Anti-feminist message: Bella is a awful role model for girls. She has no indentity outside of how Edward defines her. She is willing to abandon her family and her friends to be with Edward. She doesn't care about anything but her own happiness. Don't have time to elaborate on this but think about it.
Ok, I got to agree with you there to tel you the truth. I love the books, but sometimes her choices really piss me off. However, it's kinda like a "meant to be" think, and she's always worrying about what her friends and family are going to think before she does something irrational. Besides, she's a 17 year old girl, whatta you expect? She's not Buffy.
Bad writing: Try all her run-on sentances. Her contridictions. Her repeating herself. The biggest word she uses is possibly "Volturi". Which isn't even a real word. She made it up 🙂
1. I'm feeling really stupid, but could you refresh my brain as to what a run-on sentence is? (Sorry, I'll slap myself in a little bit and remember it)
2. Does a book have to have big words to be good writing. and *cough*irrevocably*cough*
It's really important to understand the message that these books are projecting. If you can read these books, enjoy them and also see their flaws, then you're fine. That's all I'm asking 🙂
Well, I guess I see what you're saying. And actually, to be truthful, I can't stand the way she blindly follows Edward, and the way she can't function without him, but it's kind of like Buffy and Angel's relationship in a way. They were just meant to be. No matter what, they will always love eachother.
The Ferg, I'll admit that I have not read the first book in its entirety...but I picked it up out of curiosity in my friend's house because her grandma was reading it, and she said since I was a Buffy fan I may enjoy it. I still picked it up, even after explaining that vampires had absolutely nothing to do with why I liked BTVS. I thought the few pages I read were horrendous. Her writing is AWFUL. I'm the type of person who can't get emotionally invested in a novel or care what's going to happen if the writing isn't good, so I can't handle that crap. Mostly I was in shock that ANYONE actually liked the books! I don't think it's much of a minority bandwagon either...you don't meet many non-teens who enjoy the book, and even teens with evolved taste can see how bad they are. I'm not trying to bash anyone here who DOES read them, to each their own...
Sorry, but you can't judge until you read the whole thing. Sorrys, it's a rule of life (at least for me)
I'm a teen and I actually do like it. Seriously, I have no idea why. I'm actually one of those guys with "evolved tastes" (as you would say). I usually don't go with the stuff everyone reads/listens to/watches. Not because I refuse to, but it's just not good stuff. I know, I said this before, but there's just something about it. I don't know what, that drags me in. Something that makes me read 100-200 pages a night.
Oh, and I still don't get why you say she has bad writing. Not many professional reviewers have said anything bad about her writing, and if run-on sentences are what I think they are, J.K. Rowling does the same thing. (Don't hold me to that)
