The Great Buffy Redemption Debate

Perhaps though she just saw death as the way out... the way to deal with her issues and pain. Not necessarily as redemption.

But she also went to LA for a reason before taking the job to kill Angel. She went to destroy Wes. That shows that she did not go to LA for redemption.

She destroyed Wes because he was part of the past that she wanted so badly to get rid of he was part of the problem she thought that was making her how she was. Plus what better way to get angel to kill you then to screw with people he cares for? She new exactly what Messing seriously with Wesley would get her...It would get her a good beating and thats something she wanted and sorta needed

The point I'm trying to make here also, is that Faith really doesn't deserve redemption over Angel. She didn't make the choice for herself (she was forced into it by Angel).

Angel made the choice himself to start helping and fighting the good fight. Granted, not right away, but he did make a choice.

the point, WE'RE trying to make is that, yes, she did make that desicion on her own, to find redemption, she just didn't make the right desicion. she thought her redemption should start by killing herself, to removing herself for the world so that she couldn't do anymore harm.
the reason she tortured Wes was because he reminded her of why she ended up the way she did, and she knew that if she tortured Wes, Angel was more likely to kill her to save him.
she never went to LA with that intention. as far as i'm aware, she didn't even know Angel was in LA when she headed there.

Gosh, I am late, am I not? Here I go; firstly, Faith is a dark slayer, she is supposed to be opposite of Buffy; she is alone, leaded a tough life but hello, that is what a slayer should be; Nikki Wood, first slayer, chinese slayer, Kendra... Buffy is an exception, even Spike put it: " a slayer with family and friends, it wasn't in the brochure". So, Faith's loneliness can not justify her turning to darker side. Besides, Faith was never left alone, Buffy, Giles and Willow were there for her, she double-crossed them and betrayed them. For what? To help the mayor? Why? Because it is all about power. She was glad that she was a slayer so that way, she could want, go for it and take it. (I know there is an expression for this but it doesn't come for the moment). She was on the good side, she had the power to secure it but she did betray it. She didn't feel remorse. "I-don't-care"-in her own words.

Angel, on the otherhand, does care and did care, he felt remorse, he put a fight against his nature (being a vampire), he could toss it aside but he didn't. He chose the long, painful and hard way. Faith chose the short, happy-go-lucky and easy way.

Ok I think it's my turn.

For starters you're right postmortem..and you're right because that's exactly what we've been saying! She made those choices herself. There was no other force guiding them. She was dark, and she was wrong.

Now fast forward to 2000 (Season 4), she got hers, she nearly was killed by the Buff. She wakes up and does some more damage, because obviously she's a little cranky. Then something happens - she switches with Buffy. All of a sudden she's still the big bad until something clicks. Now we can chop this up to her banging Reilly, or seeing Spike or whatever but it clicked in her...no one made it click.

No one helped her realize she had to change at that very moment...she just knew Buffy was the one person she couldn't look in the eye. She wanted to die - and why? Remorse. She wanted everything that she had gone through out of her head, out of her past. Did she have 100 years to get through this, hell no she had no time at all. So she thought - i'm a slayer, i'm gonna go up against a big nasty who might want me dead. Angel.

She broke down with Angel if we recall folks - Angel was there for her, and when he recognized what was happening (because it happened to him) he helped her out. Faith decided it was the right thing to go to prison. And she didn't mess around in there, self defense only. Then someone comes to her - someone she actually tormented and she decides she's gotta help the one person who helped her - she didn't have to go back to Sunnydale, she chose to help save the world, to save the lives of potential slayers, to stand beside the one person she was probably scared of the most, Buffy. And she did it.

- this is getting pretty big sorry -

Angel on the other hand was brooding, chilling with his Manilow, eating his rats, and the odd human that happened to die. He walked away from people in need, he pushed people away....until Whistler. Whistler showed him the slayer. poof..."I want to help her"... it was love ladies & gents.

Then he leaves the woman he loves and what...time to do it all over again, every once in a while killing a vamp and pushing people away ... until Doyle.

I'm reiterating all of this because Faith was bad - and she bailed on it to save people...and if she was only doing it for Angel why wouldn't she have been cruel to the people in the Vamp Bar?

Angel was working hard on his redemption, but working hard doesn't mean pulling out and pulling out - and working with a time frame I think Faith has paid more penance in her prison term than Angel had in his lifetime. I believe fully that Faith deserves redemption more so than Angel at this point.

- i won't even go into the shanshu prophecy -

Can death really be the start of redemption though? Technically speaking, her death would've been cemented...she would not become a vamp or spirit or anything...so her soul would've passed on. And probably not to a good afterlife, so really there was no redemption there. Faith was stupid if she seriously thought that death would be the band-aid for her. In fact, I would think that that it would have tormented her more.

that's not what we're saying. Faith didn'y decided to die because she thought she would become a vampire or some sort of ghost. she wanted to die because she thought that it would end everything. no one else would have to suffer at her hands, and she wouldn't have to live with the thought that she could hurt someone else. Faith knew that she was probably going to go to hell once she'd been killed, but she understood that and was going ahead with it anyway. because that was what she thought she deserved...to spend eternity in hell as penance for her crimes.
when the idea of prison was presented to her, Faith realized that there was a way to pay for what she did without dying, and maybe the possiblity of parol at some point. which would give her the opportunity to reflect on what she did, alone, without anyone of the Scoobies or Angel's team whispering in her ear and telling her that it was all ok, or telling her that she didn't deserve to live. she kept to herself when she was behind bars, only fighting when she had to defend herself, and even then she didn't use all of her Slayer powers.
Faith had been happy to stay serve her time, maybe getting out early for good behavior. but when Wesley came to her and told her about Angelus, that was when she knew she was needed and she broke out. she could have easily broke out hundreds of times before, but she didn't. she chose to serve her time until she was truly needed to save her friend and the world.
the fact that Wes decided that he could go to Faith for help shows that he knew she had changed also. Wesely Pre-'Sanctuary' would never have done that.

So if Faith made the decision to die because no one would have to suffer at her hands... isn't that coping out...taking the easy way out? That was her original plan here...to have Angel kill her. If the only way to stop people from suffering by her hands was to die... can you really bestow redemption on her? That statement shows a weakness on her part, that she couldn't or wouldn't control herself, she just needed to die.

With Angel, he didn't take the easy way out. He accepted his curse, lived with the reminders every day about what he'd done as a demon. That's the behavior that deserves redemption.

Yes, I won't argue she was weak to want to die, but so was Angel. Angel was weak for giving up as well. But with that comes understanding and penance...which Faith took to at her own volition. Angel had people to really help him through it... Cordy, Buffy, even Fred & Wesley & Giles to a point... I think living every day with it is pretty worth of redemption - which is exactly what Faith is doing as well as Angel. Angel's just getting a little help from the Powers That Be, whereas Faith is all on her own.

Not to be sarcastic here...

And who made that choice for Faith to be all on her own? Yeah, that would be her. She had the chance to work with others and get the help she needed and she spit in their faces. So, that argument doesn't really work. You can't complain about not having something if you turned it down.

I don't remember too many times where Angel wanted to die. In fact, I remember one time in season three, and that was after what, close to a hundred years of penence. Faith only last a couple of days after the coma before wanting to die. That's a huge difference.

Just because it wasn't technically stated that Angel wanted to die doesn't mean he didn't i mean honestly I believe to a point he did want to die, because of the things he'd done... also anyways when faith first came to sunnydale... everyone was weird toward her and Buffy didn't really like her... sure they became tolerant of eachother but Buffy was still kinda standoffish toward her as well as the others because they stood behind backing up Buffy... so she wasn't truely really welcomed..

I beg to differ...if memory serves me correctly, the entire scooby gang and others were in awe of Faith. They did welcome her. And as I said before, they were her friends until she became evil. And when they rallied to help her, she refused to take their help.

yeh thats right spikedbuffy,

even though faith was offered all this support and help she REFUSED she just let the mayor in and he was evil!. and what about angel, when he came back from hell, Buffy helped him yes, but everyone one else turned him away and especially Giles, Xander, i mean you wouldnt think one of the own scoobies would!

Well he did try to kill them - so you know...less forgiving.
Same with Faith, Willow was never oooh ahhh to jump at the chance to save Faith - she always expressed dislike for her.

No one really gave Faith a real fighting chance after the whole killing thing. There was way more support for Angel, and to be honest I'm not sure why. The only one who never appreciated Angel was Xander.

What we are trying to say is that Faith was scared - the line "I DON'T CARE" riddled with fear, otherwise she wouldn't have pinned the whole thing on Buffy.

Angel couldn't feel that when he was on his killing spree and when he got his soul back he was justified in feeling guilty, sure. But 100 years of doing nothing but sitting on your keister is not the best way of helping yourself or the world. And since when did Atonement include Brooding anyways? Please...Faith made a solid choice to come back to the town that basically kicked her out to do some greater good. I think you have to agree there's some nobility on a level that i think we should all agree to.

The fact of the matter is thinking about it now when fighting the greater good there were people backing their play. Angel alone - not a good combo because he's all about making things worse when he's alone (season 2 prior to Epiphany). Faith on her own, well, she's on her own in prison making good choices, staying out of harms way the best way she can...but really we can't say how she would take by herself because we've never seen her alone. I mean really - she was with the scoobies, then she was with the mayor. The only time we've seen her alone is in prison.

I still think that Faith holds more merit for atonement because she is actively seeking it out. Prison was an active way to seek it out - and I'd love to know what's on her radar now that she closed the hellmouth...maybe that will be the real ticker - did she go back to prison? who knows right?

As for Angel - he fought side by side with Spike & an Ancient God to stop the Apocalypse, surely a mighty feat. But when the chips are down and he's alone, there's not much he's doing right in the ways of atonement - brooding is not atoning. And Faith is constantly working to find her place in the righteousness of the world - back my play Lyri? Angels Baby101?

Not right away. She only started to dislike Faith after learning that she used Xander for her own sexual purposes.

No one really gave Faith a real fighting chance after the whole killing thing. There was way more support for Angel, and to be honest I'm not sure why. The only one who never appreciated Angel was Xander.

Angel was given more support because he worked side-by-side with the Scooby gang. He was always there to provide a helping hand and put himself on the line. He was a team player mostly. Faith was not. She had her own agenda, even when she wasn't evil - to do her own thing. She surrounded herself with people, but never let them in. She brought all that on herself.

What we are trying to say is that Faith was scared - the line "I DON'T CARE" riddled with fear, otherwise she wouldn't have pinned the whole thing on Buffy.

You can't let fear rule your life. Angel didn't. He didn't allow himself to live in the fear of how to redeem himself even though he'd done so much damage. Yeah, he might have 'brooded' but to me, that's reflection. That's the only way you can learn from your mistakes, reflecting on them.

Angel couldn't feel that when he was on his killing spree and when he got his soul back he was justified in feeling guilty, sure. But 100 years of doing nothing but sitting on your keister is not the best way of helping yourself or the world. And since when did Atonement include Brooding anyways? Angel returned to Sunnydale plenty times. And your statement about sitting on your 'kiester' not helping yourself or the world. Last I checked, Faith was rotting in jail before breaking out. Sitting in jail doing nothing is 'sitting on your kiester', isn't it? She wasn't helping anyone in jail. If she wouldn't have broken out, she would still be there, rotting.

Angel chose to be alone because he couldn't handle other people. He needed silent time. Everyone, no matter good or evil, needs some time to themselves. With Faith, she really couldn't be alone. As seen by her streak of loser boyfriends she discussed on the show and jumping from group to group, she can't handle being alone. She can't fully deal with herself and what she has gone through on her own. That shows weakness.

I still think that Faith holds more merit for atonement because she is actively seeking it out. Prison was an active way to seek it out - and I'd love to know what's on her radar now that she closed the hellmouth...maybe that will be the real ticker - did she go back to prison? who knows right?

What has shown you that Angel isn't actively seeking it out? Are we watching the same show? 🙂

I just have a problem with your opinion of Angel. He has spent decades dealing with his problem and keeping himself on the straight and narrow. Faith has spent a couple of months (i'm only counting her return to sunnydale - her rotting in jail does not count for me, that is considered defeat in my opinion, because she didn't go to jail to atone, she went because she really had no choice).

I think that to further this conversation, some of us need to remind of ourselves that Angel is not just sitting on his butt. Rewatch the entire series of Angel and get a better viewpoint of what he has done in the way of good.

(my point is, in case you're missing it, is that Angel is actively seeking out redemption. )

Seeing as we seem to be going back and forth on this I'll counter your points - although I'm thinking the debate was screwed up way before...

(and saying re-watch the season isn't entirely right - cuz it's a debate - we chose our sides and have to argue for better or worse the side we chose - speaking of which I could use your help Lyri)

Angel is a Vampire. He can't go to prison, he would die from sun exposure. Faith is a human being - she has to live within the world and the rules created for it...remember under the laws she's a murderer and that's where she needs to be to get help for it. So she could either keep running from what she did or man up and face it, which she's doing. And if brooding is reflection, then what the heck do you think prison is, if not that????

You can't live in fear?? Are you mad? Angel totally lives in fear of his alter ego than any other thing ever. That's why he shyed away from people for what...100 years??? Living in fear is what drove him to solitude.

Willow started disliking Faith before Xander told the group about his fun in The Zeppo - she started disliking faith in Bad Girls even BEFORE she killed anyone.

Angel was a contributor till he went all crazy - then none of the Scoobies really ever trusted him again - hell Giles had him come into his house with a crossbow at him. They were always nervous of them bumping uglies again.

I just think that Faith took every challenge in stride after the evil - hell she poisoned herself for the greater good! To stop Angelius, and at least tried to stop The Beast...she wanted to help, she really did.

This may be something that not everyone agrees with, but in my personal opinion, jail is not reflecting. Jail is shelter and food and something that hard working citizens have to pay for who don't belong there. Jail is a treat. Why do you think so many people are there? 🙂

(I know, has nothing to do with the redemption debate, it's just why I don't consider jail as part of Faith's atonement, because you just sit and rot there. Would you believe that I support the death penalty?)

well faith is in jail yes, but she had it easy, she has all this strength, she a slayer and having that advantage she knows she wont be raped or bashed or abused.. yes verbally maybe but not physically.. she gets out of that quickly.. and angel could be in jail.. thats a poor excuse why he wouldnt be.. cos of the sun ... pf.. i think going to hell and being ripped back into the world was a pretty big jail dont you? he was in hell. and he was TORTURED. was faith? NO.. prob torturing herself mentally out of self pity.. but please!

You can't live in fear?? Are you mad? Angel totally lives in fear of his alter ego than any other thing ever. That's why he shyed away from people for what...100 years??? Living in fear is what drove him to solitude.

exactly, faith had no fear, angel did have the feear of his alter ego that put him through alot.. but after all the worst thing you should fear is YOURSELF!

Angel was a contributor till he went all crazy - then none of the Scoobies really ever trusted him again - hell Giles had him come into his house with a crossbow at him. They were always nervous of them bumping uglies again.

Angel pulled himself out of something that was beyond the situation faith was in.. she had the help of the mayor who had the power to keep safe.. she was fine holding daddys hand.

I just think that Faith took every challenge in stride after the evil - hell she poisoned herself for the greater good! To stop Angelius, and at least tried to stop The Beast...she wanted to help, she really did.

i believed she wanted to help out of self pity and nothing more.

EXACTLY. again faith had it so easy.
