Too old for Buffy

Exactly.

Not to mention the 1000lb gorilla in the room. What would a Buffy (current universe Buffy) be like without Angel and Spike. Both Boreanaz and Marsters have said they can no longer play the vampers (even if they wanted) so their exclusion, even if written off, would still be the element to take you out of the movie. I do not believe, unless you reboot it, you can have a Buffy movie without either Angel or Spike.

Then of course, the possibility that Nicholas Brendon could have difficulty getting and keeping his part, you might have a Buffy movie without Angel, Spike and Xander. So... yeah, I think Sarah saying she is too old is a way to say it wont happen.

But isn't that a bit like saying that Angel couldn't have his own show without Buffy? Buffy was always an indeperndent character. Yes those two became bit parts of her narrative, but the show could go on with or without them.

I have some doubts over whether SMG can still play Buffy, but at the same time I don't think anyone else should play her. And if that means no movie, then so be it.

He didn't have his own show without Buffy. To have a full-length Buffy movie that takes place after the destruction of Sunnydale and not even have Angel or Spike in it, I believe you would have many people upset. Honestly.

Well he did in a way. Yeah it wouldn't have happened without Buffy and there was the whole crossover thing, but after awhile he was very much a character of his own show. I take your point, but I wouldn't see it as the be all and end all having Angel and Spike around. They could still make small appearances surely.

They could make a vampire slayer tv series or movie but without Buffy as the main slayer. I could see a tv show with Buffy as a counselor or in a leadership position guiding the main slayer or slayers. The Buffy show is done and it should be left alone.

They already said they were too old to play the characters and they wouldnt want to.. but most certainly all you would need would be for cameos, but if the actors dont/wont play the characters you cannot do what they did with the Buffy stand-in on Angel. You would have to have some type of closure for them, otherwise it's an empty movie. Especially after this long.

Yeah I really don't know how I would feel about that. If they still had some involvement from Buffy or at least if the new character was linked to Buffy somehow then maybe. I guess it is a better idea than a Buffy movie without SMG or Whedon directing/writing.

Wait, this may seem a dumb question? But there vampires? Why does their age come into it? I can understand a bit more with SMG as she is playing a human character who just happens to have special powers.

Because they're vampires. They're ageless. They are not supposed to age. Their human counterparts have aged beyond the believability. Thats why Marsters put the (I think) 2012 timelimit on his character. You cant really be 50+ years old and playing a 20 something too easily.

Okay we've solved that problem then, either give them a good makeup job or they don't need to be in the movie like I said originally😛 And which one is 50 plus? Marster? Did think either was quite that old.

Marsters is 52.. Boreanaz is in his mid-forties.
As far as I can remember, as far as the reboot is concerned, it went the way Joss' Wonder Woman script went. The writer/s and the studio kept clashing on what they wanted out of the script. Everyone but Buffy was out and couldn't be used, so they would have had to go right back to Hemery and the movie version, possibly bringing Pike back. From what we could see, either the studio or the writer/s wanted the TV Buffy (her character-type, not the actually SMG-version) in the high school setting, forgetting that she evolved and grew into the character we saw on TV from a shallow valley girl.

Perhaps since stunts and martial arts is the issue, it'd be better to go down a more magical route and do a Willow movie. I could see that doing okay. Alyson is still notable enough at the moment from the American Pie film series and How I Met Your Mother. She's aged well and in my opinion could still play Willow, especially since Willow never really did hand to hand combat, it'd mostly just be special effects. You could have her off on a standalone adventure, much like her comic title, allowing it to be accessible enough for anyone but without it being a full blown reboot.
They were after all planning a Spike movie at one point right?

But yeah I can understand why age would be an issue in that respect. Sarah looks really good, but she's not in her physical prime anymore and she has two kids... just the reality of what time does to our bodies unfortunately. So I can't blame her. You could write in a reason for her to be slowed down and fight less I suppose, but would we want that? I think that'd just be kind of sad. 🙁

Willow would make a nice movie. I would like an overpowered dark willow movie where the good side has more control over her dark nature. But i wouldnt like buffy or xander on it, been mentioned yes but not be present in the movie.

Were they ever planning a Spike movie? I know he was supposed to be a part of the proposed Faith spin-off and then the Ripper spin-off, but I can't remember a Spike spin-off ever being a serious contender. It was always a ____ and Spike sort of deal.

Yes, at one point they were planning on a solo Spike movie, but that fell through as well.
I don't know if I want a Willow movie. I would love to see Alyson play Willow again, but a full length movie, I just don't see people rushing out to theatres to see it. I would rather see SMG play Buffy and no do her own stunts then not see her play Buffy again ever. So I'm fine with using stunt doubles.

Vampires do age, it just takes a really long time. And it's more that they become less human looking than aging like a human. So you could have JM and DB come back and play Spike and Angel again it just would have to take place hundreds of years into the future, and who wants to see that.

If they did a Willow spin-off I think it would have to be in TV form. To be fair a Buffy film would be a gamble at this stage too. If SMG/Whedon were involved I would be so there! Sadly there are a lot of idoits who would dismiss it out of hand.

I'm thinking more like Netflix. Cause where on TV would they air it? Again without Buffy I just don't see people outside of the hardcore fans really paying attention. I would love SMG and Joss to work together again, in anything! But if Joss can't get Sarah to come back then nothing will.

Which brings up an interesting question of would Josh do it without SMG? I'm not sure he would no matter how much control he was given. I think in the end it will get made, but with a completley director/writer and star sadly. Josh is way too busy right now in any event.

Hmm. Yea I don't think he would want to do without Sarah. I don't think he wants to do it at all, which is probably why it hasn't been done. He has said that if he had the right story to tell for Buffy, then he would consider it, but much like the way of the comics, there's really nothing left to tell with Buffy as the main character. And without Buffy I just don't see the general audience being interested. I personally don't want a remake, I'm happy with the show we got. After the new Avengers movie though Joss has said he's going to take a break for a while. But who knows how long that will be and if he will or won't come back to Buffy in some form or another.

Joss has said many times that he would dismiss the comics completely if he ever decided to do a movie.

Actually he said it once, in an offhand way, while surrounded by the cast members in an emotional reunion at Paleyfest.

He also said later that he never would have greenlit a canonical comics continuation if there were even the slightest chance of revisiting Buffy in TV or movie form. Which there isn't.

Although I still float the possibility of a Children In Need special.

Strange. I could have sworn I read it in some sort of interview. I definitely don't think I heard it reported from Paley fest at any road. *shrugs*

ACIN Special!? What an odd idea. Besides which I thought that was only a British thing😉

It would literally be the only way to get everyone on board for one more bit of filmed Buffy. A one-shot done for charity.

It is a British thing, but I doubt they'd say no to a new episode of Buffy.
