There are several sites on Youtube running posts like this:

saying that, basically, "Captain Marvel" is the MCU's first flop, and that the studios and critics have conspired to cover up the fact, going so far as to buy literally millions of dollars worth of tickets just to pad the opening weekend profit levels.I can see, from a business point of view, given the franchis' phenomenally successful run up to this point, that even the expenditure of millions of dollars for fake reviews and unused tickets might seem like a good business decision, though it is, of course, totally unethical.

From my own personal experience, I will say that when my wife and I saw the movie o Sunday afternoon of the first weekend, the theater was almost empty, though that is no real indication of what it might have been like the night before. My personal assessment of the movie was that it was entertaining, but in no way up to the standard of the typical Marvel movie, even the "little" ones like "Ant Man" and its sequel, "Ant Man And The Wasp." One of those Youtube reviews said that the movie was so poorly received in China, usually a very profitable market for these films, patrons were actually walking out and demanding their money back.

So, what do you think? Has Bree Larson's politics and lack of acting ability ruined the MCU's up until now track record, is the women power subtext alienated a large portion of the potential audience, or is it just tome to give the superheroes a rest for awhile and find a new genre to exploit?

It's all part of the great manbaby conspiracy.

Lack of acting ability? Must be watching someone else to me?
I do know that I have absolutely no interest in a female superhero film. So this news comes as no surprise to me.

I think that theory is absurd. Don't you think they would love to point to this movie as a flop and say "see, women lead superhero movies aren't interesting or worth making, back to business as usual"? Why set themselves up for the expectation to make more movies like this if it was a flop? Disney doesn't give two shits about politics or female lead roles they care about money....its funny people believe otherwise.

I don't think they could say that. The damage would have been done and they would be seen as fallible.

But... I could give you that point sportyspice, however, after all of the success of the first female led superhero movie in Wonder Woman, to have Captain Marvel come out to lackluster reviews and sales would hurt. They are touting the BIGGEST female led movie OF ALL TIME now. If the reviews and sales were poor, or below Wonder Woman, it would most certainly hurt their business and cost them money in the future.

I don't think it would hurt long term. They could just say see we tried and go right back to what they had been doing.
This smells like a hollow conspiracy theory to me. There are many who have been hating on Bree Larson for months and predicting over and over again that the film is going to tank because 'feminism'.
So if it doesn't tank what else are they gonna say? Are they gonna swallow their pride and go and see it? Nah, because they can't separate the actor from the film role or maybe admit that they judged something too soon. That perhaps their take on things didn't mach the actual reality. So its all fake, a corporate cover-up by the Big Mouse and co. Just like how Marvel buys those shills to unjustly hate on the DC films...

The consensus from the voices that I trust it that's the Captain Marvel film is solidly OK, not brilliant, not groundbreaking, but not the man-hating polemic the nerd-ragers were fearing/predicting (based soley on some things BL said) and not at all like some of the stuff that had infested the Marvel comics.

The whole idea of Captain Marvel being introduced as the most powerful character in the MCU was, apparently Feige's idea, and he has planned it in such a way that she is set up to be the new lead character in the franchise, replacing both Iron Man and Captain America, so, no, they most certainly would NOT want it to fail. I don't think that there is any way that they could somehow manipulate it into being a blockbuster to equal "Captain America: Civil War," or "Avengers: Infinity War," but they could certainly fake enough interest to make it appear to be as good as "Black Panther."

The consensus from the voices that I trust it that's the Captain Marvel film is solidly OK, not brilliant, not groundbreaking

Precisely. And that's the problem in a nutshell. The plan is for Captain Marvel to replace characters who weren't just OK. They were, and still are, the most popular members of the Avengers, and the leaders of the entire franchise. The future of the MCU can't be guaranteed by a simply OK character. They have to make her more, and if she isn't up to that challenge, the character is going to have to be either recast or replaced altogether.

I've seen the movie, and I agree, it's OK. But it isn't "Iron Man," and it isn't "Captain America: The First Avenger," and that's what it needs to be if it's going to be the character that this franchise is going to depend on their continue its winning streak.

I don't buy into that theory at all. Captain Marvel made a ton of money, not because people were padding the box office. Now maybe Brie Larson's comments actually attracted people to check out the movie and that's why it made a lot of money. But after seeing Captain Marvel, it's a good movie, not the best Marvel movie, but it's a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed the character. And there really isn't all that much feminism in it.
. They have to make her more, and if she isn't up to that challenge, the character is going to have to be either recast or replaced altogether.
I'm thinking we will see more of her in Avenger's Endgame that will get a lot of fans on board with the character. The new Endgame trailer just came out and there is a scene where Thor confronts her, and I love it!

Once the X-Men enter the MCU (which they will, it seems like Fox is rounding off their X-Men movies with the last "big" storyline" which is the Dark Phoenix saga), then it's only a matter of time before Rogue and Captain Marvel meet and Marvel ends up in a coma from which she never awakens and Rogue gets her powers.

There you go. There's a way to write off the character if she doesn't pan out.

Seriously, though, with the advent of the Fox Marvel characters into the MCU, all the concern about Captain Marvel's worth will most likely all be academic anyhow, since it'll be all about the Fantastic Four and the X Men. The Avengers will be put on the back burner for long enough that the fans won't even be thinking about them anymore.

I just can’t believe people are pushing conspiracy theories to explain why a female led superhero movie is doing well at the box office. Actually, no, that’s not true, I CAN believe it. After all, this is a world where we have QAnon 🙄. If you don’t like the movie, write a bad review like normal people. Bitch to your friends about how you wasted 12 dollars and then move on with your life. Creating YouTube videos about how it’s an evil , Hollywood feminist conspiracy and then sharing them , or worse, sharing those videos and trying to spread that type of poison is like a mental disorder.

It is funny though. 😂😂😂😂 the breakdowns on the internet and things like this are massively entertaining. I bet the next YouTube video will be about how Brie Larson is either secretly a lizard person, or running a child porn ring out of a pizzeria 🤣

All's fair in love and war. 😛 Plus, you're really inspiring me to create (and share!) one of those videos. 😈

But Captain Marvel isn't the single linchpin on which the future of the Marvel-verse turns. There are other new characters that have been introduced to replace existing Avengers and there isn't a dud among them imo.
KF and other Marvel execs might be banging the feminist drum, but that's just marketing strategy since they've taken so long to give us a female led film. It's hype which all films have in one way or another.
My reading of Captain Marvel is that she's about as powerful as Thor or Iron Man (which fits), not the most awesome-ist hero ever 'coming to show the guys how its done', which is what the nerd-ragers had been predicting/moaning about- without even seeing the movie- for ages.

YouTube was full of would-be movie reviews going on and on about how the trailer looked sh***y and harping at BL's own comments like its legitimate film criticism. Whatever.

I've seen the movie, and I agree, it's OK. But it isn't "Iron Man," and it isn't "Captain America: The First Avenger,"

Iron Man is an almost impossibly high bar for most other superhero movies, but The first Captain America movie was basically 'a solidly OK origin film' too, just like the first Thor movie was OK.
And yet those characters went on to have much stronger sequels (Winter Soldier/Civil War and Ragnarok), in fact both of them immediately improved in the Avengers crossover movie.

I would say it's not unlikely, because perception of success matters, but honestly, getting butts into seats is a general problem these days so I wouldn't consider largely empty theaters proof of anything.

Hi, that's me! 🙂
Well, not actually producing any kind of movie teview on Youtube, but I agreed with most of them that I saw. I find Brie Larson singularly dislikable, especially when she talks whines about things like how haaaard it is to be a woman in the movie industry, as if she isn't one of the most priviliged people on the planet. And how this movie wasn't made for that person who therefore shouldn't voice their opinion about it because clearly picking and chosing your audience is a great way to market movies.

Every time she opens her mouth I just feel like she is such a Heather (who desperately wants to be a Veronica) and I don't want to see her on screen because she annoys the stuffing out me. I'm sure she's a competent actress but hearing someone say that a movie is their "activism" makes me feel like it's more about producing a message than a good movie. I could be wrong, but she's the face of the movie, so what she says is marketing. If this is their marketing, then I'm not interested.

However, before I was aware of Brie Larson, as I was trying to figure out whether it'd be a movie worth seeing or not I'll have to say that

a) I was turned off by reports that Captain Marvel was supposed to be the most powerful hero yet. Felt very like the scythe in Buffy season 7 for me. Suddenly super powered source found, just as odds look inconquerable. Snore!

b) the trailers did the movie no favors, they did look bland and generic and Brie Larson doesn't seem to have any charisma in them (which may not be true for the movie, but again, this is how they're marketing it so obviously it'll weigh into my opinion of what the film must be like)

c) Who the heck is Captain Marvel and why should I care? I'd never heard of the character and it seems like she was a dud in the comics too with like 8 reboots. Thusly I relied on the trailers to make me interested in the character, this they failed to do.

I was also turned off by the fact that they seemed to be acting as if it was amazingly groundbreaking, I mean, Wonder Woman already happened but even before that you had super powered female led movies like Elektra and Catwoman, not great films granted, but it's not like Captain Marvel descended from the skies to finally give women some representation they'd NEVER had before.

Once it was released people still seem more enamoured with the cat than the actual hero of the movie. Now I was underwhelmed by the Captain America films and the first Thor films as well, so for a sporadic MCU watcher like me, I've learned my lesson about waiting to see what the reviews will say before engaging with a Marvel film. Both trailers and reviews, even positive ones, tanked my interest in Captain Marvel along with Brie Larson being Brie Larson. The buzz online suggest that this makes me a misogynist and a troll from what I've seen which just, honestly, further alienates me from the whole franchise.

I can consider a movie actress to be miscast, a trailer crappy, and a movie disinteresting without being a nerd-rager or having a mental disorder.

It says something when your main lead is out-acted by a cat.

People are incredible reactionary nowadays, huh?

Going back to the op - this is a running theme that goes on in a certain quarter of the internet. If anything shows overt marketing towards a certain group, a conspiracy it must be with nefarious political agendas.

The agenda is to make money. If we lived in a society that accepted racism as mainstream then we'd get Disney making hardcore racist movies cos you reflect the culture to make money. The agenda is to make money. Because businesses have to make money as that is their actual purpose.

Also, Brie Larson is as funny and charismatic as a garbage bag.

In this case I think the whole Rotten Tomatoes thing made it look worse for Disney
When the trailer was released everybody says that The Movie was not good because women can not play the role of Captain Marvel. But When it released ever body Shut up and now says the Film was so good! I support The Marvel series and I watched the movie I love it. Brie Larson playing a Bold character in the movie she will play the lead role played in End Game. Her costume is really cool my girlfriend likes her jackets very much thinking to surprise my girlfriend with one of the jackets Brie Larson wore in Movie. Any Guesses??

everybody says

Thought it worth mentioning that "everybody" is often online and not those around us, though the meat bodies might parrot what they read/heard online (when someone is especially obnoxious or crazy about something like this I often ask if they got that off the internet).

One of the pleasant experiences of my being in Texas is that there was almost no internet for me...and it was golden. I'm going to do "internet detoxes" from time to time. And there are some subjects I avoid as much as possible online (as opposed to people around me), from firearms (2A in the USA) to feminism, both for and against.

Interesting enough, I was with many kids in watching the Hunger Games when it came out...and I was surprised at how much I liked it (and thus read the books). There was this strange brouhaha online about Rue being black, but thing is, she is in the book...the actual race changed was Katniss herself who was made white instead of olive skin. I asked the teens about it and they said NO ONE cared about any of that, save online...it looked as if people were TRYING to make it happen, which is entirely possible...not just by trolls but by movie execs themselves as controversy actually helps ticket sales, and they've engaged in such underhanded manipulations like that for decades before the internet (even hiring people to picket certain movies knowing more would see it then).

I'm mildly curious on what's actually going on here...some special snowflake complaining of rival snowflakes, or a deliberate marketing strategy? So far I can't bring myself to care enough to actually watch the video, but maybe later.

I agree. I think its perfectly fine to dislike an actor for being pompous and self-important, most of them are, and BL's comments were really idiotic, arrogant and high-handed.
I also think its good to separate the actor from the role they play; I can't stand Sean Penn and yet he's in some decent movies. I will continue to enjoy many Kevin Spacey film roles despite those characters looking like creepy-Kev.

On the flip-side I understand that if people don't like a movie like the new Ghostbusters or The Last Jedi, then maybe they just didn't like the movie for valid reasons instead of it being some misogynist reaction.
I think its a problem when Hollywood tries to (or even seems to) heavily cater to an agenda.
1) It's almost certainly bullcrap because they're only interested in money and 2) its gonna turn as many people against the film as gain an audience, generally speaking.

If we lived in a society that accepted racism as mainstream then we'd get Disney making hardcore racist movies cos you reflect the culture to make money.

Well, Hollywood is marketing a lot towards China now so, yeah, race/pandering is a growing factor.
