Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Witch
- I love how Giles completely disapproves of Buffy wanting to cheerlead, especially when he called it a cult. When he said he forbides Buffy, it reminded me of how Wesley forbides Buffy from doing something that I can't remember right now. Which reminds me, I hope we alternate between Buffy & Angel when we get to it. I don't see why not and it would feel a little odd just watching the important episodes because I don't think it has the same impact.
-The first witch on Buffy which is awesome. I'm glad they made it so not all witches are evil.
-For some reason I really like the atmosphere of the cheerleading scenes with the music.
- "Enough with the hyperbole" I love this line from Cordy.
- The main lesson that Joss tries to teach us in the Buffyverse is that if you dance/cheerlead, you will combust. It's unfortunate, but a fact of life.
- Giles find the glass half full is just great. Giles is my favourite character tied with Cordelia up until season 3. From there its Anya and Tara who steal my heart.
- I guess 'The Slayerettes' didn't stick.
- Haha way to be supportive for your daughter Joyce.
- Cordy confronting Amy is a scene that I like but its one of those season 1 meaness moments. From season 2 on Cordelia still has an attitude, but it has a whole lot of truth to back it up.
- I want to live in a house that looks like Amy's. It just looks really nice.
- I hate that cupcake top for reasons I can't explain.
- Joyces line about being shaky on the dismount cracks me up every time.
- I always found Xander's crush on Buffy and Willows crush on Xander to be rather cringeworthy. That being said, by the time season 7 came around I would have mind it. Maybe because the grew in a way that I think its a more fitting idea in that stage of their lives.
- Considering her driving in prophecy girl, I find it hard to fully blame the terrible driving on Cordelia's lack of eye sight 😉
- "Maybe because they met her" wow these grapes are sour.
- The science teacher is a very interesting character and this episode shows that he could ptentially be a recurring character for a very long time.
- Buffy is so subtle about getting Amy's hair and spilling the liquid on her.
- Macho man is the best.
- The scene where Buffy is doing cheerleading practice is the best part of this episode. Especially when she throws that girl half way across the room.
- I love how Xander's 'one of the guy's' comment comes back to bite him when Buffy says he's just like one of the girls.
- This episode always leaves me with a craving for brownies.
- The reveal that they had swapped bodies is such a great plot twist.
- That cat always scares me.
- In any other situation, Giles shoving the stuff off the desk and lying Buffy on top of it, would be deeme dinappropiate haha
- Giles gets knocked out for the first of many times to come.
- Its kind of creepy how the mother is stuck in a statue for life...or until graduation day.
- Joyce's talk with Buffy towards the end is just so sweet and gives me warm feelings.
- I kind of wish that Amy stayed innocent and never started with the witchcraft. It just takes the shine off that final scene for me in the rewatches.

Don't quite have the time to write up all my thoughts on the episode, but...
I definitely will be watching Angel when that happens -- I think I'll start it in another thread, in case some people don't want to take part in that as well, but when we get to the start of season 4, I'll start that thread and do that rewatch as well (I actually haven't yet finished Angel, just starting Season 5, and haven't been alternating).

Okay, to start off here, I didn't take notes during the episode and I actually watched it a couple days ago, so this is going to read a lot differently than what I said for the first couple...
First thing being first, body swap episode. Comes up later in the series, and I like that episode A LOT more than this one. (And seriously, I cannot watch a single episode without thinking of Faith. This is a little ridiculous.)
One of the first things I noticed is that Giles is quite insulting towards Buffy at the beginning -- something that definitely went away later on.
...Huh, apparently the whole "cult" thing wasn't in the shooting script, but added later. That's... interesting.
The cheerleading segments reminded me little too much of the movie, and are way too 90s -- then again, this is from the 90s, but it did not age well.
Until I started listening to the podcasts (did I mention that I'm listening to something like 6 Buffy podcasts alongside this rewatch? It's insane.), I didn't know that people debated when the body swap took place. I thought it was made pretty clear that we never really saw Amy in this episode until the very end. Also, at the end, she was dressed quite ridiculously...... I approve.
...I can't really think of anything else. Not really a fan of this episode -- there's nothing particularly wrong with it, but there's also nothing really outstanding about it, so I'm just neutral about the whole thing.
I guess they're not all evil, but that's pretty much all due to Tara (I'm sure this will come up later on).
I love the word "hyperbole", so yeah, that line is awesome. And she is smarter than she lets on...
I guess that lots of movement like that will cause a person to overheat...
One of the podcasts I'm listening to is The Slayerettes, and they went crazy over this episode using that term.
I actually find the relationships between the main three would've been much more out of place later, but let's cross that bridge when we get there.

They should've realized early on that the Hellmouth is never safe -- though they do eventually do something about it.

I never thought about the fact that Charisma would've had to downplay her skills before you mentioned it -- that's actually pretty interesting to think about.
I didn't notice the railroad spike comment until every single podcast pointed it out, but yeah, that's interesting... I wonder what the connection was.

- Giles speech at the beginning is hilarious once you realize he's talking about cheerleading
- It's interesting to note that yellow seems to be a popular color for California High Schools. Buffy's previous school in L.A. had the colors yellow and blue (movie) or white and red (comic).
- And so we are introduced to Amy, loveable witch that later shows up in Season 6 and hinders Willow's recovery from her addiction to magick...I used to really like her when I first started watching, but after seeing S6 and reading S8, I'm not so sure if I like her anymore
- Very creepy scene where the first bewitching is made. This is kinda corny, but considering that the show was just starting to get onto its feet, its understandable
- "She's on fire!" Cordelia's response is just typical considering her usual responses 😛
- Xander still trying to get Buffy to go out with him. It's still funny
- You can really see the hurt in Willow's eyes when she hears that Xander thinks of her as one of the 'guys'
- It's interesting to note that Amy's mother really does play the part of a typical teenager. Her responses to Buffy are something that I would expect to hear
- Xander checking out the books on Pagans and Witchcraft just to see the engravings 🙄
- It's nice to see a change of pace from the vampires that we had seen for the first two episodes. You can tell that Joss wanted to show that the series could do something else besides Vampires and still have it be interesting. It's extremely similar to how X-Files did episodes that weren't about aliens to show that the show was possible of other subjects
- Bewitched Buffy is just so cute and funny at the same time
- It's interesting to note that Giles saying this was his first spell-casting can either be considered a lie or a half-truth. It is possible that Joss had things planned out a certain way, but the more likely answer is that it's just simply a retcon
- Overall, an enjoyable episode, but clearly not one of the better ones from the series as a whole. Season-wise, it's one of the best

What organization? Oh, that might be what you're talking about...
I love Cordelia's response to that because she uses the word "hyperbole" -- I love that word, and it shows that she's smarter than she lets on (hell, she might be smarter than a good number of the viewers at the time, since how many people actually know what that word means? And I need to stop my rambling.)
I think the fact that this is one of the better episodes in the season is more a sign of how weak the season is than anything else -- I really don't like Season 1, and this rewatch hasn't improved my opinion of it by much -- I'm liking some episodes more, but the bad ones (like the next one) are looking even worse.

And now it's time for the next episode: Teacher's Pet. I took note of stuff stream of consciousness, but it's barely notes, just... It's because this episode is bad.
Opening dream sequence makes me cringe. Seriously. Then again, this whole episode does. It is not a good episode.
I've been watching Angel so much recently I kind of expected that theme song to start playing. I like the version from season 3 onward better than the one used here. I need to stop harping on this, though -- it will go away eventually.
On a different note, am I insane? I always prefer watching things with the closed captioning on. I mean, my hearing isn't great, but not that terrible. It tells you how bad this episode is that I'm here talking about this instead of actually saying something about the episode...
Also, David Greenwalt wrote this episode? He's capable of so much better, but I think he's stronger as showrunner on Angel than he ever was as writer on Buffy. Not sure what to make of that. Though, he is the guy mostly responsible for Angel as a character, so he does have that to his credit. I don't know -- maybe as we go through this rewatch, I'll get a better handle on things like that. Interesting thing to note is that he and Joss are the only Season 1 writers who were still on the show during Season 3. Tells you something about the quality of the other writers, since there was a drastic improvement after Season 1 and why am I still not talking about the episode? Seriously, it's not good.
Science 109? High school classes using a number system like in college? This strikes me as weird. Also, for the effect she had on the students, I think that they should've cast someone more attractive as the substitute teacher -- that might sound terrible, but I'm just being honest... I mean, looking solely at her chest, I see what they saw, but...
I don't even really have a reaction to finding the headless teacher in the fridge. They would've made that work better if they'd done something with him in previous episodes -- maybe even just a short appearance, but something to make us have a connection with him. Maybe I'm being too overly cynical about the whole thing, but really -- this is not good, and I'm unaffected by most of what happens in it.
Also, dark. Really dark. I think they finally got the money for better lighting in season 2, but this is incredibly dark -- obviously not shooting day for night -- and it just doesn't look good. This is what I remembered being such a problem with Season 1. Video quality is better than I remember, but the lighting in a lot of scenes is just terrible.
Flutie is just... weird... a little overbearing. Though, Cordelia is legitimately funny, so there are at least some good things in this episode.
And the portrayal of education in every TV show and movie I've ever seen, but this is especially bad, but that's down to the character.
I just feel like I have nothing to say. This is such a nothing episode that I... have nothing to really say... I'm kind of running out of things to ramble about -- Wait, thought of something. Xander has this thing about actively trying to sleep with women who are trying to kill him -- until the one time he isn't actively seeking them out, at which point... seriously, this is becoming a running thing -- I can't get through a single episode without something in it making me think of Faith. This is going to be a long wait until Season 3...
And I didn't take any more notes in the episode (that last part was written with something like twenty minutes to go). Wow, that's a sign it really WAS that bad. I just never really had anything to say about this episode.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Teacher's Pet
- I'm writing my thoughts on this episode after the first watch instead of going back to rewatch and take notes. Normally I watch it without distractions, then I go back and watch the episode again to take notes, but this episode was so bad that I decideded not to put the effort into it. Since they obviously didn't.
- That dream sequence makes me hate Xander so much. He is so awful and gross. I can't wait for season 4 Xander.
- Bye bye Professor Gregory. We hardly knew of cared for thee.
- The subbug is a really gross and cougar-y. Also its so not obvious that she is the bug.
- Angel in this episode is all hot and mysterious (and extremely unhelpful).
- Cordelia is the best part of the episode. She is just so awesome. I will never stop complimenting her in these thoughts!
- I hate Principle Flutie. Snyder is such a great character, in a horrible mean man way. He still has amazing lines and ugh can Flutie get eaten yet. (That came out more harsh than I though lol)
- That wasn't very stealthy of Ms. French to rotate her head in the middle of the class and infront of a student who you obviously know is there. You deserve to have your evil plans foiled based on that alone.
- During episodes like this I feel like playing 'Anywhere else but here'.
- Oh i'm so excited for that cliffhanger that will never be followed up...
- I can't wait to get season one over and done with. The only episode i'm actually really excited about thats coming up is Prophecy Girl, because feelings.

If you look at my notes, you're going to see that I had a similar disinterest -- I stopped taking notes with 20 minutes left, and I didn't even really take notes on the episode as it was.
Xander is just being a typical teenage guy. Seriously, that's all it is -- we're all guilty of that in high school.
A lot of people (in the podcasts, which I'll get back to later) have said they did Dr. Gregory well, but I think they did a mediocre job at best.
Cordelia is always fun to watch (until season 4 of Angel, but that's a LONG way off), but yeah, she's usually the most entertaining part of otherwise bad episodes. Then again, she doesn't really redeem them at all...
I don't mind Principal Flutie, but Snyder is more fun to have around.
I like a few episodes of this series, and I remember not liking Prophecy Girl when I first watched through it. I do kind of agree about wanting to get past Season One, but even Season Two is really uneven. Then again, it does have its really good parts.
On that note, what do people think we should do about Surprise and Innocence? Should we watch them together, or treat them like separate episodes? They feel like a two-parter but aren't technically, so I'm trying to figure out what to do about those episodes. It'll be a while before we get there, but I want ideas early (this also applies to future episodes, like Bad Girls/Consequences, This Year's Girl/Who Are You, and the like, which feel like two-parters but aren't listed as such). Should we watch them together to help speed along the rewatch, or should we keep them apart? We might even do it differently on a case-by-case basis.
Okay, on the note of podcasts that I mentioned, I'm also listening to episode-by-episode recaps along with the rewatch -- I've listened to some of them straight through, but they work better when watching along with the podcasts. Currently, I'm listening to:

I thought the Xander dream was hilarious. I'm actually kind of surprised it bugs so many people. I think if we're all honest with ourselves, we've all had moments like that. Almost everyone wants to be more than they are. I don't think he was being sexist or chauvinistic at all
I really liked Dr. Gregory actually. I thought S1 did a really good job of making Buffy seem like an outsider, especially from the school side of things. I remember first watching this episode and thinking "ok, awesome, finally someone who gets Buffy". And then he dies. I don't know, I liked him.
Oh my god, I can't wait for Snyder. Seriously, the funniest character ever.

As much as I like that idea, we've all seen it before and therefore the suspense is gone. If you don't know what happens in Innocence, Surprise can spur a lot of discussion and speculation, but since we already know, we'd just be discussing half the story.
I might be able to come up with something to keep the discussion going, though. It's not something that we need to figure out right away, so we can think it out a bit more over time.
All I know is that I'm guilty of being like Xander at times, so yeah...
Well, to each their own about Dr. Gregory. I guess it worked better when you first saw it, and going back to it with the context of the rest of the show, it doesn't feel quite as poignant.
Actually, that would've been a good way to work it into the show -- would've probably been cheesy beyond belief, but given the rest of this episode...
That doesn't make sense to me, unless anyone here went to a high school where they numbered things like that -- every single place I've gone to school numbered the rooms and that was it. Not a numbering system like that. Would've made sense if there were multiple buildings...
Actually, schawarma was what got Nick the role of Xander -- it's buried somewhere in the DVD special features, not entirely sure where, though.
And we'll disagree about the episode -- I was honestly kind of bored watching it, when I wasn't cringing or the couple of times I actually laughed -- my mind was all over the place, anywhere but the episode.

I meant that they were aired seperatly to build up suspense. I can work either way with watching them both on the same day or watching them seperatly
Yeah I like episodes such as Witch, The Puppet Show, Nightmares and Prophecy in season 1.
Surprise and Innocence are a two parter so we should watch that together. Episodes like Bad Girls and Consequences should be watched together for the sake of speeding things up.
I know this isn't a podcast but theior recaps are seriously hilarious and nothing is scared. I had tears of laughter just reading them.

It's not that Season 1 is bad, but it just doesn't measure up properly to what comes later. But to me, "Prophecy Girl" is just as good as say "Grave" or "Becoming". "Welcome The Hellmouth/The Harvest" is just as good as "Bargaining Pts. 1 & 2"
I like Prophecy better than Becoming Part 2. I find Becoming Part 2 to be kind of boring with exceptions of the fight with Joyce and the last 10 minutes basically.
