Veggie/Veganism

Oh your god how could you!
The least you could have done was to put a face on the side of them Sundae's,
you could have re-used the smiley face from the beginning of your post,

sweetie.

It's winter, I don't want ice cream in winter!

At the moment I go through phases with eggs, I either eats lots of them or don't eat them for months. Haven't quite worked out how to not give in to scrambled egg when I suddenly want eggs again.

Yellow Couscous with Pomegranate and Mint Citrus Dressing

This is the recipe I did before, it was quick and easy and people seemed to enjoy it.

If I had my dream house I'd have a fruit orchard and vegetable & herbal gardens.

This is my house 😀 But I am not vegan. I ride horses, keep pets and use leather. Also I thrive on honey, dairy and eggs. The plants need quite a bit of fertilisation, and while I use home produced chook poop, plants also need blood and bone and other animal products to produce the nutrients that we eat them for. I do think farming practices can improve in all areas but we can never save the world unless we can provide free, fresh water to all, and that ain't gona happen.

I had a phase where I didn't want to eat bacon cos the Piglets scream when they come past my house, but then I realised that ALL of the animals make noise when they are on the trucks. There are live export debates going on in this region. If I was boss of the world, I would encourage animals to be processed nearer their home farms but it is just not viable in this consumer environment. I haven't looked into the live export debate much because the group driving it are extremist and I have seen their videos from industries that I have worked in and know that the horrific things they show are 1 in a million events. I also do not think showing the most horrific parts of the animal industries is helpful or healthy for anyone. I have worked in farming and those animals have a bloody brilliant life before the time of travel. Some areas are not suited for anything thing else BUT cows or sheep. Dairy cows get some of the best care I have seen at the places I have been involved in. As do racehorses. If animals are not cared for, they will not perform. I live near the chicken capital so I know my chicken is locally sourced, all of my meat is RSPCA approved (but I do not put much faith in the RSPCA having had some involvement with them as a volunteer). I eat less meat than I did when I was living with others but I cannot completely cut it out because of health reasons.

Environment wise - we are in the crapper anyway and I am not leaving any spawn behind. By the time the world is paying for the sins of consumer past, I will be long gone off this rock. I do try to be environmentally aware, but hate to be forced by hashtag trends and am still raging about this plastic bag ban. Especially after recent injury from trying to load bulk buys into boxes in the back of the car because they were going to charge me for bags if I didn't prove I had boxes to hold the stuff in the car (I did not have enough money to buy 40 of their reusable PLASTIC bags). I feel like a fair few people get hung up on the hashtags and forget the other ways that are just as taxing to the environment - like using a car, air travel, clothing, heating, electricity, mobile phones and water use. I'd have a solid case to argue that my lifestyle is more environmentally aware and healthy than the average vegan lifestyle.

I did learn how to cook beans in a variety of ways when I was super super poor, I am glad to have that knowledge 😀 Most of my meals are now made for between $2 -$10 and I get a thrill from making super easy and cheap meals that are delish! Some days I feel like Jesus with his fish and bread, I can bulk anything up and then have too much food for myself. Lucky the chooks (and neighbours) seem to love my cooking too.

Been veggie for 16 months now, ever since I went to visit @Taake. If she were a Sith Lord I'd be 50% over to the dark side.

I've been monitoring my protein intake, because I don't think I have enough, so I'm trying to incorporate more eggs, nuts, cheese and green veg into my diet.

My current fave go-to quick meal are halloumi and roasted vegetable wraps. Super easy! Just roast some onions, garlic, tomatoes, courgette, carrots etc in the oven with a bit of olive oil and grill some halloumi slices and stick it all in a tortilla wrap with a little mayo (or whatever dressing you want) - super quick, super delicious!

Protein is found in a lot of products. Most carnivores get too much of it. It's a myth that vegans & vegetarians don't get enough protein.

Hm, should I view that as a 50% success rate, or 50% failure? :P The dark side beckons...

That sounds good, I've been thinking about making some breakfast burritos in a batch and freezing them for quick and easy meals. I think I could make some with egg and some without to begin with, and try a few different veggies.

I bought chocolate soya milk about 2 weeks ago now, I usually drink it down either that day or the day after but I've had to throw the last of it out, don't know what's going on but I've gone off pretty much all drinks other than tea lately, so I've going to have to experiment with different milks in tea, almond which I use for most things is too strong a flavour for me in tea, might try oat, I like that, but haven't tried it in tea.

So when did vegan become abou just food? Vegan is more a lifestyle than just about what you eat. Clothing, hygiene products, make-up, etc, all that is affected by a vegan lifestyle. But nowadays people seemingly use vegan and vegetarian synonymously. And I'm like oh, look, a nit! let me pick it. There are some vegans that refuse to use public transportation because, among other things, the have leather-trimmed seats.

And it reeeeeally pisses some vegans off let me tell you. If you say "vegan diet" or claim that vegetarianism includes dairy and eggs they'll be ready to throttle you. Plenty of vegans still insist that vegetarianism is ZERO animal products in your food, while veganism is an entire life style, nothing less. I say it's a losing battle because vegetarianism has clearly shifted it's original meaning in the general public and you won't easily change it back, so, like... why bother? If you don't want dairy, cheese or eggs in your food you're gonna have to say that you're vegan, or people just don't get it. That's probably why veganism has become a lot more about food specifically.

I might make flapjacks this week, I've not made any in years, but I think they are vegan if I use my dairy free butter. I probably can add some of my mother's homemade apple sauce in them as well.

So I failed at being veggie this year, but I have cut down a lot, found lots of new foods to try. However I want to try again in the new year, fish has come back into the freezer again, not really sure why I bought it as I'm not a big fish fan anyway, so that's the first to go. I think chicken is the hardest to give up as it's so easy to make meals with, some things I'm able to put mushrooms in place of chicken or these:

I want to cut back on dairy too, I don't use a lot, but chocolate and ice cream are weaknesses!
I am a vegan & I love ice cream you can get vegan ice cream.

I've going to have to experiment with different milks in tea,
From my experience, anything other than cow's milk is rubbish in hot drinks, apart from cocoa. I've even tried the specific 'barista' oat milks and I just can't get used to the taste and texture.

veganism is an entire life style, nothing less

I think this is where I get confused on terms. I visit the hippy capital of this state every chance I get. Some people there are full on vegan.

That means - No pets, no coffee, no travel, no pills, no chemical cleaning products, no shoes, no clothes unless sarongs or made from local material (hemp), definitely no shaving or spending money on grooming products. There is an entire ecovillage planned to be constructed from hemp. There are a few hidden communes and spiritual communities. They would not be caught dead in a mainstream shopping centre buying ultra processed food and icecreams. (Unless someone packaged that into a hidden hipster riverside cafe with no dress code an option to wash in the river, because they are all, somehow, very wealthy).

No pets is not vegan if the animal will be euthanized if you don't adopt.
I got given a bag of apples last night, and we were talking about growing your own, I think I want to try and do a little food swap thing next year, maybe just within the craft group to begin with, as most of us grow some form of fruit or veg.

I'd rather use and reuse first, then buy new and better if I need something again, whether that be clothing, furniture or anything else. Clothing wise, my jeans are coming to the end of their life, so I'll start looking around for a pair, I'll probably get a decent pair secondhand in the charity shop, which I think these ones came from anyway. However the ones I do have will be cut up and use for other things.

I don't know if I can give up Clarks shoes though, I have very sensitive feet, and they're the only ones I've found that don't hurt my feet.

Food swaps are cool!

I love Clarks too. Why would you have to give up Clarks?

@Athena do they not contain leather? I guess I just thought they were leather, mine are too old to have readable labels now for me to check

Love the idea of a food swap 😀 Mine is on a small scale but there are fewer people here.

Today made a real basic curry that I think counts as vegan?

2 onions
2 carrots
2 potatoes
2 tins of bean things (one chick pea, one lentil)
tablespoon of LSA meal
tablespoon of turmeric
Table spoon of green curry paste (needed a bit more)
teaspoon of hemp dust stuff
teaspoon of raw sugar
teaspoon of garlic granules
tin of coconut cream
Salt/pepper and other bits to taste that I forgot all of.
1 cup of rice cooked seperately

Entire meal cost approx $6 and I have way too much. I'll have some more for dinner and then freeze 4X containers of the rest. Its a little on the bland side so I can add more bits when I unfreeze for another meal.

Hmm I guess even if the shoe surround isn't leather maybe they could still contain it inside.....

I'll just have to check next time I need a pair, hopefully they will be fine, I don't want to have to try and find a different company that won't hurt my feet
