I can't be the only one that's taken away some quite profound life lessons from watching Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Dollhouse etc (with the latter giving the viewer a lot of questions to think about). From things like fish of the day carpe diem, to pondering what it means to be human and to have emotions... But what did you learn from watching? (Maybe learn's the wrong word, because I kinda already knew this stuff, but watching these programmes kinda reinforced the messages for me, if that makes sense. Make of the phrasing what you will 😛).

I myself learned never to stop fighting for what I wanted, and what I thought was right. In my case that's with my psychiatrist to get the help I deserve after years of abuse (which unfortunatly I am still fighting on four years after seeking help). I also learnt that it is possible to recover from being a bit of a bad person, as long as you are willing to do everything in your power to put things right, are prepared to pay the price for whatever you have done, and are willing to accept that not everybody will accept you've changed.

Family can be found in just about anyone - from friends, to people with a bad past, to actual family.

Also - all relationships end in destruction and death 😉

That's pretty much exactly what I was going to write so instead I'll just go - hear hear, and ditto.

not to mention "Five by five"

I agree with TV above, but I like the quote "If there isn't any bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world" better. It really sums up the way I try to live my life and it was such a aha-moment when Angel said it ♥

I've become a much more accepting and forgiving person over the past few years. This has more to do with the fact that I've grown up and has gotten a feeling that I more "get" things and know my place in the world, than it has to do with watching Buffy or Angel, but I think the shows has helpt me realise how I've changed and what kind of person I strive to be (I don't think you can say "I'm this person" and that's it, I think you really have to work hard to be kind, and try to make an effort everyday to be so). I'm not as worried as I used to be and I don't judge people the way I did when I was younger. I really notice this when I find myself liking characters and really being on their side (like Connor) that I know I would have not gotten at all if I had seen the show earlier. This is a really nice discovery on my part.

Also, Buffy was the first show I saw that had such a strong and amazing female lead. I really see myself in her, and it was nice to be affirmed in that way, and seeing how a women like her lived her life and realising it could be done, and I wasn't this crazy person for wanting the things I wanted (like being with someone that treats me like an equal and standing on my own and doing things for ME, not to make other people happy).

Queen Crabbit agrees: I just love this post 🙂

Thank you! I love that you made this thread. 🙂 I have thought about this before, but it was really nice to write it down, it made me proud of myself. Sounds like you yourself has done some pretty amazing changes yourself too, so I hope you're super proud of you too! 🙂

I just love this post :)
From the Spuffyrelationship I learnt that love is everwhere, sometimes where you least expect is.
And that some girls are more than meets the eye 😉

Not to worry when your love or best friend dies, you'll see them as much as you did before, more often that that even.

When the school has a new librarian the nicest thing to do if bust down the door and yell "what's the sitch?!"

The small blonde girl is gonna save the world and be really witty while she's at it. (yay!)

Be very careful of what you dress up as for Halloween.

If you meet someone online, he is most likely a robot.

Your little sister may have fake memories.

If your roommate is annoying and listens to Cher she must be a demon.

That every frat house of your collage is haunted.

Beer is evil.

The cooler a club is the more likely it is a vamps number one hang out spot.

So called "normal guys" don't exist. The ones that do will always be jerks. Except some guy called Xander and he dates demons anyway so stay away.

The animal cracker mocks you with it's monkey pants.

Every birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas or halloween will end in disaster.

Leather and smoking makes you one of the bad guys.

The nice teachers will all die.

Vampires with souls started of as lame, but it's becoming a fast growing trend.

Fire bad, tree pretty.

You wear the cheese, it does not wear you.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRUST THE BUNNIES!

Just because the first vampire that you fall in love with is a brooding, self righteous, anal retentive twit who thinks that he has the right to manipulate other people's lives, doesn't mean that they're all that way.

Just when the hero finally admits that she loves her Champion, he bursts into flame.

Don't make the witch mad unless you want to get literally skinned alive.

Don't tick off the little blond with the rocket launcher.

What are you talking about, Buffy fell in love with A... oh.
To not fade away.

That the house always wins.

There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb.

And that there's a hole in the world ;(

things we have learnt from the Whedonverse

That one person can make a difference.
That death is not always permanent when it pertains to certain characters.
That being a Bad Boy or Bad Girl makes you popular.
That things are not always as they seem.
That Rocket Launchers are cool.
That people change.
That people move on.
Sometimes love hurts.
The one you love can become your greatest and most fierce enemy.
That a gypsy curse can have a loophole.
That there is such a thing as a good vampire with a soul.
That death is scary and final.
That even though you live in vampire country you don't necessarily have to carry holy water or a cross on you to protect yourself with.

You know, even though I've learned tons from the show, I honestly think that I've learned the most from YOU guys, my fellow fans. You guys teach me things and alter my morals practically everyday. 😀 Where would I be without my BBers? 😉

But I'll try to remember what the show taught me... Hm.. To be wary of geeky losers? That sex in an abandoned and collapsing building is the very best kind? 😛 I dunno. I'll have to repeat the "Carpe Diem" one and the one about the small actions make the biggest difference. I'm always very happy when somebody I don't know holds the door open for me. 😀

Something about the quote "It's not about right. It's not about wrong. It's about power." actually really affected me. I think that it made me consider more unconventional sides and look at the shades of gray in a situation instead of just black and white. And perhaps it brings out my more heartless side? 😛

Same thing with the quote "You think you know... What you are... Who you will become.. You haven't even begun.", it works as a reminder that I really am still very young, and I have my entire life in front me. I usually think that I have my whole life planned, that this is how it's going to be and everything is set in stone, but the reality of it is that I'm going to change a LOT before I become an adult, and so everything is probably going to be much much different. 😀

Uhm... Tillow, especially in S4, taught me what I'd like in an relationship, and showed me that not all relationships were, well, bad, like I usually think.

And I'm sure that there's more than just that, but I can't quite remember it right now. :biggrin3:

When the school has a new librarian the nicest thing to do if bust down the door and yell "what's the sitch?!"

Nahh, that's totally more of a "Kim Possible" move than a Buffy one. 😀

To demand better. A better life, better friends, better job. A better me.

Also, just because the second vampire to fall in love with you is a neutered, whining, pantie stealing wannabe with notions of grandeur and badassery doesn't mean you shouldn't stake the sucker on sight. 😛

*Waves at WA* 😉
