I'm not so sure studios would not be hip to the idea...Star Trek got movies after a lay off in part due to the success of Star Wars, Battle star Galactica, and Buck Rodgers among a slew full of others revitalizing the topic. (as well as legions of fans...devout and closet.)

Buffy was a stand alone on TV for her medium for awhile a lot like star trek, but now vampires are slowly picking up speed again all the various books,Twilight selling good even though critics say the movie sucks, this True Blood getting high marks, Supernatural doing well among viewer review. The jandra has always been there but it seems to be picking up speed lattely.

There is a part of Hollywood not just content to ride the wave of the next big thing with everyone else, but rather make the splash that makes the wave. I think considering where the fad/theme currently is...as well as where I think it's going, it would do well and be worth a consideration by production companies in either of those two instances.

Prepare for the vampire renaissance 🙂

Umm, I disagree. I see Twilight as closing the doors on the vampire run, not starting it.

We've had TV shows, books, movies ALL based on the Vampire.
Making a Vampire movie isn't bucking the trend its adding to it.

The whole genre needs some time off, I can understand that.

Also, Star Trek was rehashed because Star Wars was big, granted, but it was pretty much the only thing that could be a successful franchise with a growing legion of fans that the studios had in their possession.
Now there are SO many things for them to choose from that it won't happen.

I am that sure that a Buffy movie will not be made with the same cast that I will leave the board permanently if it is ever made...win win for you guys isn't 😛

What other show has had the reception that Buffy did on TV? What are the so many of franchises concerning vampires for the studios to chose from? Not to mention buffy has a very good established track record, I just can't say it won't happen.
No, I like having you around to KICK

Just kidding, I do like having you around, your not half as horrible as you think you are...or think we think you are. I actually like you. Sometimes you say stuff that makes me think WTF? but when I look at what I say myself from time to time in retrospect, I say the very same thing.

back to the topic I guess...

I don't think Twilight is closing the door, its kinda like the Harry Potter phenomenon all over again with tweens and adults alike getting their fang on.

Upon reviewing what you've said though, from Blade to resident evil I guess the theme has been in decent stride for awhile. I don't see twilight as a peak though...I think its just the newest contribution for the upward jaunt from this plateau we've been on.

Buffy is still getting new fans, still exists in limited medium, it was an is a good thing, she's kind of a media Icon. Icons get movies, from supermario brothers to comic book characters. (its too bad marvel doesn't publish Buffy comics, we would have had 3 movies by now 🙂 )

If dukes of hazzard can get a movie deal anything is possible. Don't go an honor your statement if your wrong (although you do have original cast loophole for legal wiggle room.) I consider you a 'net buddy' and an often times interesting other look at topics, Buffy and otherwise.

I'd be up for a Buffy movie if it was a re-do of the original, and based on Joss's script with him in creative control this time. I don't know that 31-year-old SMG could pull of playing a 16-year-old at this point, though, and it wouldn't seem right to have anyone else in the role. She really made it her own.

Another possibility would be to do a film version of the season 8 comics, but that just doesn't seem likely, even if all the actors could be brought on board. (Would SMG do a love scene with a girl? Ask Selma Blair.)

The best possibility might be filling in what happened between "Chosen" and "The Long Way Home." Lots of cool opportunities there. That might, in fact, be why Joss put so much time between the end of s7 and the beginning of s8... to leave room for a feature film if the opportunity ever arose.

Yeah, cause I have bruises where you have kicked me OR I am so wily that I out wit your foot😛

Trust me, there are people on this board that actually loathe me, but for the most part I know I am liked because I bring some flavour🙂

Anyway, back on topical goodness.

Add to the list the 'I am Legend' and 'Underworld' films and the Moonlight - which though a failure kinda proves my point.

I don't think Twilight is the last, I think its one of the last in the dwindling market. I don't see any studio hedging a bet on a TV show to movie thing based on Vampires and the Supernatural.

As for attracting new fans well its lost as well and to be quite honest, the amount of new fans is a simple trickle not a great whooshing wave of them.

I don't see a film being made in the next 10 years and then that will discount most of the cast in 10 years time.

If dukes of hazzard can get a movie deal anything is possible. Don't go an honor your statement if your wrong (although you do have original cast loophole for legal wiggle room.) I consider you a 'net buddy' and an often times interesting other look at topics, Buffy and otherwise.

Dukes is a different thing. It was part of the remake a 70's/80's classic period in Hollywood, and arguably it was one of the last ones.

It was a successful show PLUS it had some rather big names attached (SMG, god love her is not in the same league as Stiller or even Wilson dollar potential wise).

Ohhh and yeah, I learned from the best (W&H) always have a loophole🙂 )

I don't think Buffy needs big stars for a draw like Dukes chose to do. Bo and Luke had been out of circulation for a little while, and short of nostalgia (and I could be wrong here) I don't think Dukes of Hazard has the same following as Buffy or could attract even half the draw without a modern well known actor to draw in the new folks and CHANGE the movie to more of a comedy than the old action show it use to be.

You do say something interesting though, You say new fans are a trickle while the series has lost some of its prior fanbase. What do you think caused this loss, a lack of interest in the product (as in the show) or simple inactivity and limited exposure to new things Buffy? How sever do you think the loss when it comes to ginning up new intrest?

Buffy might have had dwindeling numbers viewer wise toward the end of the TV series (I'm honestly not sure, as I have not researched it.) but the show was not cancelled it was abandoned by the cast and writers, much to the woe of some...and distance can make the heart grow fonder especially when your afforded the opportunity see if the grass has gotten greener since you left.... that damnable curiosity gets many a cat. In short just because Buffy has lost its casual fans who don't eat breathe and sleep Buffy does not mean they would not want to see the movie.

StarWars did not have huge named actors in the original trilogy, for that matter the new saga did not have huge names either. The story and roles were more than enough to generate intrest...in the end I believe people go to the movies for a story more so than the actors (though that certainly does play a part, just not a huge part for me personally....a lesson taught to me long ago by Mr. Lucas)

Not having an actor or actress demanding huge sums of money would actually work in favor of the production studio. Geller knows she's no Stiller as well....and you want to know what else...(not that i can prove it)

I think Sarah is afraid to go back to Buffy because she realizes the role is more famous than she as an actress is. Thats the power of a good character.

Going back to starwars I had no idea who the fellow playing Anakin was; it did not matter the dude would be Darth Vadder and thats a story worth telling. the same thing about Boba Fett, the whole star wars universe. I feel the same about Buffy.

The way (bad) scary movies are poped out like whack a moles during the hallowheen season ever year, i don't think its a streatch for the production companies to entertain the notion of a Buffy movie. What is keeping this from getting done is Joss and the cast, not fear of a flop.

Other factors may play a hand in it not seeing the light of day, Actors reluctance etc. but I don't belive it would be for lack of intrest or fear of not making money. We'll just have to agree to disagree on that, my friend.

I think the fan base for BTVS is deceptive, because you're not just talking about the people who watched it on TV, on the WB, UPN, or later when it went into syndication. I sometimes wonder how many people discovered it on DVD. Also the Buffy name is known to people who haven't even seen the series. When articles pop up in the mainstream media concerning vampires the name Buffy is certain to make an appearance. It still pops up in other media. I saw it recently on True Blood.

I know here at BB there have been many 1000 posts members who have moved on to other stuff. That doesn't mean they forgot who Buffy the Vampire Slayer is. If a Buffy movie were to appear in their neighborhood theatre, they'd still have to check it out.

The name Buffy is at least as well-known (I would say better) than say a name like Iron Man was when they first decided to make a movie of it.

very good points, and said much better than my mixed metaphors. Also I never really entertained the notion of how many the DVD's had brought in. Excellent catch. I see the DVD's are going for 20 dollars now, I'd bet we get afew more with low cost :)

SUCH good points!
Speaking of comics-based movies, it should be noted also that the Buffy Season 8 comic sells crazy numbers for a non-traditional-superhero book. For its whole run it has consistently been the best-selling comic in America not published by Marvel or DC. In August, issue #17 was the 13th top-selling comic... one place ahead of "Amazing Spider-Man". "Iron Man", by comparison, came in at #30.

So yeah... there's still one hell of a lot of interest in Buffy out there.

wow outselling Spiderman! Somewhere a Toby is wishing he was a Nick. :) Or not. Good find just the same. I think you answered adders question about the comics being a success!

Gellar wouldnt be playing 16 yr.old Buffy she would be playing 26/27 yr old Buffy. But Joss has said he would make S8 comic non canon if he had to. It all depends on where Joss wants to start the film off of. If it starts from where Chosen left off then S8 would be axed out of continuity or he could do it after S8 and just have references/flashbacks to events that happened during it.

To comment on my age comment. It is true that if they left time between S7 and the movie age would actually make sense. David would be fine, he is more in shape in Bones then he ever was on Angel. (Bones is amazing by the way lol). But even with make up, James looks very old. I am not ragging on him, but from S6 he looked in his twenties and S7 looked like his forties. In the new DragonBall Z movie he has head to toe make-up, so I think that would be tricky. NB looked aged as well and so did AH, but not being Vampires, it doesn't really matter.

Buffy could be done so much better with new technology. Watching television alone special effects are amazing. Terminator, Supernatural, the short lived Bionic Woman, all had amazing effects and fight scenes. For a Buffy movie they would have to use such amazing effects, excellent fight scenes, upping the notch to modern cinema. Even though Buffy fans don't care, for the movie to be successful this would have to happen. The script would have to be an amazing stand alone story, for non Buffy fans, as well as satisfying the apitites of us die-hard lovers of the characters. So for the movie to be a success in my opinion this would have to happen:

Breath-taking special effects
Believable cutting-edge monster make-up
Impressive fight choreography
An Epic story plot
The characters would have to have their loved personalities shine through an captivate the people who don't know them yet
The characters would have to stay true to who they were to the show (no drastic personality differences do to "situations that occurred from when we last saw them")
It would have to incorporate intense action, suspense, a compelling story line as well as the drama and character based uniqueness of BUffy. We need it to be good for everyone, men, women, old, young, Buffy fans and none Buffy fans.
It would have to be funny, using allot of modern pop culture references
It would have to do all of this without losing it's Buffiness. The witty dialogue, the interesting characters, and the qwuarkiness would all have to still be there.

I think it can be done. It would have to happen soon again because of age. Although it can't be rushed. But I don't think the time between the TV series and the movie really matters. They are making a Dark Shadows movie, a Dragonball Z movie, they just made the X-Files movie, Star Trek, etc.

I hope it happens...probably won't. But we can dream!

Where did he say that?

That would suck. It would be as much a cop-out as saying, "oh...season 6 never happened. Sorry you wasted all that time watching."

He made it in an interview after Paleyfest. It kind of an off the cuff comment made in reply to a question that kind of asked what he'd be willing to do work with the actors again, and how it might apply to Season 8. As I recall SMG was looking over his shoulder.

I don't think we really know what exactly he meant by it. Maybe nothing. Maybe he was thinking something like how the X Men series goes off canon points, but remains true to the canon foundations. Maybe he really would thrown the whole of Season 8 out the window (which is what I believe he said). There are also quotes of Whedon proclaiming how important canon is to him, and how Season 8 is, so who really knows which quote takes precedent.

Ok i don't read the comics that much and i'm not huge on them and i might get a lot of crap on this but
can someone please tell me the difference between
Canon and non-canon

Canon is the story of what is "really" happening to Buffy and the others. All canon is supposed to be consistent with all other canon.

Non-canon is just stories told about the same characters which can be disregarded in the grand scheme of things.

I love these season 8 comics, their canonicity is very important to me, and it would kill me to see them just casually thrown under the bus. I looked up his comments at Paleyfest. He said if he had to throw out season 8 in order to make a new film with the TV cast, he "wouldn't lose a lot of sleep" over it.

If that's the case, I have to say I hope such a movie does not get made.

I don't think Twilight's success has any bearing on how successful a Buffy film would be. Not only do I not believe a Buffy film would be good, I don't think fans of Twilight would go see it just because it has some vaguely similar subject matter.

I'm thinking there are a few fans of both shows on this very forum that would say Huh? to the latter part of your statement. Not every sci fi fan is a star wars fan...I get that not all twilight fans might did Buffy, but I'm sure some would.
