THE MISSING CROSS
As there hadn't been any lessons at the Manor that day, boredom sat
around the room with the Maidens.
Fred was only mildly interested in watching the news that morning,
there was a feature on local events, mention was made about the
number of road accidents increasing.
Fred called Garet to watch, he became interested in the story that
spoke of a sudden increase in the number of road accidents along a
small stretch of road near Telegraph hill. Anne was sitting nearby
reading a magazine article when she noticed that Garet was sitting up
watching the television report.
"What's that about, Garet?"
"They're saying why accidents happen, where they happen. They are
mentioning about a place that isn't to far from here, one of the places
that I've read about."
"I'll go to the library, find out what we have about that section of
road," said Fred.
"Well, it is something to do so I'll come with you," said Anne, "I'll tell a
few of the others."
Garet rang Totnes police station and asked to speak to Dave Jackson,
saying it was for the Myth Investigators.
"Hello Garet, what can I do for you?" asked Dave.
"There was a thing on the TV about the number of road accidents on a
bit of road between the old Penn Inn round-about and the Plymouth to
Exeter road, not far from Telegraph Hill. Can you get me the details?" asked Garet.
"We've been doing a bit of investigating in conjunction with the Newton
Abbot police about those accidents ourselves, most of the fatalities
have happened just after it rained," said Dave.
"What's the rain got to do with it?"
"I'm not sure, bit it does make the road slippy, and that can lead to
accidents. There was a suggestion that the road surface is repaired in
that bit," said Dave.
"Can we look into it first, something tells me there's another reason."
"Ok Garet, I know the officer in charge over there, he has a deep
respect for the Myth team, so I'll tell him to leave it to you people for a while."
An hour later Garet was sat, thinking about his conversation with Dave,
he suddenly realised what it was that made him so interested in that
area. He ran through to the library, hoping to speak to Fred.
"Look for a ghost or ghosts near the road. I was speaking to Dave
earlier about that area and he mentioned about the accidents being
mainly when there was no rain, that the rain had just stopped. Can you
bring me as much as you can find."
"Do you want anything about ghostly activity?" asked Anne.
"Yes, I think there could be more than one ghost causing the
problems," said Garet.
For several hours, Garet, Fred and Wesley sorted through books, picking
out the passages that might be useful.
During the late nineties a multiple car crash had claimed the lives of six
people, four other cars had become involved, the first car had broken
down, the next had left the road and slammed into some trees, two
other cars stopped to help and the rest ploughed into them.
A survivor in one of the cars remembered the driver shouting that the
wheel wouldn't turn. Not long afterwards there had been many reports
of a spectral figure guiding car drivers on that stretch of road.
Some one said that there was no mist but they were still going slowly.
All was well, until one person said of a spectral figure gliding along the
road in front of them, but he kept looking back. His wife noticed another
figure seemingly searching their bags.
When he stopped his search the two if them disappeared. Garet took
what he'd found, he told every-one in the room. Whilst most of the
Maidens were in favour of helping him, they suggested that more info
was needed about the area."
"To start with Garet, if you, Scherry, Blue and Pitts go there and find
out what's going on, I'll organise it from this end," said Hope.
The evenings air was a bit on the nippy side as Pitts, Blue, Garet and
Scherry walked along the road, there was a bit of moisture in the air,
but no sign of rain.
"Can you see any ghosts here Blue?" asked Garet.
"Yeah, sure, there's a load of them in the forest, they've got the same
uniform as those that attacked my castle. There's two by themselves,
bit further ahead. They are dressed differently, they seem to have
modern clothes. I'll go and have a chat with them, back in a bit."
When Blue did come back, she seemed to be very thoughtful.
"What is it?" asked Garet.
"I think they've lost something," said Blue, "I couldn't get to them to
speak to me to much, when I was getting closer to them, I noticed
that they looked at the ground a lot.
I don't think it was my being there that caused a problem, it's like they
are looking for something."
"The problems of being a ghost," said Pitts.
"Blue, there's some-one to speak to you," said Garet, indicating
some-one else.
"Why did you come here, why talk to us?"
"To find out why you are here, and see if we can help you."
"In the crash, part of a cross that our mother gave us was lost. We've
searched every where near here, we've even looked in every car that
passes, but we can't leave the area."
"So, the person that you are with, he is your brother? you said you've
been trying to get others to help you?" asked Blue.
"Yes, but without any success."
"I was told that you look when it has just stopped raining, why's that?"
"I'm not sure, maybe it's because when we first started looking we
thought it would reflect better with some water on it."
"And you keep coming back here?, I think I know why. When you leave
a car you want to tell your brother, so, if you are the first to leave
you'll go where you can be found. If you are the last to leave, you'll
want to tell him," said Blue.
"Thanks, what do we do now?"
"You could come and see my place," suggested Blue.
"Could do I suppose, if we could leave this place we would."
"You can, until now all your thoughts have been about here. So if you
think about staying with me, then you will," said Blue.
Blue went and stood on the other side of the road, turning to them,
they looked at each other then they were with Blue.
"When we were alive we just did what we wanted, now we need to
think of what we want to do, okay, thanks."
"We've never been able to go this, we've never been anywhere since
we died, I'm glad you knew how to do this."
"I was the same as you, it was Pitts, I'm not sure if he could be called
my boyfriend, I mean we're both a few hundred years old," said Blue.
"He's a ghost as well, is he?"
"Oh no, he used to be a vampire, but now he's an eternal. Tell you
what, I'll take you to where I lived," said Blue, "is it alright if you see
what you can find about their mothers cross Garet, where the wrecked
cars were taken."
It wasn't long before Blue, Pitts, Scherry and the two other ghosts
were stood, looking at the castle.
"This is a nice place, you really used to live here?"
"This is the place," said Blue.
"I've visited this place, I remember I got some strange feelings from this
place. My wife didn't even have a slight feeling, but her sister, well, it
was the most we could do to stop her leaving there and then."
"She was right to leave," remarked Blue, "there's a few ghosts here
who would have played with her, your wife would have been safe. But
as for now, I think it'd be best if you stay near me. Some here are not
to be messed with."
"You mean some of them are a bit nasty?"
"I wouldn't say nasty, evil maybe and definitely demonic. Most of them,
if you treat them as friends they will treat you as a friend, it'll break the
routine, having people to talk to.
There's usually something different going on here. Best tell me your
names though so that I can introduce you though."
"Oh, sure, my name is Terry, this is Phil."
"Come on then, let's go in," said Terry.
"Those woods back there, is there a reason for us not going into
them?" asked Phil.
"I'd like you to be able to have a look around the castle first. I"˜ll get
you to meet some of my friends."
"What is the reason why we don't go into the woods first?" asked Phil.
"I would prefer you not to have to die again, normally there's a lot of
red eyes watching us, I"˜d say they'd like to meet you."
"If they want to meet, that's good isn't it?" asked Phil.
"Their eyes are usually red!, some people may think they are evil, and
if they are evil? why would they let you go?. If you want to go in there,
do it just before we leave," said Blue.
"Fair enough," said Phil.
"Right," she said, "this path goes around the castle. There are two
ghosts that stay on the slope."
"What is known about them?" asked Terry.
"Nothing, but they have put a lot of people off by staring at them.
Back to the path, one of the ghosts is of a soldier who has been known
to help people."
"Help? help against what?" asked Terry.
"The other that uses this path is an evil entity, if your pleasant to the
soldier, he may protect you," stated Blue.
"I don't think you need worry about that evil one now," said the soldier,
"it hasn't been here for several days."
"Really, I wonder where it is," said Blue, looking around.
"Well, that's the thing, it hasn't been seen and I've been watching out
for it, I mean I always hoped it would go, but now, well," said the soldier.
"You said hoped!, it's begun!. YES!!."
"The haunted woods, have you seen anything in there?" asked Blue.
"Come to think of it, I haven't," replied the soldier
The Goddess Medusera appeared. Terry, Phil and the soldier stepped back.
"What is it Blue?, you sounded as though this is important."
"The soldier here said about the demonic entity that patrols this path.
He said he always hoped it would
go away, now it seems to have gone," said Blue.
"He hoped?"
"Yes Goddess, hoped!. And there's other evil that has gone."
"I'll pass the word around," said The Goddess Medusera.
"What is happening?" asked the soldier.
"The missing portion of hope that was held in Pandora's Box, it was
released, from what you said, it appears as though hope has started to
end the evil."
"So we can have a good look about?" asked Terry.
"If the soldier can stay with you, I'll tell the White Lady."
Blue ran to the castle then down to the basements, she called out for an old friend of hers. Fairly soon Margaret Pomeroy came to be at her side.
"What is it?"
"I've just heard, all evil is leaving. Please, don't lure any-one to their death," said Blue.
"Why?"
"If you kill, then you may be seen as evil and you'll disappear, hope is in the world."
"That may explain why the room at the bottom of the steps isn't able to be pitch black anymore," said Margaret.
"I'll leave the gardeners a message to tend your blue flowers," said Blue.
Terry stood behind her.
"Oh Terry, come here and meet Margaret."
"The White Lady with the blue flowers," said Margaret, "instead of getting my revenge on people, I'll let them see my blue flowers, hmm."
Blue went to be with Terry and Phil.
"Remember, treat each ghost as you would like to be treated," Blue said to them.
"Treat the ghost as a person, not a thing," said Terry.
"A conversation is all that is required," said Margaret.
"Ghosts talking to each other? we ca do that?" asked Terry.
"Like Blue and me?" asked The White Lady, "or did you forget that we are ghosts?"
"I never thought of you two as ghosts," said Terry, "or me come to think of it."
"On that note, I'll talk you through the others. That bush near the gates of the castle has two ghosts, possibly children, as they look as though they are playing hide and seek. When you go under the arch into the grounds there is a soldier, there's no need to worry about him, just greet him as you go in. Regardless of wether you see him or not."
"That's where Phil is, he's chatting with two soldiers."
"There's a butler and a woman that worked in the kitchen, in the tower there's something else. No-one has ever seen more than a light. Some-times you'll hear two horses running on the roof, then some noise of them falling to the ground."
"But if you should come down here with out Margaret, put the Blue flowers on the window ledge, if you can't see the window say out loud the flowers are a present, and leave it on the steps on the way out."
"Occasionally there will be another, that ghost is of a maid or a kitchen help. I think a part of her that holds her pain of dying," said Margaret.
"What do you mean by that?" asked Terry.
"Margaret was a lovely person in life, but her death was a long horrible death. To pass the time, Margaret would remember the good times, even just walking around the gardens. Eventually there became two of her, the other sometimes manifests in the gardens. Seeing a ghost can be exciting, but seeing two of the same ghost, that is unusual," said Blue.
"Two of her?"
"Yes, sometimes her other has been seen, her doppelganger."
"I'm glad we're here during the day," said Terry.
"Why?" asked Blue.
"Well, the room won't be dark will it?" asked Phil.
"I don't mean darkness, I mean total pitched blackness, day or night," said Blue.
"Wasn't there other ghosts there?" asked Terry.
"More ghosts?" asked Phil.
"Terry should know that by now, in this place, there are eight ghosts or more in the grounds of the house, then there's ten that stay outside the walls and ten or more in the Haunted Woods."
"Don't you know how many?" asked Terry.
"I never used to go in there, I was once told that a coven of devil worshippers, maybe twenty of them were killed in the woods one night."
"Were they just finishing for the night or had they just started," asked Phil.
"Does it make a difference?" asked Terry.
"What if they were killed after they had just called the evil dead?" asked Phil.
"They are said to be bad people when their feeling good, but far worse than that if they decide that they don't like you and you don't leave straight away.
Put it like this if you're a human, you never will. To the southern side of the woods in the
fields there are four ghosts that wander about, some people say that they are soldiers, I think they are the ghosts of those who helped kill the devil worshippers.
That may be a good thing but it could also be bad, bordering on dangerous, if you aren't as devout as they are, they may turn on you, and if that happens, run for your life. Imagine the religiously devout attacking you, then the devil worshippers coming into the field to protect you, who would you side with?"
"Charming place, I must remember to be careful in there," said Terry.
"Terry, a demon would be scared in there!"
"Are there other areas to be careful?" asked Terry.
"If your disrespectful to any of them, they'll know," said Blue.
"I see what you mean," said Phil.
"Then again an evil entity is liable to welcome another would be victim, it may appear to be a good ghost that was protecting you. Then when your guard is down, there will be no escape, not even including your death," said Blue.
"Do you intend to show us anywhere else?" asked Phil.
"Yes, the place I go to. You will like being there, now some of the beings there aren't your normal humans, two of them aren't human at all. But they are all good people," said Blue.
"So no evil ones?"
"No Phil, if they were evil, they wouldn't be allowed anywhere near the place. The other reason for going there, I asked Garet to find out about what you were searching for. He'll have probably asked Fred to help When has some news, he'll go there."
"Then lets go there," said Terry.
"See you later, Margaret," said Phil.
"Bye."
"You know, she is a nice person."
Blue, Terry and Phil materialised behind some bushes across the road.
"Why are we here?" asked Terry.
"I could have materialised on the steps, but if any-one saw us it would have scared them. Now we are thought of as normal people and that's if we are thought of at all, come on."
Blue took them to Hillhouse, opening the door to the museum she invited them in.
"What are we in here for?"
"To know who is here, take this mannequin for instance, the uniform is worn by the good guys."
"Just from the way you treated us, we knew that you were of a kre. Like many people, you have had your fair share of pain," said Terry.
"Do you know, this place isn't far from where we used to live," said Phil.
"I thought that," said Terry.
"Which way?" asked Blue.
"Further down the river," replied Phil.
"That'll be of help, when I asked Garet to help find the part of your mothers cross that was missing, he would have spoken to our friend in the Totnes police. How badly was your car damaged?"
"Beyond repair, but for spares it might have been okay, why?"
"I'm not saying this is so, but if the car was taken back to your families home, they may have the other part of the cross already. I'll call Garet."
Fred and Garet searched the car while Terry and Phil showed Blue their old favourite playing spots when they were children.
Fred called them over, holding the broken part of the cross. Terry said that he would go and get the bit they had.
"What will you do with both parts of the cross?" asked Blue.
"Leave them with our father," said Phil.
An hour later after their father got home from work. He sat at the kitchen table about to drink a cuppa, then he saw the cross, but he was unable to explain how, or why both parts of his it were on the kitchen table, in front of him.
