To Kill a Vampire..

But you can stake a vampire with anything that isn't wood, and it won't die.

It isn't the staking or the damaging of the physical heart that dusts the vampire, it's something to do with the wood coming into contact with the unique vampire heart.

But why was James able to live for a while with his heart removed? Unless your using that whole mysticism thing, which is undebatable unless you can cough up proof.

I hate to do this, but when discussing the show we want people to maintain their own beliefs, perspectives, but when there are things in the transcript that show otherwise, some members might tend to disagree. Although of course your opinion is still valuable. But in this thread and others, it will most likely get questioned. Because hey, that is the point of discussion right, to try to get some sort of answer and to question things.

We don't what the organ donor did with it do we?

But it is obvious that removal of the heart from a vampire does not AUTOMATICALLY kill the vampire. The process does eventually kill the vampire though. But there are too many holes to correctly identify the truth.

And N4H has a great insight with the whole "non-stake" thing when used against the vampire. Non-wooden objects seem to have no effect on the heart.

that's a very good point (the why it has to be wood). mythologically speaking, it can only be wood, but then it creates a loophole - how would you explain that the vampire dies without a heart?

It doesn't kill the vampire immediately. It kills it after "6". We don't know exactly 6 what, but my best guess given the text would be hours.

The vampire heart still appears to have some important function, we just don't know exactly what that is.

Why didn't they just chop his head off?

wes said that james has become temporary invincible after his heart removal - "absolutely can not be killed", that just strengthens my theory that something was done to him by that doctor - i think the deal was that the doctor gets the vampire heart and james gets a few hours of invincibility to try and kill angel.
as for why he didn't chop his head off, i think that after wes told him he cannot be killed for a while, he just instinctively stalled.

I'd think missing a head would stall him 😛

Any other thoughts on the breathing thing?
