Oh, I forgot about the episode when Riley returns. I hated that. It annoyed me that he married a super soldier woman who could kick ass, when he left Buffy because she was strong and didn't need him to protect her. Neither did Sam. It didn't really make sense to me... Also, the way he left was somewhat poetic. I wish they'd left it at that.
If Riley never came back after "Into the Woods" that would have been sufficient for me too. I'll probably need to rewatch "As You Were" to make a properly informed decision about this, but I think Riley was ok with Buffy being physically stronger than him. It was her not being emotionally open to him that he couldn't handle. I don't think we find out enough about Riley's relationship with Sam to say that their relationship was the same as Buffy/Riley.
But I reckon, Sam is probably able to open up to Riley in a way Buffy never felt she could and also they're pretty equal in terms of everything - physical ability, emotional resilience etc. Whereas Buffy always had the "upper hand" in Buffy/Riley. I think I remember talking about this in another thread haha. Also, I don't think Riley ever had a problem with strong women. Going by his choice to be with Sam, he seems to prefer them.
