Vampires and Love in Jossverse

While reading Jen Sonstein's (formally of ScoopMe.com)review of Season 5's "Fool For Love", I came across the following:


"Somehow, when Dru stole his soul, she left part of his heart intact. Someone needs to explain to me a Joss concept I've never really understood"”how can a vamp be so heartless, yet possess the ability to love and be loved? How can one lacking a soul experience such sensitivity?"

and;

" Thank you to the writers for totally shocking me, but I'm utterly confused! This episode left me with such warm feelings and hungry for more. But, it also reminded me of the inconsistencies of Joss-world and his vampire lore. What allows Spike the ability to still be true to his heart when he has no soul? Is it possible that one can work independently of the other? I'm not so sure if I can accept this concept. When Angelus returned, his heart seemed to harden"”there was no Angel to be seen. How is it that Spike can be such a softy? Is this another confusing element of Buffy-verse we meant to just sit back and accept?"

How many of you feel the same? That Whedon was inconsistent about a souless vampire having the ability to love? And how many of you understand what Whedon was leading to, in regard to Spike and to Buffy's view on vampires and demons, in general?

i think i've seen an interviwe where that is explained or something, how he and dru can love... '

my teori is, that it might not acually be real love, like soul people feel it, it might just be obbsetion!(bad spelling i know!) if you know what i mean? that it might be all about having controll, and being in controll!! i think he might need them to be human, but not human.. you know there are evil people for real that "love" but i also think that might be all about controll or what ever! it's all a mirage...

i have no prob with the whole spike-dru or spike-buffy thing, what i do have a prob with is that harmony's vamp char s badly designed, she's all evil vamp, but she is clingy, can't seem to satnd up for her self and she is whiny! How does that happen..

I think Harmony and Spike, just by random chance, got weaker demons. In Spike it manifests itself in his emotions, and in Harm, it's in her strength and clinginess. The weaker demon theory could also explain why some vamps are weaker than others. (Plus bloodlines and age help too)

i agree with ou watcherwes🙂 beisdes, if you can feel happy, or sad, angry, then you hould tecnaly feel all feelings(even if you can't access them as easaly...) shouldn't you?

yeah, what you're all saying makes sense...maybe the soul less demon can still love, but Angelus just never was really in love..he was just more "evil"

I like hearing all the different perspectives on this.

But thinking about it, vampires do feel emotions, but everything they feel is completely from their point of veiw, completely without any consideration for anyone else (soulless in nature). So maybe it's this way with their feelings of love also.

Spike loves Buffy. That's all he gives any thought to. He keeps insisting that Buffy reciprocates these feelings (even though everyone knows she does'nt).

So even though their emotions are genuine and valid, they lack what makes them human or "good" in nature, the ability to trully put someone else before ones self.

Just theories.
