The most shocking thing about it to me is how Dahmer got away with doing what he did in an apartment building.
Most of the serial killers at the time were startlingly incompetent or inept, but got away with things because of pure luck of the draw.
The worst example is likely the Zodiac, who was very likely able to escape one incident because of a misidentification, but Bundy’s multiple escapes are also perfect examples.

I now see that incompetence (and luck of the draw) everywhere...even from the most brilliant minds (no amount of PhDs can impart basic common sense into people). It made me feel better until the implications sunk in, and now think we're doomed.
