In the Fray series Melaka's demon watcher, Urkon speaks of the final battle of the last called slayer, in which the last slayer possibly aided by a group of mystical allies fights a demon horde to end the existence of demons and magic in this reality. In the last issue of Time of your life Fray refers to Buffy as "the last girl".

Let's assume Fray and Urkon are both correct. There is a final battle, and Buffy is the last slayer. Who are the mystic allies? If Buffy is the last slayer doesn't that assume all the others are gone (including Faith)?

On the other hand, we know the final battle as detailed by Fray and Urkon doesn't seem possible, because in that final battle the last slayer disappears into a dimensional portal never to be seen again. We know a season 9 is planned. So unless season 9 takes place in another dimension, which would exclude all the supporting characters - and who really sees that happening - Fray, Urkon, or both are wrong about some of the significant details.

Um, I know the comics only by virtue of your Canon Watch thread (for which I can't thank you enough, btw, it's excellent!)... but is there any reason to believe that final battle must happen in S8 and not in S9?

I hadn't thought of that. Good one.
I read elsewhere here that Season 9 will only be 20 issues as opposed to another 40. I had always just assumed that the final battle is what both Seasons 8 and 9 are leading up to and that it will take place, slightly altered from the Fray depiction, around the end of Season 9.

It's only been a little over 150 years ago, and people are still arguing over exactly what happened at the Alamo, even though there were literally thousands of survivors, and the same goes for countless other accounts throughout history of battles and disasters. There's no reason why the events as depicted by Urkon couldn't be exaggerated, inaccurate, or just plain lies used to explain whatever events caused the "banishment" of all of the supernatural forces on earth. Or, there could have been a battle accomplishing that, and the survivors, namely the Slayer and her allies, simply retired from the demon hunting game. After all, they had slain themselves out of a job, and probably in doing so eliminated all of their own mystic powers. Maybe the former Slayers, witches, and other assorted warriors, now normal humans, became teachers, bankers, carpenters, or whatever, and simply faded into obscurity. The Watchers' Chronicles that fray has access to might be incomplete for any of a hundred or more reasons, and Buffy's records might just be the last surviving ones.

In fact without giving any spoilers away, I thing the preview to the next issue kind of suggests that "fuzzy on the details" possibility.
Yeah I could see there being a problem with finding a nice unbiased eye witness in the middle of a massive apocalypse-y style situation who could idly sit there and take pictures or scribble it down in a notebook, much less keep that information perfectly intact for 200 years as well.

Speaking of copying down the details, here's another one. Does the death of "the last, great watcher" at the battle of Starbucks precede the final battle, or is the battle of Starbucks the final battle.

Actually that's most likely not relevant, because the account of the final battle comes from Urkon, and therefore the demon side.

Well, whichever battle came first, if the Watchers were the ones keeping the records, who was left to record the death of the last one?

I thought Fray mentioned reading about it in the Chronicles, too. I guess I'm gonna have to read the whole thing over again.

Umm, they're having the final showdown battle royale between Humans and Demons in a coffee house?

I'm going to go with "near" instead of "in".

It's a little known fact that coffe affects some demons like kryptonite affects Superman
I always knew Starbucks would be involved with the end of the world in some way...

Its either the demon thing, or the combined computers of all those coffee houses will form Skynet or something. You'll see 😛

This is just a thought, but couldn't the other slayers be classified as "mystical allies"? Is the exact number of "mystical allies" ever mentioned?

A "group of mystical allies" could mean the Scoobies, akin to the thing they did in "Primeval". I'm not sure how Buffy could face down an army of demons unless she was on some serious mojo. Sure, she's physically strong and resilient, but still just human. She can only do so much. But I know my Buffy and she'd still do it, just the same, even with insane odds. She's all about that priority thing, about doing what's right, all about the mission.

I'm hoping to get some time tomorrow after lunch to sit back down and continue reading the Fray series so I can catch up with this discussion and add my proper 3 cents. The whole final battle thing is intriguing me. I would hate to see Buffy die, but she can't live forever. What I'd hate to see more than her dying, though, is just being blasted through some portal and being lost forever. So much for death is your gift.

Don't forget what kind of army Buffy went into the hellmouth with. Nothing more than a couple of dozen Potentials who she THOUGHT could be made into Slayers, but was by no means certain. A witch, who other than casting a single spell, powerful as it was, pretty much sat out the battle. A few humans, and a single vampire wearing an amulet which was of totally unknown power as well as being attained from a questionable source (W&H, not Angel). A single mystical weapon that, despite being a good vampire killer, had really at that been used as nothing more than a very efficient hand weapon. She didn't even make use of all of the resources that would have been available around Sunnydale that could have been used as weapons. Most of her warriors were armed with weapons more suitable as museum pieces or even just sharp pointed sticks. That was her entire force, and they were going into battle against an army consisting of literally thousands of super powerful beings. In anything but a tv fantasy series or a highly imaginative movie, that would go beyond hopeless all the way to suicidal.

Our favorite Slayer has a way of turning certain defeat into resounding victory whenever the situation arises. Leonidas and Travis could have used her in their respective battles. She puts the "super" in superhero. Expelling all of the supernatural force from the planet, if only for a couple of centuries? She could do that and still have time to spend a wild night at the Bronze with the Scoobies and her current snugglepuppy, whoever that might happen to be.
