Yay! More fun with my Watchers Guide Volume 3!

This is from the original script.

How would you feel if the episode went this way?


In the interest of keeping the true ending of this episode from leaking, there were several different scripts, all with slightly different endings, circulated. Herer is how the script for one alternate episode ends:

ANGLE: IN THE SKY
A rift opens and a huge dragon flies out, screaming
as it sails past the girls.

DAWN (cont'd): "Buffy--"
BUFFY: "I don't care! Dawn, I won't lose you--"
DAWN: "I have to! You have to let me go! Blood starts it, and until the blood stops flowing it'll never stop. You know you have to let me..."

ON BUFFY
As she takes in Dawn's words, knowing it's true
ON DAWN
As, slowly at first, she takes a few steps away from her sister, towards the end of the platform.
ON BUFFY
Who does nothing to stop her.
ON DAWN AGAIN
A few more steps, faster this time, gaining speed until she is running toward the edge of the platform.
ANGLE: ABOVE THE END as Dawn reaches it and SWANDIVES right out and down toward the ball of energy.
CLOSE ON: DAWN
As she starts down
CLOSE ON: BUFFY
As she watches, crying
ANGLE: THE BALL OF ENERGY
As Dawn's body sails down into and disappears in a white light, causing the energy to go even wilder.
CLOSE ON: The group, as they look in vain to see what has happened.
CLOSE ON: DAWN's FACE
As she floats in the center of the maelstrom, being hit with the equivalent of a million jolts of electricity--
BUFFY--unable to leave the platform...
DAWN--hereyes slowly closing...
THE ENERGY BALL--exploding and suddently contracting out of existence...
Dawn disappearing with it.
CLOSE ON BUFFY'S FACE
BLACK OUT
END OF EPISODE


Eh...I think it was more emotional, much better, when Buffy died to save Dawn.
 
It's so unlike Buffy to allow dawn to do this. I wonder how much the show would've changed if that's what happened. I doubt they would've tried to bring her back in the beginning of S6. S6 would've probably focused on Buffy quiting being a slayer because of dawn's death, etc. So i am glad that didn't happen. Plus Buffy's death gave the show a lot of publicty during that Summer/Fall of 2001 when it was moving to UPN. I doubt the ratings would've stayed strong if Buffy hadn't died.
 
I think there is a much better way to end it...


Dawn tries to run past Buffy but Buffy grabs her.

BUFFY: What are you doing?
DAWN: I have to jump. The energy.
BUFFY: It'll kill you.
DAWN: (softly) I know. (Buffy staring at her) Buffy, I know about the ritual. I have to stop it.
BUFFY: You're right.

The tower shakes underneath them, making them both stumble.

DAWN: Wha--what?

More lightning crackles, even larger than before. Buffy looks up. A huge dragon flies out of the portal and buzzes the tower, flying away as they watch.

Buffy smiles at Dawn.

DAWN: (tearfully) Buffy...what are you saying?

Buffy seems to be thinking.

Flash to Spike earlier in the episode.
SPIKE: Cause it's always got to be blood.

Flash to Buffy and Dawn in the hospital at the end of "Blood Ties." Buffy putting her hand to her wound, then pressing it against Dawn's bloody hand.
BUFFY VOICEOVER: It's Summers blood. It's just like mine.

Flash to Buffy earlier in this episode.
BUFFY: She's me. The monks made her out of me.

Flash to Buffy beside the fire in "Intervention."
FIRST SLAYER: Death is your gift.
BUFFY: Death...

Flash back to the present. Close shot on Buffy's face.
FIRST SLAYER VOICEOVER: ...is your gift.

Buffy frowns. Turns around slowly.

Shot of the platform extending into the air. In the distance, holes seem to be opening in the sky. The sky is growing lighter as the sun tries to rise.

Buffy shrugs, then takes hold of Dawns shoulders, bringing her towards the edge.

DAWN: Buffy ... no!
BUFFY: Dawnie, I have to.
DAWN: No!
BUFFY: Listen to me. Please, there's not a lot of time, listen.

The camera pulls out on the two of them. Buffy holds Dawn by the upper arms and continues talking to her, although we don't hear the words. Dawn begins to cry. Lightning continues to crackle behind them.

Cut back to close shot of Buffy. She strokes the side of Dawn's face, then kisses her on the cheek. In slo-motion, she thrusts Dawn off the side of the tower.

Dawn grabs the edge, crying, holding onto it.

Buffy watches, smiling.

Dawn looses her grip on one hand, flailing her arm.

Long shot from below of the portal writhing and spitting.

Shot of Buffy's face, laughing. She stomps on Dawn's hand as Dawn begins to fall into the portal and towards the ground.

Begin a lengthy voiceover of Buffy's final words to Dawn.

BUFFY VOICEOVER: Dawn, listen to me. Listen.

Shot of Dawn writhing in pain in the portal.
BUFFY VOICEOVER: Nobody loved you. Ever.

Shot of Buffy watching Dawn go down.
BUFFY VOICEOVER: But this is the work that I have to do.

Long shot of the portal as it shrinks to nothingness and disappears. The sun begins to rise.

Cut to below. Willow and Tara, holding each other up, walk forward. Behind them we can see Giles coming forward too, and Xander holding Anya in his arms. They all walk forward, staring at something we can't see. They all appear to be happy.

BUFFY VOICEOVER: Nobody ever wanted to spend time with you. Mom never loved you, and you were never real.

The camera pulls back and we see they're all looking at Dawn's lifeless body lying amid the debris. In the background we see Spike coming forward, and kicking Dawn's body. He falls to the ground and laughs hysterically.

Cut to closer shot of Willow and Tara as Tara begins to cry. Willow gives the thumbs up to Xander.

BUFFY VOICEOVER: Willow won't miss you, or Tara. OK, maybe Tara, but...hey, what are ya' gonna do?

Shot of Xander and Anya looking happily up at Buffy. Anya lowers her head to Xander's shoulder, smiling.
BUFFY VOICEOVER: Xander never would have loved you, and you even got on Anya's nerves...

Shot of Giles looking sad.
BUFFY VOICEOVER: Giles...well Giles was only interested in you because you were a freakin ball of energy.

Giles takes off his glasses and cleans them, shrugging. Cut to Spike with his hands over his face, llaughing even more.

BUFFY VOICEOVER: You have to die, now.

Cut to Buffy skipping down the stairs, greeting Xander with a high-five.
BUFFY VOICEOVER: Dawn...the hardest thing in this world, is to live with you, every single day.

Cut to Buffy giving her speech to Dawn a few minutes ago.
BUFFY: Be brave. Die, Dawn.

Cut back to the group, all turning and walking away.
BUFFY VOICEOVER: For me.

Cut to: graveyard, day. It's sunny and pretty with lots of trees and grass. Zoom in slowly on a headstone. A small bunch of flowers lies on the grass in front of it.

The headstone reads:

DAWN SUMMERS
WHINEY BRAT
REALLY ANNOYING
THANK GOD SHE'S DEAD
FINALLY


OMG I know it's REALLY mean...but I laughed when I saw it...I'm not much of a Dawn fan, but I do like Michelle, and her work...but...hehe...I laughed when I read this.
 
I would of been gutted if they killed of Dawn, I think she really grew up over S6 & S7. I am glad they killed Buffy because it certainly was more emotional and it set things up nicely for the best season of Buffy.
 
I don't think it was particularly funny, only mean. But I'm sure there are people who will find it funny...
I know Dawn was whiney, but I still liked her. Always did. I would have hated it if Dawn had died, we'd never get to see her growing up in s6-7...
 
I liked Dawn much better in S7 than S5. Buffy dying was better though, yes I agree. Season six was by far my favourite season because of her death...Willow's comment at the end of S6, it sort of summed up my feelings about Dawn, but then again, showed me how negatively I, and many people I know, was acting towards her...

DAWN: You're freaking me out.
WILLOW: Oh, don't be like that. I'm just a little wired. And I have some things to do. I thought if anybody'd understand-
DAWN: I miss Tara, too!

Willow stops cold, glares.

DAWN: But this? What you're doing here? This is not the way to go! You're only going to make things worse! But I promise, it's not too late to-
WILLOW: You miss her?
DAWN: (shocked) Yes.
WILLOW: Did you cry? (Dawn still looking shocked) Of course you did. I get that.

Willow resumes walking toward Dawn, and Dawn resumes backing away.

WILLOW: I understand the crying, you cry because you're human. But you weren't always.
DAWN: (hurt) Yes, I was.
WILLOW: No, please. You're telling me you don't remember? You used to be some ... mystic ball of energy. Maybe that's why you're crying all the time, Dawnie. 'Cause you don't belong here.

Dawn finds herself backed up against the wall, gasping anxiously.

WILLOW: Wanna go back? End the pain? You'll be happier. I'll be happier. We'll all be a lot happier without listening to the constant whining.
DAWN: (tearful and angry) Willow, stop...
WILLOW: (mock-whining) "Mom!" "Buffy!" "Tara!" "Waah!" It's time you go back to being a little energy ball.


When Willow made the whiney-voice and said that, I was just like...whoa. That's me. Then I start thinking about what if I was Dawn? I would be really upset too, and she's only a kid, though she constantly tells others she's not...Willow was harsh there, and I felt a bit bad for being such a hypocrit...

uhh...about the agreeing part on your post, JustAnnie...erm...ment that as a thanks for not ...you know...being mean. Alot of people think that just because someone puts something down they don't like, it gives them license to rant at them...you didn't. Thank you.

I felt really bad for Dawn in that scene aswell, and i think that with everything she's been through, that she kinda has the right to whine.

No problem. I try my best not to rant at people with different opinions, even if it's sometimes very tepting.
 
Ive seen that original script ending before. It wouldnt have worked. Buffy isnt the type of person to do that. There is no way she would have let Dawn die. Also, I read that Anya was also meant to die in The Gift. When the...stones fell on her head, when she pushed Xander out of the way, she was meant to die. I also think this wouldn't have worked. If they both died the light would have been took off another person (if you get me). Im pleased it worked out the way it did. And Im glad they didn't kill off Dawn and Anya.
 
I think it was much more emotional for Buffy to sacrifice herself.

I also think if it had been Dawn she wouldn't have gone out as gracefully and heroic as Buffy did.

I can just see it now....she jumps into the energy field screaming "It's not fair!!!" or "Get out, get out, get out!!!" at all the demons entering this demension.

That part in S6 "Two to Go" may just may be my favourite Dawn scene in the whole series. It's when you really see how deep into evil Willow has sunk. She may have had an agenda with Warren, with Rack, even with Giles and Buffy, but she had no reason to threaten Dawn. Dawn is really an innocent here, trying in her naive way to help an older friend, someone she's looked up to.

I don't think Dawn sacrificing herself in Season 5 would have been as powerful as Buffy going in her place. One thing about Season 5-I don't think I had enough time to develop a real emotional tie to Dawn-it was only later that she seemed to really fit in (I know, some people never thought she fit in!)

Still, the way "The Gift" was actually written, it was impressive enough to me that Dawn was willing to jump into the portal herself. In the end big sis ruled! 😉

OMG you just made my day, That was brilliant, I love Dawn but that did not take away from how funny this is, Ohhh, I am actually crying with laughter, seriously! I that was one of the best laughs I've had all week!

This is hilarious. I was LMAO when I read it. I think that if Dawn would have jumped it wouldn't have been a big impact. I mean Dawn had just gotten there plus none of the fans liked her so that wasn't really finale worthy. Buffy dying was a lot more effective. When I first saw the ep I was like :frown2: and then I was like :gun: But eventually I got better and saw that it was a good ending.
 
I just want to reinforce that it was an ALTERNATE script ending, not an ORIGINAL, like I think some people thought. It was never a possibility - it was just to not let the real ending leak out. But yeah, this thread is a what if. Just wanted to say that.

I love Dawn as a character. Her whining and screaming was grating, yes, but so is my five-year-old brother's. And I certainly don't want him to die. I'm glad the ep finished as it did, but I still find the fake, "mean" one hilarious. Just because I can imagine Buffy saying it, as the dialogue is similar to Buffy's in the real ep, only replacing nice stuff with nasty stuff. Said in the same tone and everything, it sounds funny.
 
I wouldn't have changed anything about the episode. I'm glad that that wasn't the real ending. Buffy's sacrafice was beautiful and a powerful ending to the season.
