The Pack (Season 1)

The Pack

The Good;
Love Buffy and Giles training, you get a genuine sense of menace when Willow is taken hostage for the first time. You' don't see the twist of the zookeeper, he seems so rational although I'm baffled as to what exact power he hoped to gain from the hyena spirits (then again I don't really understand why the Mayor wished to be this big snake?). Great acting from Nic Brendon showing the first of his range (in truth neither Nic nor David are that good actors in season 1 but they grow better)

The Bad;
The story is pretty stupid, reminds me of an obscure old series called 'Big Wolf on Campus'

Best Line;
Giles; Xander is becoming a teenage boy, you'll have to kill him of course

Questions and observations;
The first time someone is imprisoned in the library book cage but by no means the last. Xander trying to force himself on Buffy is unusually disturbing, for a feminist symbol she seems to get sexually assaulted a lot (but maybe that's the point?). Another Buffy cliche is a Scooby going evil (by the end of season 7 I think the only characters never to have gone bad were Tara and Giles?). Jennifer Sky plays one of the pack and she was very good as Amarice in Xena (so you can link Buffy to Xena in one if you're ever playing 'Six degrees of Bufferation'). No Cordy (there really isn't room for her) and no Angel. At this point of course he's not a fighter, he really is just cryptic warning guy but of course that really kicks in during the next ep

6/10

Agree with your choice for best line. Giles is quite funny.
This whole season was about trying to figure out what kind of shinannagins the group could possibly get themselves in. It was a bunch of mostly independent episodes..."what can we have them fight in this episode?" I much prefer the later seasons that usually always had some sort of central storyline. This episode in particular felt like a filler episode. It was fun but did it contribute much to the overall Buffy universe?

i love Buffys practise session with Giles.His reactions to her aggression is priceless..😉!

Angelus and Spike were more than mean and plenty of people wanted to see them with Buffy!

Yeah but their are souless vampire they meant to be evil,but Xander was best friends to Willow and he human so i thought it was mean..

Well Xander wasn't exactly himself. I always see possession as kind of having your 'soul' possessed as well as your mind. Xander was acting like an animal, a pack animal to be more specific, and that's what animals in packs do, pick on the weak ones.

So I'd put Xander's behaviour here on some kind of par as soulless Angel and Spike.

Yay! This is one of the first episodes I saw! Automatically gave me a case of the "Can't Stop Watching"s'.

I watched this episode earlier and wondered about Xander and his true feelings towards Willow. He insulted her, called her pastey faced etc, so I would ask:
Was Xander expressing his deep subconcious feelings about Willow?

It was good to see that Xander could have a different character instead of acting like a love-sick puppy, he was very similar in S2's Halloween, he was totally in control and sure of himself.

Yeah Cordy digs him them too. And of course she digs Jesse in The Harvest for the same reasons.

The Groo aside she had terrible taste in men
