The Gift as the Series Finale?

What would've been left unanswered?

And all of that could've been done on ANGEL. And it would've spared us all from the whole Connor, posessed Cordelia, Jasmine fiasco.

I hated the Connor/possessed Cordelia crap, but at the same time I did enjoy that season. As for what would have been left unanswered...I would have wanted to know what they were going to do now that the slayer is gone. Leave Sunnydale and pretend none of it happened, or keep fighting even though she's gone? I guess I only say this because I know what happened in season 6, so my "questions" are based on what actually happened...if that makes sense. Seasons 6 and 7 are my least favorite but whatever, there are so good episodes within them and I'm glad Buffy ended when it did.

Yeah I feel like if it had ended at Season 5, we would have all thought that was too soon. At 7 it felt like it was time for it to be over.

🙂

There would have been many things I liked about this. However, there would have been just as I would have disliked. The show would have ended on a strong note (not saying it didnt). Buffy dies, the fans would have craved more. It would have ended in a way where maybe an outsider to the show even knows the outcome of the series.. very strong. Plus, very heroic death, and so on. However, to me Glory was a huge bad guy and everything and the fact that it took Buffy's death to overturn the final showdown made sense- yet, it only seemed like that after Glory was gone, another Big Bad would have taken her place and sunnydale would have continued to be tormented, as well as the scoobies, and everyone else.

The show would not have recieved the open-ended closure that Season 7 gave it.

So while it would have been a nice solid-leaveyouwantingmore-ending, filled with heroism and tragedy.. it would have left the ending as if the bad guys still won in the bigger picture. Fans left to fill the story would have only allowed new slayers to fill their heads.. Joss was the only person who could bring Buffy back and he did!! So im very thankful for two additional seasons 🙂

Yes. Seasons 6 and 7 had some good episodes, but on the whole I thought the series was on the downside. Season 5 should have ended it. Then characters could have crossed over to Angel or formed their own spinoff (I think a Spike and Faith spinoff would have been brilliant).

I don't think I would Buffy as I do if the series would have ended with The Gift. Seasons 6 and 7 was the ones that made me fall in love 🙂

Oh, yeah, I'd be disappointed. I liked Season 6, and to a certain extent, Season 7 (The Body notwithstanding), better than Season 5, so I'm glad they kept going. I thought Chosen was better than The Gift, too, both in terms of the show's metaphorical completeness and as an individual episode. Don't get me wrong, I got teary at the ending, I absolutely loved the bit when Willow cured Tara and I appreciated how Buffy's death was used to signify a "rebirth" into adulthood in S6, but it felt a bit too much like Buffy by-the-numbers, like most of the fifth season. A cryptic prophecy misinterpreted leads to a great sacrifice made in order to save the world from the toughest enemy Buffy has faced yet. The Gift is Becoming pt. 3, right down to the memorable music that accompanies Buffy's death, recalling the use of the B/A love theme in Becoming's climax. The problem is that Becoming was something legitimately exceptional and new for Buffy when it aired, and so had a raw violence and shock value that effectively underlined S2's themes of love, intimacy and the loss of innocence, whereas The Gift feels a little overwrought. Then there are other issues with The Gift, like the anti-climactic battle with Glory (she just kind of...whacks her over and over again with the troll hammer) and a strangely rushed feel, which I think is because way too much stuff happens in the space of the one episode to meditate meaningfully on any of it. Pile that on to the other flaws of the season – the somewhat contrived world-building (coughknightsofbyzantiumcough), the focus on Dawn, who is virtually a caricature of a young, angst-filled teenager, making her very difficult to relate to even though Buffy's sisterly love for her was genuinely heart-warming – and you've still got an excellent Buffy episode, but not an outstanding Buffy episode. Honestly, I think The Gift is my least favourite season finale, aside from perhaps Prophecy Girl, and I've never understood why it overshadows what I feel are much stronger finales like Grave, Restless and Graduation Day.

Still, although S7 rounds off Buffy once and for all, I think it's S6 that really completes BtVS. It subverted everything we'd seen so far and really showed the audience Buffy's moral sense and strength in the face of depression. She was at the lowest point she'd ever been, and she hated herself for it – more than that, she pulled herself out of it. Meanwhile, Warren was much more interesting than any villain since the Mayor if only because he wasn't something intrinsically evil. No, Warren was just a horrible guy. A human being. With a gun. The Dark Willow arc also emotionally engaged me a lot more fiercely and consistently than most of S5's main plot arc, excepting Buffy's death. Plumbing the depths of S6 was the necessary step that made S7's plot arc effective – otherwise, it would have been another season of Buffy fighting an enemy even stronger than the one she fought last season.

I think it's hard in hindsight to imagine The Gift as the final Buffy episode as we all know in reality two more seasons followed. I think Season 5's finale was much stronger than Season 7's and it would have been a very emotional and poignant way to end the series. In Season 1 she was revived from death to save the World, and to then jump TO her death in the series finale to save the World again would have been ironic but also symbolic in terms of Buffy's development. So either way I would have been happy, I just feel The Gift was a lot more cathartic for the audience.

I would have hated Season 5 to be the end... I would have made the assumption that not only did Buffy die but her friends would have been soon to follow as they would have continued to fight evil and wouldn't have lasted long without a slayer to protect them... as we see in bargaining... which would have been devastating to me. Although it certainly would have been a powerful ending!

Though I loved The Gift and how it made the story feel complete, I enjoyed Season 6 too much. I felt like Season 6 brought Buffy to such a dark place that I really enjoyed watching. Plus, we wouldn't have gotten OMWF! That soundtrack always brightens me up when I am in a bad mood 🙂

I am also a huge Spuffy fun and really liked watching the relationship develop in such a twisted way.

The Gift would have been a perfect series finale. The character development that season was pretty solid. Buffy sacrificed herself to save the world, the Xander/Anya Willow/Tara relationships, the Buffy/Dawn Spike/Dawn interactions (which were dropped like a ton of bricks in seasons 6 & 7). Plus, Spike's development was really good and he wasn't yet ruined by seasons 6 and 7.

On the other hand, I'm relieved it lasted two more seasons. I have a feeling that if the show ended with season 5 Joss would have shipped over half the cast to Angel. I wouldn't have liked that. At all.

The results suggest that there are two tastes in Buffy episodes. Most fans, called "Loyalists" think that the show retained its high quality throughout all seven seasons.

A minority, called "Jumpers," believe that the show "jumped the shark" during the fourth season, coinciding with, but not to blame on Tara's appearance and Willow's change in sexual orientation.

I'm a Jumper, but do like standalone S6 & S7 eps like Normal Again. As it turns out, Joss Whedon is also a Jumper.

''For those who are curious, the addition of the list of Joss Whedon's favorite episodes not written by him clearly moves him from a clear Loyalist to being more of a Jumper than a Loyalist.''

As I'm a Jumper I wish the show ended with The Gift and the story to continue on in another medium. As in my opinion, for the most part, Season 5,6, & 7 were woeful! True they all have great episodes, but as a series the show clearly lost the run of itself when Season 5 began. This is perfectly reflected in the audience numbers of Season 5,6 & 7.

There's a great graph on the following page that pretty well describes the point of view of us jumpers:

"The Gift" would have been a good series finale, but personally I prefer "Chosen." The show didn't feel complete to me at the end of Season 5. It just felt like there were more stories to tell.

Im glad it ended the way it did as 'Chosen' (the gift was a good episode) but i liked how mature Buffy got in the way of being a leader in s7 and seeing willow turn bad in s6 and of course i enjoyed watching Buffys relationship grow with Spike. I wouldnt have been a happy bunny to see Buffy kill herself in order to save Dawn who just turned up in that season, it would have felt rushed to me that way. And hey i wouldnt turn down 2 more seasons of the Buff 🙂

I like 'The Gift' episode, but as final, I don't know :s . Chosen wasn't that good, but when Buffy smiles at the very end, I was so happy for her. 🙂 🙂

The Gift as a series finale.. It would be remembered, but I know that I personally wouldn't re-watch the series or episodes as often as I do. I wouldn't see the point if I knew she wasn't going to make it. I was in the same boat with House, the tv show. I only saw House being miserable, and could see how that could only end in one way, death. I was upset because that is the show that made me enjoy tv shows. If he were to die I wouldn't be able to watch the episodes over. Though, to be safe I actually haven't watched the series finale.

Anyway back to the original topic of conversation. The Gift as a Series Finale would be wonderful, powerful, and amazing. Though, it would again keep me from re-watching the series.

I thought it was a great ending.

Buffy gave up her life for the people she loved, most of all Dawn. I thought the whole thing was beautiful, especially a vampire who's not supposed to have a soul balling his eyes out because he's just lost the best thing that ever happened to him.

They could have left it there and I would have been happy.
