The Thing You Disliked Most About S6?

I was recently at a panel with James Marsters at a con and he explained that Joss asked the writers to think about something they regretted, that kept them up at night. One female writer said that she pushed herself on her boyfriend, thinking that if they had sex he would change his mind on leaving her. However, the situation translates differently when it's a man pushing himself on a woman. Neither are good, but one appears more drastic than the other.

I've heard that story; James gets asked about it quite a lot. The situation translates very differently even on a female empowerment show such as this one and I still don't think it was a good move at all, considering we were meant to sympathize with Spike for trying to romance Buffy and then her treating him like dirt. They should have kept it fairly lighthearted as it was in Season 5, but since the theme of Season 6 might as well be "life can be a bitch", I certainly understand their reasons for wanting to take the material to a darker place.

I think of the Spuffy relationship as a warning in general. Both were at fault for hurting themselves and each other. Buffy played with fire and Spike kept telling himself "She'll love me, She'll love me". In the end, they broke each other's hearts in different ways. Spike's was broken in the obvious way, whereas Buffy never wanted to hate Spike, but it was inevitable when he assaulted her.

The only thing I hated about season 6 were the nerds. Other than that I thought it was a great season. I really enjoyed the magic addiction story.

Actually you might say that Tara's death is the most logical of the whole show. Its the thing which tips Willow over the edge and completes the transformation into Dark Willow.

Lots of things I disliked about season 6. The magic as a drug not even just a metaphor anymore. The trio, the trio, the trio! Only the first was worst. Tara being killed. 😡 Spike & Buffy! 🙄 The writing in general really.

But it might've been more interesting if Werewolf Oz had killed Tara, and Willow killed him.

Sometimes, Willow was actually rather mean to Tara, now that I think about it. 🙁

That idea does intrigue me I won't lie. But then having Oz return again just for that might have seemed a bit forced. I liked how they handled Tara's death personally.

i do agree with this, and like practically everything this show does, it is in service of the over-arching narrative of the show. I dislike her death, but i don't disagree with it. tara is one of my favorite characters, and it hurts to see her go, especially as she never comes back for any reason, either in flashback or with the first in season 7. i would have loved to see amber benson after that moment. at the same time, it sort of makes her the deadest buffy character of them all, which gives it the most resonance.

i also dislike--but don't disagree with--xander leaving anya at the altar. it makes sense: xander is really quite young, he's insecure about getting married (who isn't) and that dude filled his head with self-doubt, which he was clearly receptive to (like he said to anya, "it didn't take much to scare him away"). but darnit, i like xander and anya and i wanted them to be together and i hate how anya's arc ends. but that's good storytelling right there. the point isn't to be happy about the characters all the time, but to care what happens to them.

this is why season 6 is SO good. we don't like everything that that each character does, but we tend to care what they do. buffy always bravely chose directions that weren't necessarily the most flattering actions for the characters, but it sure made them real and believable, people we can empathize with.

Tara's death. I'll never forgive Joss for that.

Spike's reason to get a soul. Spike's attempt to rape. Spike and Buffy's relationship. Actually everything about Spike in Season 6.

Xander not telling Anya that he wasn't really ready to get married.

Giles leaving Buffy in the middle of her depression. I mean, what the f*** was that about.

The Trio, especially Warren.

Spuffy and everything that entailed- I think it dragged both characters down and it was only the talents of SMG and JM that enabled Buffy and Spike to survive that season with any likeability intact.

they killed Tara duh.... oh and dawn too many episodes sorta centered around her yawnnn

Agreed especially that rape scene it was kinda out of character and very disturbing

Agreed. I wish they'd never done that scene.
While watching it for the first time, I disliked the nerds and the wedding.

Now I like the nerds (big time), while the wedding still sucks. 😉

Overall S6 is my most favorite. Spuffy, Burger Buffy, Dark Willow. Jummy. 🙂

it was just sooooooo bloody sad lol.
Warren was the scariest "big bad" for me (i know depression was the real big bad for s6, but you know) in that he was the most realistic. Sure there were terrifying creatures like the master and the mayor but they were monsters, warren was a human and is someone i can say i have unfortunately come across in my life and it was uncomfortable for me to see all that he did. I liked being able to watch Buffy and have a bit of an escape viewing the show and seeing the trio and warren made it all a bit uncomfortable for me 🙁

Also Tara dying completely broke me, ive been vocal about her relationship with willow not being my favorite but tara as a character has always been so important to me and i was devastated. But i also thought it was the perfect way to get dark willow so then i hate myself for being in two minds about that plot lol.

I've been looking through season 6 the last couple of nights. And offhand, what I dislike the most about it is how it's like a really bad, clueless afterschool special. Looks like someone believed all that propaganda shoved down our throats in school, from Willow going hardcore junkie after one visit to Rack (which would make Rack's professional unprofitable if that was normal), and hitting like rock bottom the second time, to later when Warren goes and buys a gun from a pawn shop right then and there, no questions asked, and more. I just can't take it seriously.

'Course then there's the bills that can be paid with a job from a fast food franchise, starting pay at that (very unusual in that it doesn't rotate their employees every few months to avoid paying bennies, but then maybe that's due to the demon munching on most of the employees anyway) to super weddings that are apparently not that expensive. This is not realistic (ETA: I point this out because people keep saying how realistic it is, not that I need it to be realistic to be enjoyable).

That storyline is poorly written and I hate the visuals they used. On the business being unprofitable if that was the case? Well no, because this is hardly a regular business we are talking about here. I doubt the clients are your avenge joe off the street😀

Something tells me if the episode was set in 2017 people wouldn't be questioning how easy Warren gained access to a gun😉

I think at that point Buffy had to just take any job she could get, beggers can't be choosers and all that. I do like that they touch on such things.

The problem I have with people attacking the show for not being realistic is that Joss has made it very clear that its not supposed to be realistic. He has said that its about the metaphor and about the emotional truth of the characters. As a show Buffy sets up certain rules, and when or if it steps away from them, that is what should be questioned.

Yep. Because even I know, as a Scottish person who has never even seen a gun irl, that there is a lot of paperwork and tests involved and at LEAST a ten day wait when it comes to purchasing firearms in the US from a licensed firearms dealer. Please correct me if I'm wrong. That scene annoys me too. If they wanted to be realistic about the "ease of access to guns" then they should have shown Warren stealing a gun from a friend or family member who is already licensed to own one.
