US Elections

When the president talks about injecting or ingesting disinfectants, it is time to fire him, period.

1 million infected and 60k dead makes this *not* a joking matter.

He wasn't joking. He also wasn't talking about people injecting or ingesting disinfectants. He was talking about it being used in a medical setting, to the guy doing research on it. He's a businessman, he's used to spit-balling. Also, if you watched the entire press conference and not just the sound byte, he says several times he's not a doctor and it's not something that is known.

Should he have said it during a press conference? No. Should he have said he was being sarcastic? No. Was he telling people to go drink bleach? No. Were his intentions to find a solution to the problem? Yes.

It's the same as de Blasio saying when this is all over he's going to have a ticker tape parade. The intent was saying he wanted to honor the health care workers. But people chose to take him literally and go after him for it. And what good does that do?

We have to stop looking for the next thing we can use to go after somebody about.

Also, you don't just "fire" an elected official . That's why we have elections.

He's a businessman, he's used to spit-balling.
And that is a major problem right there. It's in the middle of a pandemic and he's spitballing? Seriously? That's nasty and unsanitary in the best of times, but spitballing during a pandemic is just making a joke of the whole issue.

Here's a reminder that all of Trump's press conferences are edited and doctored before they air on networks not named "Fox News".

You don't spitball or grandstand or play the businessman when the world is burning. You LEAD. Adulthood. It is required. Bush did it during 9/11, Obama during the fiscal debacle of 2008- . Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington, Nixon, Johnson, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan all LED. In fact, nearly every president we have had has acted like a grown up when big stuff went down.

This is not me being partisan. I live in a multistate area and our leaders are both parties (more than 2 actually if you count down ballot) and they are banding together and working on cooperative strategies and tactical action and lives are being saved.

We have, as a nation, by far the worst COVID outcomes, however, and national leadership could have prevented at least some of this. Instead, the president spends time undercutting his science and medical advisors and putting on a show. And then he plays Russian Roulette with nonsense about internal use of disinfectants, many of which are potent poisons!! It is a moral failure and borders on criminal. It is ungodly, unscientific, and just plain wrong.

I am not putting him down. He is shaming himself and the country and people are dying because of misinformation, disinformation, opportunity wasted and money squandered. Obstacles actually are put in the way of those trying to fix things.

A world of no! Don't die. Don't let innocents die. Basic Buffy morality. Show up. It is the mission that matters. He has no idea who or what is the mission. EVERY other president has done better.

Serious questions, I am not taking the piss:

What benchmark are you using for outcomes?

What (specifically) could have been done differently?

I admint that i never liked Trump but his handling of this whole thing is really bad . People show how they are best during a cricis & Trump
not doing good to put it very mildy . I could say other things but i believe there a rule here about bad language .

He could have had a bash at being an adult. Just today he's tweeting about the "lamestream" media. I know it's a small thing but it just sums up everything about the man. We're in a global pandemic and he can't even feign being dignified, serious or statesman like.

Some people like that he can remain himself and the person they voted for though. Acting the way he did/does is what got him elected. It would be worse if he suddenly changed. Then people would lament that he is just faking it and not sincere, etc etc Both sides would lose respect for him then.

I'd argue that the respect of people who wish for you to act like a childish ass during a global emergency isn't worth having, election or not.

I rather have a person who doing something good. Not to throw gas on the fire but if he started atting different & saved a lot of lives how is that a bad thing ?

I think you think the office of the president has more power than it actually has.
So ChaseRules said, "I'd rather have a person who is doing something good. Not to throw gas (petroleum, inflammable liquid etc🙂 on the fire and started acting differently (changed his ways) and saved a lot of lives how is that a bad thing?

To which Spanky added a comment, I think you think the office of the President has more power than it actually does.

So what power does the President have? Does he have the power to be in charge of the most powerful country on the planet? Or is it congress that is in charge and if congress is in charge why have a President?

Good Questions.

The office of the President has control over vetoing anything congress wants to do as well as the military. That's why the President is called the Commander in Chief. As far as control over the country - ie the United States, he does not. That's why some states have policies and laws that are unlawful in other states. The Federal Government (ie the president and congress), for instance, has decried that the use of recreational cannabis is illegal, yet some states have disregarded that and made it legal. The office of the President does not affect how states opt to govern themselves. That's why when the office of the President suggested one course of action when dealing with national emergencies, states have disregarded those suggestions and implemented their own policy. Different states govern differently, and that has nothing at all to do with the office of the President but the state and locally elected officials. The President is meant to represent and support those officials not the other way around.

That is why the office of the President is said to be employed by the people.

Thanks for the reply
I trust Johns Hopkins University's statistics - and they are supported by other stats from respected scientific sources.

I didn't mean the source, I meant, are you looking at deaths per capita, or total infections, recovery rate...? How are you quantifying outcomes?

But that doesn't have anything to do with his handling of the virus. That's a reason to dislike him, sure, but it's not really something he could have done differently that would have saved lives.

Look, the guy could cure every disease on the planet, stop world hunger, and have Jesus Christ as his spokesperson...yet, some people would STILL find an obscure reason to criticise him.
