With #34 out, and Allie basically confirming that Buffy and Angel are, in fact, soul-mates, what does/could this mean for Spuffy?

As it's my favorite ship in the 'verse, I would be pained to see it go, but I don't think that's exactly the case here.

As any fan of Dawson's Creek would know, Katie Holmes didn't end up with her so-called other half (think Angel). She ended up with the underdog (think Spike.)

So, that said, I still think we have a lot more coming to Spuffy fans.

Thoughts?

I must say, 'shipping is NOT very important to me at the moment, at all. As a spuffy, I couldn't care less. I'm more concerned about what's happening to my characters and the entire MESSAGE of Buffy then anything else. 🙂

But as for your question, knowing JW, she's going out alone. After all, a Slayer is always alone in the end. 🙂

If they f*ck up Spike too i´m done with the comics.
I ship Bangel & Spuffy equally while being a Buffy Summers fangirl first and foremost. I'm still holding out for Angel/Buffy/Spike. Both Angel and Buffy have had dreams of a threesome of sorts. ha ha

I loved finding out that Angel and Buffy are literal soulmates and thought it made a lot of sense when you take into account that she could sense him when he was human, the bite mark from when he drank her blood is her only physical scar, he decided to stop living in alleyways and become someone after the PTB showed him Buffy, etc etc.

I do not think it is the end of Spuffy. I think that by Chosen Buffy loved Spike just as much as Angel. Her history with Spike is just as grande and complex and transformative. Spike gave her back the spark she felt was missing and healed her heart. He was the only other person she was ever able to say "I love you" to in a romantic way (that is huge!). I think that by the end of TGIQ Angel respected that Spike had something with Buffy that was just as real as what he had. I loved seeing them bond over their mutual love of Buffy and wanting to take down The Immortal.

Well said but the soulmates thing bugs me. I guess i will never get the whole Bangel thing even if i really tried to understand their love and realationship.

I am a Bangel, but I don't think this is the end of Spuffy. Joss has to spice it a little somehow and we all learned the best fights are in this love triangle, so I don't think he'll throw out Spuffy out of the picture. Well, not yet 😀

And about Dawson's Creek, that's just your perspective, because as far as I remember both 'ships had similar amount of fans, and as she ended up with the underdog, as you say, we can't say he wasn't her soulmate. That's something watchers persumed by watching.

She and Dawson always specifically said they were soulmates though. Even though Joey and Pacey were TOTALLY perfect for each other. =D
Spuffy ended with his death in the hellmouth. My personal ending is quite different but i will keep it to myself.

Right after his resurrection he asked where Buffy is and he thought about finding her but he knew he couldn´t just say "Hi i´m back from the dead" to her and everything will be fine and they finally get their happily ever after. This isn´t a fairytale.

Buffy is his love of his life and nothing will ever change that but he is also now a champion and he chose to continue the good fight. Of course i don´t think he never tried to reach her but Giles and Andrew had their own plans so they didn´t told him where she was.

Imho it´s the best for both of them. I love Buffy and Spike so much and seeing them fighting together side by side makes me happy but i don´t think they will ever be lovers again. It´s sad and it breakes my heart but i can´t see a future for Spuffy at least not in the comics.

Buffy deserves a normal lover without super powers. A human like Xander maybe.

Buffy has to be alone in the end. She is the slayer and the chosen one. She can´t live a normal life ever. She will go down fighting and maybe her friends and lovers are at her side but she is still alone when her time comes. That´s the life of a slayer and that´s how it always ends.

You fight alone and you die alone.

But that is what Buffy was trying to combat. The notion that a Slayer has to be alone. She tried to create a connection and a sisterhood and change the status quo.

I don't think Buffy could ever make it work with a "normal lover without superpowers" since she isn't normal. As a Slayer she had the spirit of a demon alongside her human spirit just like Angel & Spike. She had that need for violence and walked between the demon and the human world. She isn't even normal when it comes to Slayers. She is "the greatest Slayer that ever lived" "Queen of the Slayers" "fount of the Slayer power" "leader of the Slayer Organization".

I always believed that Angel and Buffy are soulmates no matter what was going on in the comics. It was obvious. Crazysoulless mentioned some very good points to support this theory.

We can never tell if this is the end of a ship cause simply it always lives in our hearts. Bangel has always lived in my heart. For all seven seasons. And spuffies, I am certain, believe the same for their ship. If they believe Spike is Buffy's other half, noone can stop this theory. Cause it lives inside someone's heart, I hope I make some sense. It's past midnight...:biggrin3:

Soulmates i hate that word. But of course it´s your opinion and i will respect that. The thing is i like the AtF Angel and seeing him as Twilight makes me sick.
I have more issue with Spike's actions post-Chosen. Buffy had gotten to the place where she could say "I love you", tell Angel that Spike is in her heart and she is going to be in a romantic relationship with him even if it doesn't end with a white picket fence, and was openly showing her affection towards Spike (sleeping with him in the basement) and wanted him to be her boyfriend. And yet Spike ends up having meaningless sex with Harmony, dating Spider, having Stepford fantasies about Fred, spying on a bathing Illyria, etc. If Buffy does know that Spike is alive it is obvious that she is hurt that he didn't tell her and thinks that he abandoned her to be the "Los Angeles Champion" in much the same way as her previous souled vampire lover did. It makes sense that Buffy would try to start something with Xander since she feared Angel and Spike didn't want her anymore. Of course she would fall into Angel's arms (with the help of the glow) after he admits that he is still passionately in love with her and always will be.

I´m not sure it´s really the Angel we all know. So i don´t trust his words anymore especially not as Twilight.
Is this the end of Spuffy? Well, Buffy4ever has a point; technically, Spuffy did die in the Hellmouth in 'Chosen'.
Yet, our passion for what this couple had hasn't and won't end. The Spuffy fandom will live on, regardless of who Buffy ends up with "in the end."

I agree about Buffy ending up alone. You're right, crazysoullness, that is something Buffy has fought, but will she succeed? That is the question. Traditional mythology, something IMO Buffy is heavily based upon, the hero character always goes out alone in the end.

And I also disagree about Buffy deserving a human. Buffy deserves love, for sure, but I think it's the opposite. I think she deserves someone more than human; a hero and a figher, an extrodinary being who can match her in strength. Only that way can they be equals.

I guess you´re right about the equal partner part but i still have hopes for some Bander action. :)
Nope.

If Joss where to end either of the relationships, he could potentially loose fans, so he'd never do it. I'm sure as soon as Spike comes along there will be something for Spike/Buffy fans which will make Spike an equal runner for soul mate.

If we compare it to 'Chosen', for fans of Spike and Buffy that would be a pretty big deal (the possibility of them sleeping together and the I love you), but fans of Angel and Buffy got a shout out with Angel turning up, to have Buffy imply there could be a future with him.

With Buffy and Angel as defined soul mates(this is Buffy and Angels pretty big deal) so I'm sure there will be a shout out to Spike and Buffy fans

"I´m not sure it´s really the Angel we all know. So i don´t trust his words anymore especially not as Twilight."

The writers spent most of S5 of AtS showing that Angel was still in love with Buffy (Just Rewards, Destiny, Sole Purpose, Damage, TGIQ) and had him admit that he was waiting for her to "be cookies" (be emotionally ready for another romantic relationship with him) and that they had a "forever love". While Angel's actions as Twilight are very suspect, his love for Buffy never was. I think the only reason she believed that he didn't want to be with her anymore (Always Darkest) was that she might have found out about some of his actions in LA (possibly finding out that he tried to date Cordy in S3/4?) since she knew he wanted to get back together in Chosen.

Regarding Spike, I am surprised that he so easily started a recurring sexual relationship with someone else. Buffy didn't have sex with another man for over two years after Chosen and when she did it was with Angel.

I've never been a huge fan of Bangel.

not a great supporter of buffy/spike eitehr but i like it more and make's more sense to me in that at least spike wanted buffy from at LEAST S4/S5.

where as angel was just set to watch buffy and 'help' her.

and there's the whole he got his soul through a gypsy curse where spike fought and bled to earn it essentially FOR buffy. so he could be the man she deserved.

so yea buffy/angel being soul mates.. no i dont buy it.

Yeah a borrowed soul does not make for a good soulmate and how can you be soulmates with someone who has a side of himself that hates you? Not to mention the creepy part about him stalking and wanking off to her from when she's 15
We also have to take into account which "soulmate" mythology the writers refer to. Is it the idea of "twin souls"? Or people belonging to the same "soul group" that reincarnates in the same circles every lifetime?

Who knows if there will ever be any more Spike/Buffy in this so-called 'canon' of the comics, but in my view - as long as there's fandom, people writing and reading fic, creating art, holding meta discussions and taking an interest in the ship, then it isn't dead yet.

And it is such intelligent metas, beautiful arts, well-written fan fictions, and sexy fun vids. We have kick-ass Spuffy shippers!
Yeah there's still life in the old ship yet 🙂
I think Spike still has an important role to play in the comic and I don't think that we'll ever get a definative answer of one or the other, and that, I think, is as it should be.

I hope Buffy smacks the heck out of Spike for denying her loads of Spuffy sex the past two years and instead slumming with the idiot bloodsucker (Harmony) that let the world find out vamps are real and the mutant with arachnid-tenacles (Spider). Seriously, Buffy is the love of his life and the best he's ever had.

The most simple answer to the question is, no, Spuffy will not end as long as one person still remembers and believes in it. In other words, as long as I live, Spuffy lives and flourishes. Joss has been saying for years that Buffy and Angel are soul mates, are meant for each other, truly love each other, and probably a dozen other variations on the same theme, so, technically, that matter has been settled. (Of course, the first time that he said it was on April 1, 2000, so...)

I could no more accept the idea of there being no Spuffy as I could accept that there is no Santa Claus (watch "A Miracle On 34th Street" sometime, skeptics) because Spuffy, like Santa, exists than much in the hearts and souls of its believers as Bangel, Cangel, Bander, Fuffy, or (my personal favorite) Xangel exists for their supporters. Spuffy is, Spuffy was, Spuffy always will be, if for no other reason than to pester the hell out of all those smug Bangels out there in the world. But even above and beyond all of that, Spuffy exists for one simple, undeniable reason.

Buffy loves Spike the most.

Thus endeth the lesson.

It was a good lesson. I think for Spike to believe we will need Giles-type flashcards and maybe a whiteboard.

Well, the Buffy/Xander fans had hopes for Buffy/Xander all seven seasons when everybody else told them that it was impossible. S8 proves that it can be possible as Buffy develped feelings for Xander. 🙂

So, I don't think Spike/Buffy fans should lose hope. Be strong, like the Buffy/Xander fans.

Even though I love Buffy/Angel & Buffy/Spike so much, I am a huge Buffy/Xander fan!

You guys are living in a fool's paradise. Anyone with eyes to see could tell that it was Xander who stole Angel's heart the first time that their eyes met. The fire! The passion! The sheer animal lust! Angel only paid attention to Buffy so that he could be near Xander, and Xander's so called hatred of Angel was just plain old jealousy and anger at Buffy stealing his man. I'm telling you all, if it had been Xander who crossed over to "Angel" for Season 5, the truth would have been revealed at last. Angel and Xander, the only REAL match made in Sunny-hell.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

You know, I don't mind this version. I'm actually a huge Xander/Angel fan. Though I'm more into Xander/Spike as I enjoy their interactions more. 🙂
