Here's an article I found a while ago and have been meaning to share with you. It's by a supposed feminist and her interpretation of Firefly makes me sick and embarrasses me; this is what people think feminists are like!
I don't have time to write a full response to this, but I figured I'd go ahead and provide you with your reading...displeasure.

_allecto_: A Rapist's View of the World: Joss Whedon and Firefly

For the record, I'm not usually this snide about other people's opinions, but really- this is sickening!

Wow, I'll have to read this tomorrow and I'll definitely be back with comments!
I find it interesting that the author says that any "pro-prostitution" comments will be deleted. From the way that she reviews "Firefly," any comment that doesn't praise every word and worship it as gospel could be construed as pro-prostitution.

As for one of what seems to be one of her major peeves that can't possibly be connected with what is known in some circles as the "world's oldest profession," (it actually isn't. The real world's oldest profession, according to the "Bible" is gardener), Zoe refers to Mal as "Sir," because he is the captain of "Serenity," and that is the proper way to address him as such. Recognizing and showing respect for someone's authority is protocol, not subservience.

And when did Inara "service" any member of the crew, let alone all of them?

This woman quite obviously began her research with a certain frame of mind, and she was looking for a particular theme, and a particular element, not trying to see the show as a whole, and she found that single theme. Unfortunately, she went in looking for a single acorn and completely missed the oak tree.

And the frequent and unnecessary use of profanity is not articulation, it's just a case of using bad taste to present a point in a sensational manner.

Somewhere out there on the internet, there is undoubtedly an avid and rather fanatical member of PETA who has also written a review of "Buffy" and "Angel," blasting them for their excessive use of leather garments and pig's blood, and it probably makes just about as much sense as this thing does.

Oh my god. Some people just have too much time to sit around and find something to bitch about. People like this Allecto are the ones who have given feminism a bad name. Not all the joss whedons in the world could damage feminisms reputation as much as she can with one blog post. Sigh... haters.
It's like Twisted sister being brought to court for their lyrical content - if you want to find something dirty in a text you will whether its there on not by the use of your own imagination.

And if you're completely devoid of a sense of humor perhaps you should skip the more liberal minded tv-shows. In an equal world men won't defer to women just for being women. Mal as a captain can tell his crew to shut up. Just because Zoe is a woman he shouldn't have to speak to her as some kind of "holy woman godess" simply for being so.

That truly was a disgusting interpretation of Firefly. Or as Oz would have put it "a radical interpretation of the text."

Oh allecto. Shes notorious on the internet for being insane, shes even got an encylopaedia dramatica page dedicated to her crazy exploits. Shes got alot of weird views. I remember her making a long post about how lesbianism is a viable birth control method. And then a long one about how pornography makes you into a rapist who should be aborted. Shes pretty much insane.

When i read this, i thought 'What a freeak'.
LMfao... I do think she has too much time on her hands to sit and bitch about the slightest things.

"What the **** is this feminist man trying to say about women here? A black woman calling a white man ‘sir’. A white male captain who abuses and silences his female crew, with no consequences. The women are HAPPY to be abused. They enjoy it. What does this say about women, Joss? What does this say about you? Do you tell your wife to shut up? Do you threaten to duct tape her mouth? Lock her in the bedroom? Is this funny to you, Joss? Because it sure as **** ain’t funny to me."

Wow. What a tard. I bet she's never even been raped.

PS. It's funny to me too.

I would find it funny if it wasn't so sad.
That was just strange and sad.

I thought it was some kind of joke first.
Then she started to talk about Joss and his wife, which was truly disqusting and way out of line. Almost stopped reading there.

Wonder if any show could ever match her standards.
Whatever you do it can always be interpreted wrong if you really want to.

/SK

I'm sorry, but what the hell?
Starting off, why does she keep on mentioning the colour of their skin? Is she implying that Joss is now rascist?
Second, she called him sir because he was her captain and leader. In the military, women are expected to respect their leader, even if he is a man. Mal is a jerk, and he would have told her to shut up if she was Wash or Jayne or any other guy.
WHAT THE HELL? Don't bring Joss's wife into this!!!
I really feel like screaming some rude names at the person who wrote this. This is disgusting.

I think she just hates men honestly.

I'm sorry, but I have to laugh. I mean, seriously, how sad does someone have to be to spend their time watching through Firefly, simply to bash it? People are entitled to their own opinions, sure, but that's just ridiculous. Zoe calling Mal 'Sir' is a bad thing, now? He's her boss for goodness sake, I mean what next I'm not allowed to call male teachers Sir because it undermines me? Yeah, sure. I think the only reason she wrote this was because she ran out of other things/people to slag off; and thought 'Hey, let's slag of Joss Whedon today' Hmph, total blasphemy in my book. And I think all the comments about Irina and prostitution are blown way out of proportion. Basically, hmph. I could rant on and on about this article, but I'd rather go to bed. Basically; it seems pretty pointless, and ridiculous to me.

I was pretty bemused and eyeroll-y through the whole essay, but was shocked at this:

"Let me just say now that I have never personally known of a healthy relationship between a white man and a woman of colour."

And based upon this, she makes a pretty biased assumption about the relationship between Wash and Zoe. Uh... what.

Take a look at this post, also on her blog: http://allecto.wordpress.com/2009/02/10/joss-whedon-is-so-unbelievably-sick

I am confused because
1.) How is this for male gratification? It's more so for BUFFY's gratification than anyone else and, well, she's a female.
2.) Having sex with a woman doesn't imply that you HAVE to look any certain why (and you would think that as a feminist, the author would know this.)
3.) The characters are not kids but are, in fact, complete adults!

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

This thing could get me worked up if I really let it, but there's just no point to it. No matter what you say to that woman, she will always believe exactly what she wants to believe. She warped and twisted Firefly into exactly what she expected to see, just so she could discredit Joss Whedon the feminist. Mal is a wonderful character. He's grouchy and mean, but he loves his crew members, including the women. But I bet this whacko just views his attempts to protect Kaylee and Inara as more chauvinism. What a sad, deluded person.

And I cannot believe her comments! She says about Joss and his wife, "Joss uses and abuses her. Probably rapes her and thinks of women as whores etc, etc." How dare she? Ugh, I cannot stay on her page anymore. It will just infuriate me.

Did you read the comments?

"I feel awful for Joss Whedon's wife. From what I've read about him and the interviews I've watched, I'm fairly certain that he rapes his wife and abuses her in various other ways. I honestly can't think of anything worse than living with a man like Joss who thinks of women like the way he portrays in his tv shows. How awful. The comment about the money was meant to be about how I personally could see no benefit from being with a man like Joss OTHER than money. Joss uses and abuses her. Probably rapes her and thinks of women as whores etc, etc. Obviously, Ms Whedon has her own reasons for staying. Fear, patriarchal concepts of love, etc. But I would argue that she gives everything and gets nothing. Money is the only concrete thing that she could possibly gain. But as I said money is worth nothing compared with self-integrity, self-esteem, love (sister/lesbian/gynaffectionate love) etc. So she still loses out. Poor woman."

Wow...

To quote Willow, that bitca really needs every square inch of her ass kicked.

I'd agree with that statement.

I actually have to digest this a bit and will post a lengthy reply tomorrow. But no I'm too fired up.

The whole conception of third-wave feminism had to do with the idea that there are multiple discourses of women's empowerment. To suggest that women sex workers are all the victims of rape is to in fact strip these very women of the legitimacy of their own, chosen, sexual decision; to imply that sexual decisions made by women are a by-product of a male sexual predation.

I was raised by an ardently feminist single mother. I have heard, and understand/respect (although often disagree with) critiques of Joss's work concerning race/gender/violence/etc. Granted, all the women in Joss's shows are smoking hot (as are the men :wink🙂. But I think this has more to do with the TV industry than Joss's mores.

Again, I need to digest this more and come up with a more cogent response....but how many directors/writers/producers have based nearly every single show they've ever done around a strong, independent female lead (SMG, Summer Glau, Eliza, and yes, David Boreanaz and Neil-Patrick Harris lmao)?!

I really agree. While I personally am not a big fan of porn or prostitution, as a libertarian, I'm well aware that other women may enjoy such lifestyles. And that's entirely their prerogative--provided it's their choice and they're not being trafficked.

I think the feminists who believe that any sexual interaction between a male and a female is rape by definition are just insane. There's no reasoning with them. And it makes me wonder what in the world drove them to believe such a thing?
