I honestly can't say I'm in love with Edward. It's the constant references to him being like stone and cold. It gives me the willies a little bit. I like the guy, and I might hang out with him, but he sounds REALLY creepy to spend too much time touching.

Sweetscape -

I have tickets for the advance screening on thursday. I'm excited, actually. Despite the fact I know there's going to be like, 600 tweens lol.
It's always fun to see a bok you've read come to "life" on screen. I have read all four of the books - but I'm not sure if I'd recommend them. They're entertaining, but not at all original in my opinion. There are way better vampire books out there - before you read any vampire fiction read The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. She's whom everyone has stole from 🙂
And of course, Dracula (which I just finished the annotated edition)

Don't get mad, Twilighters 🙂 The books are redeemable, don't get me wrong. I liked Eclipse the best. My issue is that they're just not written very well. Lots of incorrect sentances and run-ons.

I'm just being nit-picky.

I love Jabob, though. He's great.

LOL you all make great points. But hey I say, kids should read more than they do - I guess Twilight is better than nothing 🙂
they do reference Robert Frost and Shakespeare...maybe it will spark their interest to read other, more challenging texts. Who knows.

Believe it or not, I read the books because I was taking a class on YA fiction, and I was intrigued by the popularity of the series. I wrote my final term paper on vampire YA fiction. ..So, I had an excuse for reading the series, yet I sadly admit I was strangely fascinated by them. I wasn't really sure why. I call it brain candy fiction. I think I finished all four books in like, a month....

*laughs* Well said, hun! (Except for I'd never hang out with him or be friends with him)

Will any of you go and see the film? I've not read any of the books but it look like an alright film. And anyone who as read the books should i read them?

synopsis of the film

Isabella Swan moves to gloomy Forks to live with her father. As she starts her junior year in high school she becomes fascinated by Edward Cullen who holds a dark secret which is only known by his family. Edward falls in love with Bella as well but knows the further they progress in their relationship the more he is putting Bella and those close to her at risk. Edward warns Bella that she should leave him but she refuses to listen and to understand why he is saying this. Bella learns his secret. He is a vampire, however she is not afraid of his blood-thirsty needs and the fact he could kill her at any moment. Bella is afraid of losing him, the love of her life. The thrill begins when a new vampire finds it a challenge to hunt Bella down for her irresistible blood. The game is on and James will not stop until she is killed.

I'm a Literature person (have an M.A. in British Lit, planning to pursue my PhD . . . about as literary as you can get), and while I haven't read these books, I've heard enough about them to make me absolutely not want to touch them ever.

1. The stigma against Fantasy literature is already bad enough without adding more mindless drivel--which, from what I've heard, is all this is. This seems to be the sort of book that critics EXPECT from a Fantasy writer (completely overlooking Tolkien or Dunsany or Orson Scott Card, just to name a few, of course) and will use to "prove" that Fantasy is a retarded, mind-rotting genre that has no place in the halls of serious literature.

2. The things I've heard about her "adaptations" of the vampire myths have sent me (and my fellow Fantasy-loving co-workers) into yelling rages. They don't have fangs? And they can go out in the sun? And they SPARKLE? Are you SERIOUS?! Who's going to take any classical vampire seriously after THAT?! Besides which, none of us wants to assign Dracula and have to listen to our students whine about how the vampires are "all wrong" because they're not like Stephanie Myer's (cause these kids won't even have read Anne Rice, which I would MUCH prefer to Stephanie Myer).

3. Her apparent lack of a strong female character (from all I've heard, Bella is ANYTHING but strong) and the misogynistic slant to her writing (again, I've only HEARD) go against everything I believe in.

So, no. I won't be reading the books or watching the movie. In fact, I'll be over here in the hole I dug in the backyard while the Harry Potter thing was going on. And if anyone in my literature class next semester tries to compare Edward to Dracula, I will throw an eraser at him/her.

I am as Engligh literature major in college, and Oh. My. God. You so just read my mind.

Rock on.
🙂
You have to escuse me, though.

Question: Are you interested in Buffy Studies at all? Have you ever submitted an article to Slayage or Watcher Junior? I'm working on an article on Postmodernim in the Buffyverse which I hope to submit 🙂

Okay so I totally just finished reading Twilight and I am utterably and completely enthralled. Oh how fickle I can be. I love love love Edward. Um, say what you will but I love him. I cannot wait to start reading New Moon. I am picking it up today so that I dont have to wait much longer. Jeez, waiting for my lunch is like watching paint dry. I know that some have had negative things to say about the book but when I finally got to the baseball game I was totally involved. I loved the way the suspense was written and needless to say I am hooked. Oh man, this is so gonna be Harry Potter all over again for me.

I know, right? They're disturbingly addicting. Although, I'm totally team Jacob. lol

Oh dear god, I absolutely loathed these books. *shudders* So much anti-feminism and bad messages to send to young readers.

EDIT: Oh! And absolutely no plot whatsoever until the end of the book. *rolls eyes* It's mostly "I love you" "No, I love you MORE", "No, I love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!" "*squee!*"

Okay, I'm done.

Ohhh, this reminds me. I absolutely hate Bella. No joke I think she is one of the worst characters in all of literature. She's so pathetic and dopey and extremely selfish. She has absolutely no mind of her own. She abandons everyone to be with Edward - even her family.
I agree - not a good message for the tween set.
I'm still not convinced he doesn't posses the power of thrall...

Jacob karma! Me too! :)
I totally agree with SpikedBuffy.
If you enjoy a story that is neither life shattering or changing, but a nice read then try it. Some of you might be surprised!

Yay, English majors!

I am, actually. The last 3rd of my Master's thesis dealt with teaching literary criticism using Buffy. I was working on an article about Jonathan--back when I had time to think--that I planned on submitting to Slayage.

Only one day left until I get to see the movie. You can bet your ass I will be on here after to go on and on about how it was wonderful and I cannot wait for the next movie yada yada. Atleast that is my hope. I totally hate waiting.

I'm going at 12:03 a.m.! Our movie theater is having 3 midnight showing, and 12:01, 12:02 are all sold out. So, I had to take the 12:03 showing.

I'm so excited.

Now, If cafepress would just freaking deliver my twilight t-shirt, that would be dandy.

Grrr!

I was gonna go to the midnight showing tonight (I pre-ordered tickets and everything), but the friend I was going with just called me and said she can't go because she has a two big tests tomorrow. I really don't wanna go alone, so I'm stuck waiting until the weekend. Oh well.

Also, sweetescape, most reviews I've read from official film critics are bad, but fans of the book seem to be loving it. Apparently, it's very true to the story, which is good, aside from the fact that it also means Bella and Edward's relationship moves at a really quick pace. And, considering the fact that the movie doesn't have over a hundred pages of her obsessed thoughts about him before their relationship starts up, I'm sure it'll seem even faster onscreen.

Overall, I'm guessing it's going to be a very good adaptation, but a bad movie. The book wasn't exactly fine literature, either (as you can see from most of my posts in here...I know, I have a very complex, love/hate relationship with Twilight), so I can't imagine it getting rave reviews from snooty movie critics.

Well said, Crrazy Flakes. Couldn't agree more 🙂
I'm going to see the movie tonight (and dragging my poor boyfriend along lol)
I'll tell you what I think of if!

(I'd put this in a rep comment, but I accidentally pressed enter ><)

Ooh, be sure to tell us! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.

Also, poor boyfriend, ahaha! I'm surprised they don't put a sign up in front of it that says "You must have this much estrogen to see this movie."

I have been reading the reviews and it seems like that it is kind of mixed right now. I am hopefully going to go see it on Sunday. All I can say is that I hope it can live up to my expectations.

I saw it last night.
Here is my review:

I actually really enjoyed it. I thought they did a great job staying to the tone of the book.
The casting was great I thought....they're all absolutely stunning...the vampires, I mean 🙂
And Jasper???? Man....he's a beautiful creature alright.

And Edward? I'm a self-professed Team Jacobite, but man....Rob was great. The actor owned that role, seriously. He rocked. He played Edward perfectly, did a great job with the whole tortured, socially enept creeper aspect of him..although, I'm not sure about his James Dean-esque American accent. 🙂

A bit dramatic, very cheesy and romantic, but what do you expect?? I might go see it again...lol

Also, there were a few things I didn't think they'd be able to pull off (like the sparking skin thing and the "honey colored" eyes...) but they actually pulled it off. I was surprised.

Taylor whats-his-face...who plays Jacob...he's a doll, really.
Can't wait for the next film!

How about you all? What did you think?

Ooh, I can't wait! I'm seeing it at midnight tonight in IMAX (how could I resist 2 hours of sexy Cullen boys on a huge screen?). I'll give you all my review as soon as I get back.

Oh my Edward! I loved it. Absolutely loved it. Sure, it was very cheesy, but that made it great. I liked the humor they put into it.

Wow...Imax?! That would be so cool...

Sorry, though. I can't agree with you on the hotness of Edward. He's just such a creeper...lol

Jasper though...
*sighs
wish I coudl get my hands on him...
