Maybe right at the start of the past decade but not in recent years. The last Oasis CDs I bought were Be Here Now and (the FAR superior to that) The Masterplan, and that was now close to a decade ago. Since then they haven't really released anything that I have found memorable or worth going out and buying. It is a shame because they once were a band you could get excited about when they had new material on the way.

And for that I'd have to know which bands you were talking about to know whether I agreed or not. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of shit out there to be heard (don't get me started on The Streets), not to mention that many of my favourite bands do come from the early 90s (there is still no band out there that can surpass Pearl Jam for me) but at the same time there is a lot of material from new bands that I think is excellent. But then musical taste is one of the most subjective things in the world.
 
I'm with you on the Flyleaf love. Been listening to them for a while now, though, so they're not nessecarily new to me.

But I am re-falling in love with The Dresden Dolls. I haven't listened to their stuff in a while, and when my friend drives me around that's all she plays. My boyfriend hates them with a burning passion, but I'm in love. I'm so owned.

I couldn't name a single Pearl Jam song.

The albums Oasis have released haven't matched up to Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory, but show me one band who released gold after gold. Nobody does. Look at The Beatles. Generally considered the greatest band ever, they have a great catalogue of songs, but when you analyse their albums... You tend to find some good songs intermingled with a pile of sheep shit.

Who Feels Love is a top song on a pretty crumby album(Standing on the shoulder of Giants).

I never was the greatest Oasis fan. As a teenager my bands were primarily, Pink Floyd, The Doors and the Stone Roses. Its just recently I've been delving back into Oasis, and I am starting to think they are possibly the most underrated band we have ever produced. Honestly, Live Forever, anyone?

And you can't tell me that the current crop of bands aren't crap. There was a real euphoria about Oasis when they appeared on the horizon, there hasn't been that feeling about any band since then.

I mean, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand and Keane. Somebody just shoot me if this shower of charlatans is what we are left with. Or hand me a gun and I'll shoot them.

The last band I got into was Radiohead...five years ago. They don't exactly make music that you can share with others...

Anyway, I'm way too cool to initiate myself into a particular group or movement because its the current in-thing.

See, it was never about that, at least not for me anyway. I didn't "become" a grunge poster boy so that I could be part of something. The truth is that I already was one, long before the bands came along. I was just waiting for the right music scene to arrive that expressed who I was and that just happened to be the Seattle sound. It was never about it being the "in-thing", it was just my thing.

I never much cared about what anyone else thought about my musical choices, which I guess is proven by the fact I'm still proudly into grunge a very long time after it stopped being "cool". 😉

It might have appeared so, but I wasn't implying that you were into grunge because it was deemed "cool". You're your own man, I respect that.

So are there any new bands that you can recommend I check out. I have a tendency for bands with a charismatic frontman(the Doors, Stone Roses, Oasis) with a mystique, almost desert, grainy quality with their sound.

Well, from what I know of what you like to listen to the first band that springs to mind that you might like is Buckcherry.

Josh Todd, their singer is definately what you would call charismatic and their sound and lyrics might be something you would enjoy. It's always hard to judge what others will and won't like but give them a listen and let me know what you think.

Damn you ARcane - I was jusy about to wax lyrical about Buckcherry! I've seen the vid to Crazy Bitch twice and had to go get 15 - I love it. Wikipedia describes them as sleaze rock - I mean what the hell is that all about! Then I looked at the other bands they categorised as the same and G'n'R and Aerosmith have been on my fave list for years (echoing back to the 'unfashionable statement - once you get past 35 who cARES!)

Pearl Jam - my ex used to roadie for a band called Claytown Troupe that supported them on their first UK tour, so I wasn't that into them out of principle (conflict of interest!) ..... plus Eddie is no Chris Cornell (uberhottie) so they were my second fave grunge band - I liked it a bit heavier. Vs. is still one of my top 20 albums though.

THEY are the real posers. Like what you like and dont be afraid of what that means to other people. Okay, rant finished, back on topic...

I never would have guessed you were a MCR fan! 😉

But I agree with you. I hate it that when a band gets a little mainstream success it becomes the cool thing to do to slag them off. Green Day had the same problem with American Idiot. Just because they were getting regular radio play many of their old fans didn't think they were cool enough anymore so started with the hating.

I reckon that the coolest people are the ones that like what they like, regardless of anyone elses opinion. Doesn't matter if only you like it or a billion other people do. You make up your own mind.

Hell freggin' yeah! Thank you! Like what you like and stick true to your convictions. That's the only way to go if you ask me. I enjoy Green Day as well. Old stuff and new. If the band gets the attention good for them! Rock on!

See, that is what rock used to be all about. Not conforming and being an individual. At one time the whole point was to go with your own heart and not care about being part of the crowd.

These days there are so many subgroups of rock that people are more concerned about being part of the incrowd or current cool rock genre that they don't put the music first.

Metal, grunge, punk, goth, emo, whatever! I like bands from all the rock genres and I'm not going to pretend otherwise just to look cool.

I'm right there with you. It pisses me off more when it goes the other way though...I've known people who only thought it was cool to be into obscure bands that nobody new about. If you like anything in the mainstream you're a poser. I think people like that are the posers. If that's what you like, cool, but if you judge something based on anything but the music, like you said, you're just not getting the point of what music is truely about. Sh*t, if you hear a Justin Timberlake song and it strikes yu in an emotional way, say you like it...yeah, it may feel like a guilty pleasure but so what? That's what music is for...to light a fire in your heart.:band:
 
Except theres only one problem with your little theory here.

My Chemical Romance are still complete shit (sorry for the language but its true) 😛

And I dont say that cos its "the in thing" to say. I say it because its how I really feel 🙂
