The New Doc is...

Loving this choice... he is great in Sex Education on Netflix... will be interesting to see what he brings to the show.
Sorry if its already been mentioned!

Nice choice! It’s nice to see a person of color get a chance to shine as the Doctor, and though I have not seen Sex Education, his performance there apparently earned him some accolades.

The next big question is what his outfit is going to be. I like the simplicity of Jodie’s, but maybe they’ll go a bit nuttier with the next Doctor. Also interested to see if Davies retcons the Timeless Child storyline.

I don't know how to have an opinion about this because I've never seen him in anything 😂 damn it people have been telling me to watch Sex Education for years.

Great show! Excellent actor!
The only thing I know about Sex Education is its filmed a few miles up the road, however I do believe its popular!

I was kinda hoping for someone older, not like Capuldi but we did the young fun thing with Matt's Doctor and I don't want a repeat of that.

I watched his interview and I'm feeling more excited to see his version of the doctor now- he seems to have a great sense of humour and very personable (opposite of how Jodie came across in interviews).

He also made this really humble statement and that's how you get Doctor Who fans in your camp:

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care."

“I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger.”

Only seen 1 or 2 episodes of Sex Education so can't comment too much on him. But its nice that they've gone with a more diverse choice and also a younger lesser known actor. I wish him the best of luck in the role. I just hope that if he's wrong for the role or the writing isn't good enough that's where the blame will be and not for other reasons.

Yeah I haven't seen him in anything but then Matt Smith was also an unknown actor and he's still the youngest person to ever play the doctor. So sometimes unknown and young can work out great.
I looked at his previous and he's really inexperienced. I mean, he's only been in one or two things where he was a named character. It's a risk. Although given who he did play, its obvious why RTD picked him.

As for diversity, I don't care. I'm entirely neutral on it; which is as it should be. Could be a plus depending on how good he is. I DO think he's way too young for the role but in the end I don't care, won't be tuning in anymore anyway.

Oof, that's a rough start, he misgendered The Doctor. 😛

Yeah the list of his acting credits on IMDB is very short- I think he's only well known for Sex Education but according to RTD he had an amazing audition and that's what he was cast for. He is still older than Matt Smith was when he played The Doctor so I guess young can work.

Or if it gets a very hard ignore like the Half Human bit from the TV Movie at best.

Plus he was born the same day the New Adventures novel Love & War (which debuts a certain Prof. Bernice Summerfield). Thus our first Wilderness Years Baby as the Doctor

His age doesn't really matter for me. If anything its a plus because its time to move away from the middle aged or older doctor's of the past. His lack of experience could be a problem, but as long as he's got a decent level of charaisma, decent timing and is likable that's pretty much all you need to play the role. The rest will be down the quality of the writing.

My question is about the name, is it The Doctor or is it Doctor Who?

The name of the show is Doctor Who, the name of the character is .. .. .. ?

But I would say that Matt Smith had quite a bit more experience under his belt; The Ruby In The Smoke, Party Animals, that Jimmy McGovern drama. That's a bit more than 3 seasons of TV as part of an ensemble cast.

Will young and inexperienced cut it? Especially with the show being in such a precarious position, almost on life support, you need a REALLY strong Doctor performance to match the (presumable) return to better writing.

Maybe this guy is another Matt Smith, I hope for the fans is that will be the case.

I'm not sure I agree the show's on the critical list, ha! Its too much of a brand name to be in any serious danger. There will always be a core fanbase. As long as he's decent then good writing should take care of the rest. It was the writing that let the last Doctor down big time from what I hear.

Not on the critical list...it was on its way to the morgue. 😛
Perfect choice! When he smiled, his entire face lit up...such a bright personality. He'll do a great job, I'm sure. I've never seen him in anything before, but I already like him. It was that amazing smile that did me in.

Now to cast the companions…hey BBC! Pretty sure that @Anyanka Bunny Slayer would be interested. Having a hardcore metal-head companion would certainly be a shake-up 😜

Looks like an interesting choice. I have not seen Sex Education but he seemed very sweet and charismatic in that interview. Some similarities to the other doctors. Might give Sex Education a go at some point to see him.

Consensus is that the show is at a twenty year low in terms of UK ratings; hemorrhaging viewers after every single Chibnall episode. There is a good reason that the BeeB is bringing back RTD; utter desperation.

Also it has literally been cancelled before because of much less.

There will always be a core fanbase.

Which have been leaving in droves. Who do you think were hacked off more by the Timeless Child garbage than the core fans?

Anyway, he can only hope that a fresh face and and old writing hand can restore the show's status. At one point it was one of the flagship BBC shows that they loved to show off.
