Didn't see a thread for this, hopefully there isn't one.

But, anyways, the highly anticipated and controversial film "The Passion of the Christ" is being released February 25th (Wednesday). If you don't already know about it, it goes through Jesus Christ's life, or at least a portion of it, and through the crucifixion of Him....I'm not exactly sure what point in time it ends. It's said to be a wonderful and moving movie, that many will enjoy. Mel Gibson directs the film, and put in 30 million dollars of his own money to help finance the movie. Anyways, I was just wondering what people thought about this, and also wondering if there were any fellow Christians that were going to see it.
 
It does the last 12 hours of his life. I'm not a Christian, but I'm really intrigued by this movie. The fact that it's completely in subtitles is amazing, and I love that Mel Gibson wouldn't let them speak English. I have a lot more respect for Gibson, just because he's willing to take a huge risk and using his own money to do it with.
 
I'm open minded. I've gotta agree with Miss World...staging it in Aramaic and Latin takes some grande cojones. And I give props to Mel for bankrolling it out of his own pocket (which makes some of the angry protests about it being an officially sanctioned Vatican propaganda flick puzzling...it's not like the Holy See couldn't pony up their own dough for film production, and they could buy a talented no-name director who would be much more amenable to their requests than an Oscar-winning director).

Mostly, I just hope it's an interesting film (which it looks to be). I'd love to watch it as a double feature with The Last Temptation of Christ, so that I could be firmly in the crossfire of the great public relations jihad between the Aggressively Adamant True Believers and the Obnoxiously Assertive True Non-Believers, reviled by all combatants and shielded by the lack of strength of my convictions.

I think this might be a great film. It might be a not-so-great film. Either way, it's just a film. It's not scripture, it's neither a validation or an affront to your beliefs nor is it a castigation of your agnosticism or apathy.
 
This looks like a really good movie! I can't wait to see it with my good ol' friend CHELSEA!!!! 😀😀....lol!
 
I want to see it. But I don't have any money so it might be a while before I do but it looks like a great film.
 
I think that it looks worth going to see. Even if you don't enjoy it, it's another perspective to look at. I'm up for seeing it.
 
Someone in town donated tickets to our senior class, so I took up the opportunity too see it this coming Sunday. I really like the fact that they used subtitles. Gives the movie more substance. I'm very open-minded when it comes to religion, so I have high hopes for this as a learning experience.

hope the explosions are as good!

I'm seeing this movie with my friend on the 28th. I already have tickets and am anxious to see what it is all about.

Wow. That must have cost a fortune. Do you go to a really small Christian school or something? That's kind of scary if you don't.

I probably won't see the movie, but from what I have seen it looks well made. I read in a newspaper article that the actor who plays Jesus was struck by lightning and suffered several other injuries during the making of the film. Kind of ironic for such a religious movie... 😀
 
I'm really rather skeptical about the movie. Being Jewish, I'm concerned about the movie being used to support anti-semitism. I know that there are few people who would use it as support for blaming Christ's death on the Jews, but it is naive to think that no one would blame Christ's death on the Jews. There are fundamentalists out there who do! Furthermore, this is a time when anti-semitism is becoming a problem in Europe, especially because of the ongoing conflict in the middle east.
 
It doesn't hold any interest for me. Brave (in Hollywood terms - doesn't come close to being really brave - ask a soldier in a war zone or a single mother on the edge of poverty or somebody coping with cancer) of Mel to do the Latin and Aramaic thing and if it helps him to profess his faith best of luck to him. I sincerely hope he has enough sense to avoid the anti-semitism thing but I've no intention of troubling the box-office to find out...best of luck to the film - may it get everything it deserves.
 
I'm not too inclined to go see it, but I'm finding it endlessly fascinating that people who haven't seen it have a very strong opinion about its artistic merit and its message (anti-semitism or whatever...).

I cant wait to see it. I'm going to dragg my boyfriend to it. It's all they've been talking about in youth group and church for the past month. I've heard it's pretty violent and stuff, but I think I'll surive. I'm still trying to decide if I believe in God or not...maybe this will tip the scale.

Yeah, I saw a preview and it's supposed to be a very true to life representation of a crucifiction...by all accounts a very unpleasant way to die...like any of them are pleasant...but you all know what I mean...

I understand the Jewish perception that the movie will create an unease among people. I think that, like you said, it's the fundamentalists that cause the trouble. I don't think we can hold a movie completely responsible, though. These fundies just need a reason to act out on hate, and they'll use this movie (or anything else for that matter) as an excuse. I haven't really attached myself to any specific religion, but I have a deep respect of all faiths. If anyone abuses anothers faith, then it's only out of pure ignorance in my opinion.
 
Frankly, there's not going to be anything in the movie that's not in the Bible. And you can bet the same people who would be 'fundamentalists' have indeed read the Bible lol. I just can't believe the backlash against this movie...it's a movie...you don't hear anyone complaining when they make movies about the Inquisition.
 
I won't be going to see this movie at all, its just not my sort of thing since i'm not religious at all.

Referring to Buffy's point above, I find that they always tend to make a fuss about religious movies. Look what happened when Dogma was released. And in Kevin Smith's own words....its a movie with a rubber poop monster in it!
