Hi everyone

okay, I was asking about a weight loss type thread and TR told be I could open one here at Social Studies.
I thought it would be best if this wasn't just about losing weight, but also about anything with weight (like some people have to gain weight)

Okay, so any of you trying to lose weight right now?
I am. It's probably the zillionth time I've tried, but this time I'm really determined to make it! So see, this is another good thing with a thread like this, maybe we could all motivate each other to stick to our goals.

Hi! I'm currently on the LA Weightloss plan. I started on Jan. 5th and so far have lost almost 15 lbs. I'm trying to lose 76 total though (I gained a LOT of weight with my son), so I still have a long way to go. Doing good so far!

I go to Sparkpeople.com
I love that place. You can keep track of everything you eat, calories, exercise and weight and they have a huge support system, lots of articles to read for advice. I was down 9lbs but I haven't been feeling well so I've been eating more then normal.

I want to lose 15 pounds in total, but let's just say chocolate, Oreos, crisps and cookies all around aren't really helpful.
I tried Weight Watchers (okay, I don't know if this count, I wasn't actually a member or anything, I just now the point system through a friend of me who had to lose a LOT of weight (and she did great)) and wasn't really convinced. Like (I hope you're all at least a bit familiar with how it works) according to this list she gave me you're only allowed to gain 12 points per week to eat by doing sports. 'Sports' as they defined it, also included normal walking. So with my going to school, the city centre, etc. all by foot I would already have like 12 points per week, without actual sports. Maybe I just didn't get the system the way they meant it, but that would be bad for me, I love sports (yay, jogging)
Right now I'm trying to lose weight all by myself, just with healthy food and an absolute no on too sugary stuff. I've been brave since Monday, but no idea how long it's gonna be til I fall back and give in to the seduction called chocolate.

maybe try and just have chocolate on 1 day a week
I'm tryin' to lose weight, a lot of people tell me that I'm to young to diet and stuff, but I'm unhappy with my weight, so there is a reason, I'm not hugely fat, but I'm overweight and uncomfortable with it, so yeahh.

I don't have one of those high metabolisms so I have to work really hard. I find that in my case, most diets don't work because I love food way too much.
I am also really lazy and hate to work out. But we all have to take really great care of our bodies. So I will share with you how I keep in shape.

I truly do try to eat a lot through out the day. But not alot of heavy stuff. If I am up early enough I eat a nice breakfast. Usually Canadian bacon, instead of real fatty bacon, and an egg, and I add a little cheese to the egg and even some of the bacon. Just chop it into bits. And try to add a piece of fruit like a couple of orange slices or kiwi or anything you enjoy. And I always have a glass of orange juice and a glass of milk.

Between breaky and lunch I try to eat a handful of nuts, like almonds or peanuts. In their most purest form. If not nuts then a fruit or some veggie sticks. This helps keep a slow metabolism on the move.

Then for lunch. I try to eat a salad or depending on my snack, some veggies. Pita's and things like that, contrary to popular belief, are not as healthy as you think they are. So if you want a sandwich. Use white bread instead. Look it up if you don't believe me. 🙂

for dinner, now dinner is the tricky part. We are all most likely used to a nice hearty dinner. Well it's best to have a grilled 'something' whether it be Chicken breast, turkey breast or sometimes even a steak. If you want a side, best thing is salad or a very healthy rice. If you must have potatoe then find a way to have it without adding too much crap to it. 😉

Then dessert. They changed the last time of the day you should eat from 6pm to 7pm. So if you eat dinner at these times, it's best to leave a snack out. If you eat before hand, try to throw in another handful of nuts, or some fat free jello. A yogurt at this time isn't the best thing to have, but it's not a terrible thing either. Always best to keep all that dairy in the beginning of your day, so your body has time to work it off.

Now how do I keep my body in shape? By getting off my lazy butt. It really sucks and most times I dread actually getting up to do it. But once I am doing it, it's fine. I enjoy it.

I joined a gym that has raquetball. So I play that as often as possible. Then if I am tired of that I use the cardio machines and weight machines. Doing weights can be more beneficial in some cases and it makes you work harder. If you don't believe me there either, I say, look it up. Always good to be knowledgable.

Now that the spring is rolling around we, my spouse and I, have started filling up our daily activities planner. Now that may sound geeky to you, but it really works for us.
Everyday we write an activity down. Whether it's Rollerblading for the day, or biking, a long walk with the dogs at the park or going to the gym. We try to change up the activities daily so we don't get too bored. We also throw in here and there a game of catch, or kicking the soccer ball to each other. It may not seem as active as the other activities but it gets us off our butts, out of the house, and active.

If you want to pm me on any meal ideas, please do, I can really help you out. Or, if you want to ask flat out in this forum and arent shy, I can do it here too.

Wow -- a virtual personal trainer! That's kind of like an oximoron -- you're trying to prevent laziness but you're handing it out on the Internet, which, requires laziness! :lmao:

If you just drink a whole lot of pop, try cuttin' down to diet. You get used to it and it helps with the weight thing.

I am on the net to fill up some of my free hours. Pop is the worste thing you can add to your lifestyle.

like i said, diet works for me!
stupid question, but what is pop? I tried looking it up, but all the translations I found didn't really fit

Pop is Mid-Westerner for Soda.

Umm... if you're looking for a good way to lose weight, I can tell you how I lost 10 pounds a couple of years ago. I drank only water (no pop or anything), ate poultry instead of beef, and swam 10 laps a day. I lost 10 pounds in like 2 weeks that way. Of course, I didn't keep it up. I'm at a pretty nice, healthy weight, though, so I'm not terribly worried. I could do with the increased energy of a better diet and healthier lifestyle, but... I'm lazy. 🙂

The beginning of October I tried, and stayed on, a blood sugar meal plan. Which is pretty much healthy food with a few sweet tastes added in. Not only did I feel better (energy levels, better sleep, less moody), but in 6 weeks I was down 10lbs. That was without exercising (not something I promote, I'm personally just lazy). I allowed the holidays to ruin my happily structured way of eating and put back on some of what I lost, now I stick to the different breakfast and lunch options pretty well but I space out on the snacks and dinner meals. Which is what I want to get back to cause I think the dinner's really helped with the solid sleep. I really would like to kick my ass into restarting it again. Maybe this thread is a sign or something... 🙂

Anyhoo, since I'm not sure if it's cool to link it, go to your search engine and type:

diet for steady blood sugar women's health magazine

It should be the first one that comes up. I get the actual mlagazine in the mail (my favorite mag EVER) but the meal plan is online. Just make sure the url is 'womenshealthmag'.

I tried Weight Watchers, but didn't really get the point system. Like you get, say 18 points a day, but then you have 35 points per week that you can use anytime. So I really didn't feel like I was ever eating less b/c of all those extra points. Plus, then you can earn the extra ones from walking & stuff. I'm really liking LA though. I'm hoping to be down to my goal weight before my husband comes home from Iraq next January. I think the biggest help was just drinking water, I drink a ton of water now, and I'm losing weight, and I feel better & my skin is looking better too. 🙂

Awe, my prayers are with you and him.
A good thing to do, is, say for lunch, eat a salad with whatever it is you're having and eat it first. That cuts your hunger so you're not STARVING by the time you get to your real lunch and so you can eat a better portioned lunch. Same for dinner, but eat cooked veggies (stir fry's are good) and then a normal portion of a meat and a small side of carbs.

🙂

I'm trying to lose weight myself. I put on so much when I was pregnant. I was having trouble losing it because I wasn't working (that is how usually stay in shape). Then my doctor gave me an ultimatum (because my cholestrol was really high) to watch what I eat and exercise or be put on meds. So I joined the YMCA as soon as I got home from Christmas vacation. So I go work out daily except this week I haven't cause I've been too sick to go. It's been going pretty well so far. I'm only 35lbs from being back down to my prepregnancy size. And on a good note my cholestrol is not as high at my last check up so no meds.

I've always had problems with my weight, I'm not the healthiest person and in the last 3 or 4 years my fitness level has gone down and down. When I was a child I was pretty chubby but when I was about 6 I was taken into hospital and ever since then I've always been underweight. The problem is I can't eat much at a time without it making me sick, a bowl of rice is enough for me at dinner. I've been trying for years and years now to put on weight but with not being able to eat much at a time it's very hard. When I was a teenager I used to compete in athletics competitions and loved running but since giving up on that my fitness level has just gone down but I haven't put on any weight.

I dunno if anyone can help but does anyone know how to put on weight with not being able to eat much at once?

If you add a little bit to each meal everyday, just a little. It will progress into a little bit more as time goes on.

maybe try eating 5-6 really small meals everyday
I'm about 50 lbs overweight. I hate exercising (it's not laziness so much as most of my energy is taken up with mental activity). I love food. I have chronic bronchitis, so it's hard to exercise even when I want to; my lungs just can't handle the extra work necessary. I think I'd need to drop about 20 lbs before I can even begin to exercise, but I have no idea how to do that. I don't really eat a LOT, but I don't eat well. I drink diet soda (trying to cut down to more water to help with the ooky feeling I've had for the past few months as well as the sleep problems I've had for the past few months).

Right now, my plan is that when we move and my hubby starts working, I'll find a Bali Total Fitness or something similar with personal trainers who will know how to work with someone in my situation healthwise. Also, the Curves diet works, but it's expensive and requires a lot of prep time, so again when my hubby starts working (which will mean we have more money than we do now as grad students), I might be able to do that. For now, though, I just need to concentrate on graduating.

What about substituting the pop for a sugar free juice?
I would love it if soda drinkers, especially Diet soda, read this information. I heard this long ago and was going to post it here but didn't want to not have something to back me up.

The Diet Dish

What I had heard on the news was that diet soda gave people the symptoms of MS, and when cutting it out of their diets, they were able to realize, it was not MS but just the diet soda intake. But these two pages may help us understand a little more.

I am not saying anything is concrete. But it never hurts to read up.

What the f... I thought. Then I read the link. phew I thought they meant MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
Diets are, I came to this conclusion, a pain in le derriere. The diet itself tends to be depressing as the more you know you're not allowed something the more you want it. Plus, once you've gone down to your target weight and you come off the diet it's been proven that you will put the weight back on....and a little bit extra!

My way of keeping weight at a healthy level was no dieting, I just generally watch what I eat. Calorie counting worked as well. I mean not obsessively- just to check I wasn't going over the 2000 a day required to maintain your weight. This meant I could indulge in cakes and chocolates, fully embrace my love of Italien food while just generally eating healthily. I've been a salad fiend since the age of five so....haha. But this 'method' always worked for me as I maintained a very healthy weight appopriate for my height (A measly 5'4 :sigh:....)

However since getting pregnant I've just been like 'woo!' since I view it as a reason to just eat a few more of the sugary things....teehee. 'Eating for two now' is the best phrase/excuse I have ever come across. Mwa ha

But soft drinks are *extremely* bad for you. I read somewhere that drinking them constantly can cause one to put on a pound within a fortnight. Plus cola soaks all the calcium out of your blood so your blood is forced to replace the calcium with what is contained in your bones, opening you up to risks such as brittle bone disease and osteoporosis. Yee gods. Once seeing that I stuck to lemondade and only had it once in a while. haha.

You can kick start a healthy eating plan by trying programs like The Zone and The South Beach Diet. I've done both of them to help focus myself on eating better foods, and they work.

Ultimately, you are not going to see fabulous results without the combination of eating properly and excercise. Unless you're blessed with good genes, you absolutely have to excercise.

I used to think I was eating good by having those 'lean' frozen meals and a diet pop, but that's not the truth. The prepackaged diet/lean meals are just about as bad as the regular ones. I would recommend staying away from them.

Having salads for lunch or half a turkey sandwich with some veggies and cheese is good. Keep your snacks to things with no trans fat or sugar (I eat goldfish...they fill you up and they're not too terrible)

When my husband and I got married I weighed 128 pounds (I know, I know, what a cow!) 🙂 Now two years later, after a strict daily excercise/weight training program and defined eating program (where I do get to treat myself with a snack if I want it, you can't live with cutting out the things you crave), I am down to 105. But it took a lot of time and hard work. It takes extreme commitment and motivation (which was shot this week with Valentine's Day! Yumm...candy!)

My main problem is that I can't decide for myself what to have for lunch/dinner (only one, depending on what day of the week it is) because my Mom cooks. I love her food, it's just sometimes really fatty with a lot of calories. ANy advice how I could work that into a diet? I don't want to hurt my Mom by telling her she shouldn't cook what she likes to eat.

Enjoy her food, just eat it in moderation
