She spends a lot of time worrying about her Dad, her Mom and the Cullen family.

Uh...say what? Not enough though, to actually put them before her sex drive though right? Too bad for them.

Well, I guess getting it on with her boyfriend should have been a more important priority for Bella, and rightly so.

*shakes head

Jesus christ.

Actually, Bella didn't want to get married. She was very anti-marriage throughout the books. She felt that you had to be much older and wiser to be married. The reason that she agreed to marry Edward, for the most basic reason is that she thought it was the right thing to do. She wanted Edward to be happy. She wanted Alice to be happy. She wanted her Dad to be able to walk her down the aisle. All of those reasons that are told to Edward in the meadow at the end of Eclipse. So her 'selfishness' isn't really that evident, is it? In fact, she's extremely unselfish. She spends a lot of time worrying about her Dad, her Mom and the Cullen family.

Of course, she did agree for one other reason too, which is what I think bothers people. That Edward would not have any type of sexual relationship with her without being married. Oh gosh, what a bad example to set for teenagers. You shouldn't jump immediately into a sexual relationship.

I get where you're coming from, but to the point where she herself doesn't even want to be happy? She's letting everyone pull her along and do whatever they wish, and it's really irritating. For once, she should just stand up for herself or do something that's for herself. The author's putting her own religion into the books, which I think should be kept separate from novels. And I definitely don't think that you should jump into a sexual relationship right away. But really, Edward and Bella have no connection. If I'd just watched the movie, I would've wondered how they "fell in love" by just looking at each other.

Wait, what does ROFLMAO mean? I'm not hip with the kiddies internet lingo these days lol
You don't have to read an entire book to be able to detect bad writing. The reviewers probably didn't say anything because they know the age range the book is intended for. Come on now, if you've actually read high-end literature you'd be able to see how amateurish Meyers' writing is. And J.K. Rowling isn't a very good writing either...her "masterful prose" is not why her books are successful. She's a good storyteller, but she's not a good writer.

Well said! :)
I really didn't mind the writing.
Honestly, I'm a bit confused as to which part of it is bad.

Because I have to say, I kinda of HAVE to have lots of imagery to read a book. I have to be able to see it in my head. I'm much more of a visual person than maybe I should be.
On the other hand, too much imagery and my brain gets all confuddled in the details and I end up skipping down paragraphs and missing parts.

But, this flowed. I feel like I could find my way around the town. I think I even have a better image of it than Sunnydale.
I couldn't relate to EVERYTHING Bella thought or did, but enough that the few times we had to be in Jacob's head I was annoyed.

I will admit that there may have been a gratuitous use of the word "chagrin", but that's about all that really popped out at me.

I don't really think she's a BAD role model for children. But, I like to stand FIRMLY in the camp of Harry Potter won't turn children to the occult and teens are smart enough to realize it's fiction. And, on the off change a young girl finds herself madly in love with a vampire and her pal is a werewolf....then we can revisit the bad role model part.
Besides, from the get go it was made clear she was more mature than she should be. Not that it would sway teens from being all "forever" and "swoony" over their boyfriends...but what would? It also seems to be hinted at through the books that this was almost fated. Of course, all dating teens I know seem to think their love is fated too.

I was just about to throw the Harry Potter/Occult card. :)
I've read the books, Ferg. They made me incredibly sick with disgust. And yes, I did watch season two and three of Buffy, and when you're young, maybe yes, the fairytale appeal is there, but as I grew older I stopped being a Bangel shipper because of the sickening tone to it. They put their relationship above all else, and this is exactly what Bella and Edward are doing. Yes, but you know what? She says that she's in love with him way before she even knows all that much about him. And that's exactly the problem. She spends 380 pages on their "love". And why do they like each other? Bella because he's hot and fabulous, and Edward because of her smell and because he can't read her mind. Seriously?
Ok... It DID take them a WHILE to get together. Yeah, she recognized that for some odd reason, she loved him, but she really didn't understand this whole ordeal until later, and he realized he couldn't live without her. He wanted to drink her blood really bad, but he couldn't do that, and he still wanted to be around her. He's in love with her so much that he's willing to fight the urge to eat her right there.

It's anti-feminist for her to let him control every aspect of her life. And all of the fainting and screeching doesn't help to the "feminist" aspect. Girls nowadays needs to have strong girl role models, and Bella's a huge step backwards. I'll give the movie points for making her a tad bit more feminist then in the books, but it's not by much. Once again, yes, I did read all four books. Oh, so because her boyfriend said so? What kind of guy is that? I'm not trying to get mad at you here or anything, it's just that the absurdity of these really alarms and disgusts me. And sorry, Edward, but we're living in the 21st century, not the 1800's. I dont know about the majority of people nowadays, but where I come from, people most definitely do not get married at age 17 two weeks out of high school.
Like Dlou444 said. Harry Potter is about the magic, and some people think that children will join the occult because of it. Now, we all know that they don't give kids the credit they deserve. They can realize that it's fiction. And the same thing goes for Twilight. Ask youself this: Why would someone want to be like Bella? Like you said, she's really a loser. I would understand people saying, "I wish I had a boyfriend like that", but have you heard anyone say, "Bella's so cool! I wanna be just like her!" No. Because people don't model themselves off her. Unlike Buffy, Bella isn't meant to be a role model. Sure, she doesn't make the best choices, but she a 17 year old in love. What's the most you could expect. I personally like that they will always be together, no matter what. And yes, in fact, she does care about her famiy. Every single time she's about to make a decision, she thinks, "Ok, what would Charlie would do if I did this." Of course, she usually does it anyway because she's a teenager, but her father and mother are always on her mind, not matter what.

And actually, the one thing I don't like about Twilight is Bella's unrelenting infatuation for Edward. As much as I like these books, it is quite annoying how Bella follows Edward so blindly, and is willing to forgive him right off the bat, after he leaves her. I also find it funny that no one has mentioned Jacob. Is it because Jacob/Bella would be fine together? That's the whole ordeal in the third book. Her and Edward's love is eternal, but she does realize that Jacob would be better for her.

Agreed. I was totally team Jake until the third book when it became a moot point when he imprinted on Reneseme.
Dlou, my problem with the writing wasn't an excessive use of imagery, it was just that I found her vocabulary less than stellar and that it was clunky and not seamless like good writing should be.

^^ That's my point though, PP. Usually when things are really clunking, my brain tunes them out. Instead, I was able to suck myself in and actually BE there. My brain doesn't suck into just any story. It has to be pretty seemless. And I have to give the woman credit for being sneaky with her chapters so you had to keep reading when you got to the end of one.
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying my brain usually picks up on things that are REALLY bad and clunky writing and the book ends up on the shelf without my even wanting it to. It may have still be clunky, but not enough to set off the alarm bells, in fact, I couldn't put it down.
As for the "odd words" I actually thought they fit. Especially when trying to explain the thoughts in her head in a logical way.

I do kinda see what the "Bella Relationship is baseless" are saying, but I think they've missed a key part that the people that are for Twilight picked up. Or, maybe the better way to put it is that some people's lives make the events surrounding the "love" make more sense than others.
I didn't see Bella saying, "Oh, I love you" with no question. She was certainly infatuated at first. But, I believe I would be too, in that situation. 1.) There are vampires 2.) a whole pack of them 3.) they live with people 4.) one of them is infatuated with HER. That would be enough to suck me in pretty quickly. Curiosity killed the cat and all.
On top of it, this one seems to be teetering between wanting to eat you and wanting to save you from any and all damage like you're a precious crystal.
Yes, she does dwell on him being gorgeous, but I do that with my kids and they were trying to hit HOME that vampires are pretty.
For him being so gorgeously perfect, however, I do find it funny how MAD she gets at him. She's not really ever really that concerned that her anger will make him leave. Which I think makes the relationship slightly more stable. Many teens I've known in infatuation will not utter a word for fear that this fabulous person will leave them.
Plus, they were a lot a like. He was very smart, well spoken, not drawn up in the usual teenage drivel that Bella seemed to run away from too.
Also, by the point where she was gonna have to leave her family, she didn't really have a great choice in the matter. It was either die or leave them. She didn't know this would be the final verdict when she first started falling for Edward. She found it out later. By the time she actually left them, there wasn't a lot of choices left to her and she even found a way to work with THAT...in a sense.

Debates are fun, and we are all actually staying very civil and having an adult conversation. 🙂 Which rarely ever happens!

I do have a question. Someone stated above that the writer put her religious beliefs into the books. I'm trying to think, but the only topic that ever comes up that could deal with relegion is when Edward talks about an afterlife for him and how he thinks that he could never get into heaven. That's all I can think of.

So, what religious beliefs are you talking about? Have I missed something? Not having sex before marriage I guess could be considered a religous belief, but I'd say that mainly it's just a moral belief. I mean, that's not really so religious that it outrages people right?

And Carlisle's faith is talked about in NEw Moon. Also, Edward is abstinent because of religion too. But like you said, it's not a big deal at all...

We might have people of that religious belief on this board and I don't want to offend them or anything...

Yes, she is a mormon.

I am not meaning to offend religious people. I myself am a very religious, Christian person. But the idea of sex before marriage was never really preached to me by my church. Sure by my parents, but that was because they wanted me to make an informed decision and make sure I was ready. That's why I said that one was more closely related to a persons set of morals and what they think about that topic.

Hmm, yes, but it is a bit different. I mean, we don't have to respect Twilight at all. Other people's religions, we might not like, but we -it's not really respect, but it's more a matter of them taking it into more offense. That didn't come out the way it's going through my head, but I hope the point was clear...

Haha, okay then. 🙂 They're best explained by Beth's sister, as they were raised in that religion but no longer are, so I think that it's really best explained by her. I'm going to put the links here. However, if you are easily offended or are in any way Mormon and won't like them, don't read them. Here they are (in order):

stoney321: LDS Sparkledammerung IS HERE!
stoney321: MORE TWILIGHT - Don't act like you don't need a laugh today.
stoney321: LDS Sparkledammerung Part 3: Return of the Sparkle!
stoney321: Final Chapter in the LDS Sparkledammerung Series...

Again, if you're Mormon or easily offended, please don't read them and then yell at me.

Okay, I read them, and I will have to agree that it has some humor in it. I don't know anything about the Mormon relgion, so that was interesting.

I know some people who are ready for marriage at 17. If they're ready, there's nothing wrong with it, imo. Heck, I got married at 19. 😉 Not saying Bella was ready for it though. 😛

It wouldn't really work in today's society. What're you going to do getting married at the age of 17? Ditch college once you get pregnant? Goodness sakes. Yes, there's protection and blah blah blah, but many people don't have the maturity level for that. *hugglesyou* That's 'cause you're made of pure awesomeness. 😉 I definitely don't think that Bella was ready for marriage.

I don't think Bella was ready for marriage either. I'm just saying that there are some people who are, but they're few and far between. ;)
Anyone who says people are ready for marriage at 17 either have never been a kid or have REALLY forgotten what it's like to be one...

Everyone is an individual and while I agree that people can't speak for others, I believe people can be ready that young.
Leaked "partial draft"

Hey, do you all know about the leaked draft for Midnight Sun? Apparently, some dumb kid hacked into Stephanie Meyers computer and posted the draft of the 5th book online. So, in response to this, she's so upset that she isn't going to finish or publish the last book. Midnight Sun is apparently Twilight from Edwards point of view.

She says on her website, "This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control."

So my question is, fan or not,: Do you guys respect her decision to not publish the book because of this? Or do you think it's wrong for her to be "punishing" her fans in regard to this?

I'm just curious. Just found out about, found it interesting, and wonder what you all think.

You can read her full statement here: StephenieMeyer.com | Twilight Series | Midnight Sun
