I disagree with this. Xander had always thought too low of himself, and if he made cocky comments about himself, they were more about hiding the insecure guy inside than being real.

I love Xander. He's one of the most underrated characters in the fandom. He kinda reminds me of Ron Weasley - a similar character who attracts a lot of (IMO, unfair) hate from the fandom, but who I love.

Xander makes me laugh, can offer great inspirational speeches and was just a great character in general for me. His devotion to his friends was really great to see on screen and unlike a lot of characters on the show he wasn't someone who took himself too seriously. He knew his role within the group and accepted it.

I mean, yes, Xander is full of faults, and one of his flaws is his insecurity, which is why I was surprised to read about Xander thinking highly of himself.

I just don't like how it represents Bangel. It makes them seem like they would be completely miserable unless Angel was human which I don't believe is true.
Like I said, I don't hate the episode, I do enjoy it. But there are many, many more Bangel focused episodes I enjoy a hell of a lot more.
& quite frankly, I'm just a sucker for Angel being a Vampire with a Soul 😛

I don't like Xander. He just happens to have the two faults I generally find most annoying in people: hypocrisy and extreme insecurity.

Xander was really done right by Season Eight. Clearly he needed just one more season to complete his story. Xander's problem is that he was abandoned by the writers after they had him and Anya break up. They were telling a wonderful story about a person of average abilities but above-average will growing out of an awkward adolescence and embracing maturity and grown-up life. But then they just gave up and left his growth stunted in S7. Leaving his story unfinished makes it a bit tougher to stomach his growing pains from time to time.

I know this off-topic, but I completely agree, sosalola.
Anyone can see that behind Xander's "confident" exterior lies an insecure guy who just wants people to like him. That's part of what's so relatable about him. He's Everyman.

The biggest thing that bothered me about him was in the last ep of S7. When he was told that Anya had died, all he said was "atta girl." Now, you could argue that he was hiding his feelings, but. Seriously? Ouch, dude. I should also mention that I haven't read season 8 yet, so if there has been any mention of this, then my apologies.

I agree on so many levels with what you've just said. Xander and his character journey fell by the wayside with all the emphasis on the Potentials and Spuffy in Season 7. In the past, I've stuggled with how I feel about Xander. It's flucuated from hate to indifference. But lately, I'm loving him and the decisions he's been making. He's been standing up for himself and showing his true heroic colors. I think he's a character we can admire. I encourage everyone who dislikes him to really take a look at the person he is now, in Season 8. He's changed alot.
I agree, and these are usually traits I dislike in people as well, but Xander HAS changed.

Interesting. I read his reaction completely differently. His response "that's my girl, always doing the stupid thing" is a testament to how much he cared for and knew Anya. He knew, in the end, she'd go down bravely fighting for the humans she'd grown to love. I thought it was heartbreaking. That's why he wasn't shocked or surpised. Spuffy is my OTP, but if there were ever two people that were perfect for each other it was Xander and Anya. They were made for each other.

When Xander said "That's my girl" i always took it as a really caring comment. He was proud of her, i can't see how that comment was negative in anyway.

Xander's reaction would have been different if Andrew didn't say that Anya saved him. He'd break down and sob for her loss
BUT Andrew lied, saying that Anya died because she saved his life, and it made Xander proud of her. He knew that she had difficulty with having feelings for other human beings (that aren't Xander) so the fact that Anya died rescuing another human she didn't care for filled Xander with pride and lessened his grief, knowing that Anya died a hero.
Andrew made up a story to make Xander feel better. It was a big moment for Andrew, finally using storytelling to help someone else feel better.
And why doubt Xander's love for Anya? The guy was looking for her in the collapsing high school. He wasn't going to leave until he found her. If Dawn hadn't dragged him out, he would have died with Anya.

As for the hypocrisy, Xander stopped being a hypocrite after he was put in Buffy's situation in Selfless. Watch how he subtly evolves in S7 regarding Spuffy.
