Twilight's Success=Buffy Feature Film?

The jist of it is the following - From an Interview with Anthony Stewart Head.

Anthony also spoke about the possibility in starring in a spin-off of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' focusing entirely on his character, librarian Rupert Giles.

He added to BANG Showbiz: "It's long been rumoured. I talked to the writer Joss Whedon the other day because there were rumours on the internet there must be a 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' movie coming out after 'Twilight', but there isn't.

"But he said he would still like to do this thing with me so it may or may not happen. I would do anything to work with Joss again, he is a really lovely guy and a great creative mind."

Doesn't sound hopeful at all.

In which case, I hope there is no movie.

I'm sure the people at Dark Horse were overjoyed to hear that statement.

Selling the comic based on the fact that it's canon, and then throwing that out, is called "bait and switch." It's dishonest and obnoxious. It makes it sound like the comics are just a cash-in or a publicity stunt for him... which is obviously not the case, given the exceptional work and care he's put into the project so far.

But, he didn't actually say he *would* throw out the comics... just that he *might* if he couldn't make the movie compatible with them.

The ideal choice would be to do a movie filling in the year-and-a-half gap between the end of the TV show and the start of the comics. There's a *lot* of as-yet-untold story in there.
 
Comics and movies tell stories differently...it makes sense that he'd establish new canon...especially since season 8 of Buffy has been the biggest embarassment of his career so far...
 
Yeah, I'd rather see a new canon than a movie with Giant Dawn, talking trees, and unicorns. *shrug* Although there's a lot about season 8 that I love.

I'm not too sure there would be a Buffy movie JUST because of Twilight's success. First of all, Twilight's main characters are teenagers. Yes, I know, when Buffy was beginning it was about teenagers, but if they were to do a movie with the original cast, it would have to be about their adult life since most of the cast are in their thirties.
 
Well, IF Joss decided to make a movie with his original cast, or at least as many of them as would be willing to come back and aren't previously committed, he wouldn't really have to dump the Season 8 canon. As has been pointed out by more than one member here, there's at least a year between "Chosen" and the beginning of Season 8, which leaves all sorts of time for whatever storyline might be worked out. If nothing else, the reaction of everyone to what they had just survived, and the realization of just how they had literally changed the world by creating an army of Slayers would be enough to provide the subject of at least one movie, maybe more.

Chances are if they made a Buffy movie it wouldn't feature or be about anything I really want to see, so I would end up not liking it a whole lot. Plus as it's already be discussed, SMG probably wouldn't do it and if I couldn't see EVERYONE (this really includes Spike and Anya) I wouldn't want it to be.

Maybe you should make a distinction between "opinions" and "facts."

A bit of respect for the opinions and tastes of others would be nice, whether you agree with them or not.

I never stated anything I said as fact. When I express my dislike of the comics, I'm obviously speaking from my own perspective and taste. I didn't disrespect you...I merely said that to me, out-selling Spider-Man means zilch...and popularity does not equal quality.

Have to agree there. Actually, being No. 1 is probably a good indication that whatever you are doing absolutely sucks. Britney, Titanic, Backstreet, Coldplay. Need I go on?
Actually since the hype about Twilight, I have wondered if its success would at all impact the possibility of more upcoming Buffyverse projects. It's showing companies that right now vampires are marketable, and it's generating a lot of interest too for non-twilight series' I think (I've heard a lot of "Twilight is not nearly as good as [insert vampire book/show here]"). It's thrown genres like Buffy into the mainstream again, for the time being anyway.

I went to the book store a couple weeks ago, and no word of a lie the ENTIRE teen section (aside from say 6 series on the shelf) is full of vampire-related stories. Even the regular fiction section is starting to see more and more vampire volumes on the shelves.

So although I'm not sure if they would go for a full-length picture (I wish they would!), the thought of maybe another BTVS Game has crossed my mind. There's one being released for Nintendo DS I think in the UK (can't get it here) and I think that a Buffy game for Wii would be an excellent idea (you could have a stake in your hand!! How cool is that?). I could see Twilight's success upping the demand for btvs oriented stuff, it's just how far they would be willing to go that is what I'm wondering about.

That's the thing... it's a fad. It's not going to last. Even if they started work on a Buffy movie right now (and there's a LONG way to go before they could even get to that point), the trend would already have played itself out by the time the movie hit theaters.

I haven't heard Whedon's feelings on the matter, but I really think he values the Buffy franchise too much to use it as a way to jump on somebody else's trendy bandwagon. I think he'll do a Buffy movie if and when he has the means and the opportunity to do it the way he wants. He's not about to make the same mistakes he made with the first movie.

Along with the ongoing season 8 comics, more Buffy-related games would indeed be the best way to continue the franchise right now. That could get done quickly and inexpensively enough to take advantage of the current Sexy Vampire trend.
 
Okay so I have some thoughts about all of this. Bottom line for me is I would love a Buffy movie. Of course I would love it if the original actors were involved but the reality is perhaps not everyone could do this. Really though, what has been going on with most of the actors from the original series. I know some have found homes elsewhere but holistically not a whole lot of them are doing much so I would have to think that they would jump at the chance to be involved in a movie.
Okay, so I know what I would like the movie to be about but I would be okay with it regardless because it would be BUFFY. C'mon people, we dont spend a good part of our existence on this site with the hope that in some fashion our show will live on. There has to be a light at the end of the tunnel. I saw Twilight and loved it and if that means it has opened the door for a Buffy movie then I say hell yeah and I would see it twenty times in the theatre cause I am retarded like that whether I truly liked it or not. I might bitch about it later but that is how much I love Buffy.
 
The movie is terrible (Twilight, I mean), the most boring movie I've ever seen. All they do is look at each other and breath heavily...I was so bored I wanted to ask for my money back. 😉

When I came home from the movies, I put an episode of Buffy, and mummbled to myself "now that's how it is done!!!!!!!!"

I hope Joss is planning for a buffy movie, I always tought there should have been a movie. Can't wait.... weeeeeeee...
