The fall of Facebook

Mark did an interview with 60 minutes on December 2nd that focused on the new layout and the future of Facebook. Mark also addresses the movie 'The Social Network' as well as questions about privacy issues in the interview. He semi-addresses most of the questions and concerns that some of you brought up in this thread.

I thought the interview was fairly interesting.

I just watched that 60 minutes... it was interesting but I kind of wanted to punch her with her whole "taking over google" and "taking over the internet" questions.
 
I don't care. There are like maybe 2 friends I have on there that I haven't met IRL. It's all facebook. I can keep in touch with people and play games. All I really care about.
 
I agree with those who say it is becoming a little troubling the depth of information the site wants to log about you. The possibilities for misuse in many varied ways are frightening.
 
I really hate the " People You May Know" thing or the Suggested Friends. I don't care about them! Its such a useless feature.
 
I closed my facebook a while back and then started getting emails saying that an unknown American computer was trying to access my account and by the 3rd email, it had accessed my account. Of course I logged back in and now I'm on facebook again. No sign that anyone had been using my account, probably just facebook drawing me back in. I like the basic idea of facebook but it will easily go too far and way too much information will be giving out about a person. It's narcissism taking to extremes in many cases - "Hey look at me and my life, I have a thousand friends". Nope you got some friends and a lot of acquaintances. It's a scary thing in a lot of ways but as long as it's taken as fun and isn't harmful to the person, I guess it's ok. I do fear harm will be done in time though, facebook bullying etc. I declined a friend invite from some one who wouldn't even say hello to me and now they think I'm the height of arrogance. Why would I add someone who blanks me when I say hello? Sucks for them that their friend number didn't go up, I guess. As I said, Facebook is a little scary.
 
My personal life is displayed in person to my friends. They know what's happening with me. I don't need to post everything on facebook. This is a way I can talk to my brothers in cali and see how they're doing, how their appearances have changed, all that jazz. It's cool to see some old friends and all, but no one I don't trust will be added, and people I don't know, I put into a group with special privacy settings.

I've had a stalker in real life. Had him stand outside my house and stare in my windows at night. Someone I almost feared for my life from. I don't need that ever again.

why would you add people you don't know? different privacy settings or not, if i don't know them, they won't be my friend
I love Facebook and personally, I think it's at its peak in popularity. Sure the new changes take some getting used to but I don't think they're overdoing it like MySpace did.

I don't ever have to worry about stalkers or privacy because I only add people I know and I don't post anything that I don't want others to see. I actually enjoy the new features and all of the information I've posted on my profile is pretty common knowledge so it's not like Facebook is asking me to reveal anything that my friends list doesn't already know.

also, before, when you commented on something, you could see on the page "...commented on ....'s status". Now you see "Haha lol on ...'s status".

i think that only appears when the other person's wall is visible to non-friends, so it's not really more intrusive than before because they set it up that way themselves. as for all the other stuff... idk, apart from the languages, there's no more information than you had before i don't think. it's just more obvious now - you don't have to go into 'information'. the only thing that annoys me a little is when you post something on someones profile and then go onto your own it shows the beginning of your post in your Recent Activities. that's a bit uncool. i've always deleted my activities from my wall anyway but now i think i have to be a bit quicker with it lol
 
I don't care about how invasive facebook is getting now. There is nothing private or secretive at all. I have a sick sense of humor so that comes out in most of my statuses. I've said some truely horrible things in my statuses, and I feel like everyone is prepared for it - they know what they signed up for when I requested them/they requested me. So when I post things like "If I had to be a prostitute, I would be a cheap prostitute. Because $40 would keep me busy, gotta stay on that money grind." as my status I could care less if it shows up in other places.

There's nothing too intelligent on my comments either. Like the half hour arguement between me and a friend about being addicted to peanut M&Ms.

The new layout changes are kind of like the changes here on BB. At first I'm like, "...kkk? Why?" *blinks* But then after like 5 minutes I realize it's not that big a deal and just roll with it.

That came out wrong... Not people I don't know. People I haven't personally met, but may know from somewhere online, like here for example. And the number of those is like one or two people.

I agree with Nix. I do have a facebook and I sometimes commincate with some family or friends that live in different states there and maybe just friends and family that I see alot, but facebook is a waste of time other than that in my opinion. It can get annoying when you get a bunch of farmville and other game requests that fill up your inbox, and it's not like Twitter where you can just stop following farmville, etc.. So I'm also one of the people that can survive without facebook.

You can block requests from farmville. or from the user who sent them.
To me facebook is what you make of it. At some point something else will come along and it'll die but I don't see it happening for some time. It's not perfect but if people don't like it, just don't use it.

Unfortunately, I'm kinda "facebook addict". I always gotta check out what's going on on FB, and it has become a habit. I'm even on fb in school since I can be online through my cell phone -_-
 
I agree that you are more exposed now when the new profile is activated... and that's bad, pretty sure that I'll gonna regret ever using facebook , but it's so addictive.....
Goldilocks, I have the same problem... can't pass by a computer in school and not log on to fb hehe... ^.^
 
I rarely go on facebook at all unless someone posts on my wall or sends me a message or someone is requesting to add me.lol. So I'm not so addicted. I never update my status or anything. I have family members on my friends list. Soo...😛
 
I don't really mind facebook it can be useful. Not that I use it much myself.

What I don't like is all these other sites that have 'like' buttons and login abilities through your facebook account.
Find it a bit scary that facebook can keep track on what sites I visit all over the internet with these 'like' buttons.
But I mostly blame the other sites for adding them than I blame facebook though.

Every time the layout changes people get upset. I don't really like facebook in the first place so it doesn't really bother me. I do have one, but I use it to keep in touch with people I can't see often and most of my friends find it easier to discuss our plans for the weekends. We do this in messages so that everyone on facebook can't see what we are doing. I've always though facebook asks for too much info. It's up to the user to give this info or not.

With camera's coming up on every street light and store, I don't think anyone will have any privacy soon.
