So, i want to start a thread where people can come and give there interpretation of another nation......but nicely.
The if someone from that nation is about they can defend it, express how this notion is wrong.
For instance, France.
Its often said in England that the French are unwashed and smelly, unintelligent people who are constantly having sex(which i dont understand cause honestly, if you are unwashed and smelly, who the heck is gonna want you) We are also told they are arrogant and ignorant as a nation.

Now these arent my opinions, these are ones constantly presented to me.

So, would anyone like to defend the French who is French....or do you have preconceived notions/imposed opinions of another nation that you would like answering🙂
 
My "mum" had a french aupair and she WAS smelly, but we wont go into that.
But having gone out there they do appear friendy and jolly, plus the food is good.

for the fact tv shows us like that... well were not.... theres a minority but not the majority.... ah... but no excuse for ant and dec LOL 😀 hahaha

See, and MK remember i love you hun, but you defend Geordies about the stereotype of being 'Slags, alcoholics and thick'....yet you constantly tell us about how you are going out drinking and that you drink alot and in the thick part, you wrote 'think'

Now i don't think you are thick or that you are a Slaggy Alcoholic but imagine someone who doesnt know you, what would there opinion off these comments be, and thats the point of this thread, change peoples opinions..if possible🙂
 
i thats true like.... coz im passioate.... got to carryed away like when i typed it.... 🙂 im 20 years old man... its expected of a 20yr old to enjoy a drink now and then LOL 🙂 ( not to mention my alcohol thread..... 🙂 )
but ha nothing to prove the slag part 🙂 ( looks shifty.....) LOL haha you know im kidding right..... 🙂

Yeah... gosh I don't know how many time I heard that.. online ever since I started going in English forums/chats... then when I was in the US last summer and in here... you are right it seems to me that EVERYONE think that of French ppl in general... but as far as I'm concerned I don't care because if they don't realize this is a general conception and that everybody's different... then they dont seem to think too much and I'm not gonna waste my time talking to them...
ppl ask me is it true like I could tell them... HELLO! Am I not one example... as far as I know... I DO shave and never been told I smelt bad (actually this one drunk girl told me I smelt very good once... hehe.. well that was unexpected a comment haha) ... ppl are like considering me as the exception and asking me what real French are like (seems that I'm not a "real" French... hehe... guess it's cause of my rejection of my being French though)

UNWASHED: like everywhere... some ppl wash.. some ppl don't... I know I do... I know my friends back home do... I know there was this one girl in my class who didnt... and that girl we shared a tent with... OMG that was a NIGHTMARE! but i'm asking ya... is that a French thing or are their just some weird ppl with no respect for others in every country? hehe

SHAVED: Err.. for girls it's just sooo disgraceful... and I mean... unless you're a very extremist feminist... I guess most girls do shave... plus I'm living in South France by the Mediterranean sea... not shaving when you spent most of the summer on the beach.... haha... no way... girls are way too aware that they wont attract anyone when unshaved! :biggrin:

CONSTANTLY HAVING SEX: Err... I'm not too sure for this one... I know that we (french) say that about the Italian people...

ARROGANT: Not as much as Americans French ppl would say(I do not share that opinion so dont jump on me, lol) ... hehe... I don't think we are arrogant as a nation... again... some ppl are terribly arrogant... but like... I never seen anyone acting anything close to the French in the Monty Python (as hilarious as that is... hehe... and i gotta say even though I dont recognize it.. i love that bit of the Holy Grail)..
Now... I've been told that French ppl when addressed by foreigner trying to speak French just start speaking English as if annoyed because the foreign person was too slow or sth..... about that I have to say I personally may do that, not because I find the person trying to speak French lame... but I wanna make things easier for them... and since i'm fluent in English and LOVE speaking English, I'll just switch language or tell them I can speak English.

IGNORANT as nation: TRUE! GEEZ I can't but not agree! Though I have to say... most nations are ignorant as well... but yeah French ppl are ignorant... look at the number of ppl stuck in front of reality TV! lol

also you forgot LAZY! And that has to be the truest thing ever about French ppl! It's very simple... there is always some ppl on strike somewhere and for FREAK'S SAKE WITHOUT a good reason! Take a look at what's going on now... my dear friend XDruX have been deprived of going to Uni for the past weeks... now it can be cool and you can be like yay no uni on the short term... but when you got exams and stuff going on... that's kinda worrying... and i mean even without exams... on the long term... strike is getting on our nerves... now of course.. they wanna defend liberties and blah blah blah... the facts are that most ppl have no clue what they're in the streets for and it's all to keep injustified privileges in the end BECAUSE if your country has problems then compromises are the only way to go.... but go explain that to certain ppl! geez!

So like my brother said the other day... no country is really better than another (well that's gotta be for western countries at least)... they all have their sh!t and their advantages...

My turn

Americans are said to be (by most of my fellow French friends who despite all my arguing are mostly anti-americans) :
fat is what comes first , then ignorant as well (electing Bush), paranoid and excessive (trials for no good reason and the news being alarming about every single thing) way too much patriotic (i agree with that cause i witnessed it) and way too conservative (abortion, religion ruling their lives..)

WHAT?!? I thought this was a purely American scourge! I'm boggled!

My dad propagates that view of the French as well, but I've been to France and didn't witness anything that you can't seen on every city street in the world. It takes all kinds, I guess!

I thought German girls were the ones who didn't shave? And it's kinda true, actually (not about all or most of course, but about more German girls/women than any other girls/women I've met) 😉

I just love it when people say stuff about Swedes. Like, people here don't believe I'm a Swede just cause I dye my hair red (not that all Swedes are blonde to begin with though haha), lol. They believe I'm Norweigan, Danish, Dutch, whatever.. but not Swedish. Hm.
 
you know what annoys me? when people not from america bash on decisions made by american citizens. if you have so much of a problem with it, become a citizen and fix it!

i swear, its not like americans go around and are all like "oh that tony blair, he..." or "if only fidel castro..."

but sure...non-american citizens go on and on (and on) about bush, and before that, clinton, before that, bush sr, before that, reagan....

it's a pet peeve of mine...

Oh dear..looks like someone got out of bed on the wrong side of the planet this morning.

And some people have enough intelligence, (though it doesn't take much) to figure out that America has the power to do real damage to the earth, to mankind. If would be foolish for the rest of the world not to keep an eye on America and what it does. I mean, we don't want another nazi Germany on our hands.. I'm not saying America is heading that way, but shit like that affects the world, not just your country, you typical self-involved arrogant American.
 
Well, the point of the thread is to point out stereotypes and such of other countries, Princess, so in this particular situation, we Yankies don't really have much to say as far as getting angry with it.

And I'll agree. America's fat, religion-obsessed, paranoid, and full of itself. I know, and can say that, because I witness it everyday with the people I'm around. And I'm not bashing my country or anything, but it's true. Any American knows it, too.

There's that stereotype that all Italians do all day is smoke and drink and curse. Anyone want to rebut?

Yep I gotta agree with Fiver.... if everyone talks about the US president it is because you actually ARE the most powerful country at the moment... you pretty much cannot spend one day without getting something from America (food, movies, TV shows, role in history...) so it is no wonder that we do talk about the American presidents... I mean... try not to take it too much the wrong way you know... like if you stand for him then state why and enlighten us.. and if you're against then you can illustrate that not "all" american are for him... ya know?

And I'm the first one to say how bad is the French government... look at how they deal with the strike right now.. complete bullshit... how we almost elected a friggin racist (the going out in the streets to manifest THAT ONE time was justified hehe) ... we got huge problem with immigration and inequality, problem with secularism etc etc.... Chirac's a crook.. everyone knows it... and one of our minister is a nervous dwarf that keeps trying to get the place of president in being too extrem...

And not only talking about the US... lately I've been criticisizing Poland for letting the campaign to "cure" gay ppl happen... all led by the Church which is getting incredibly powerful... scary!

Hehe, yeah there's a reason no one (who isn't Swedish) complains about the Swedish government, it's cause they don't affect you and you probably almost never hear anything about them. What Bush does is a liiiittle bit more important world wise... 😉

Hey! We're not all fat! Well, *I* am.....but that's not the point! Hey! LOL!

I have noticed our growing religiously-based POV. Kinda scaring me....altho I'm not a practicing Catholic, and am leery of organized religion in general.....it's almost the "new, cool thing" to proclaim adherence to some form of same. Almost the first question anyone asks upon meeting you is what church you go to! I ask them if that's their business, and of course, get the "what new and interesting species of bug is THIS?" look, but hey.....it's not their damn business if I go to church, and if I do, WHICH one! Why don't they ask me how much I weigh? Or my sexual orientation? Or if I paid my taxes last year? I mean...if we're going to get all personal! Anyway, I tend to ramble and I'm getting OT here....sorry, folks!

Back on T: I'm of Puerto Rican descent, and I used to run across the misconception that all PR's are like those in West Side Story, that we all come from the same type of background; barrios, large families with moms at home cooking rice and beans all day, gangs out running the streets with knives.

as I said.. my friends think that... I didnt say I shared their opinion... I'm slightly biased when it comes to my opinion about the US cause... GAH I LOVE this country... but I wondered though why is it funny?

And wow miffed... do they really ask you that? *shudders* what about atheists ppl? how are they considered in there you think?
