think of...
