Every time I see Eve in S5, I think, "that should be Lilah." Does anyone know if that actress was supposed to come back in S5 and didn't for some reason? Or did they make up a nearly-identical character with a new actress on purpose? Eve was good, but personally, I think Lilah would have been better. She was just slightly more diabolical.

Couldn't agree more, Eve NEVER made sense to me either! Lilah would have been so much more fun

I can't remember where I read it but I believe the story is that in order to bring back Angel for S5, Mutant Enemy was under two orders, one was to cut the cost of the program and the second one was to add a 'popular' (read: Spike or maybe Willow) character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

So they added James Marsters, and he costs some cash and they needed to strip some salary to make it work. This meant cutting out Connor, Cordelia, and Lilah. So that's the general reason I've heard.

No? That's why? That's just break my Lilah lover heart :(
I don't know, though. Lilah wasn't a regular or some really huge star. I doubt it could have cost them too much to use as a guest star.

I think Lilah character is over(even we love her) after she gave A.I. Wolfram&Hart. And it would be boring more than surprise if too many people kept coming back(Lindsey, Spike and Cordy = 3 characters already). And Lilah would distract Wes from Fred. :evilgrin1

Can't stand Fresley, Weslah all the way.
I missed Lilah. Seems a waste that they didn't use her after they took over W&H, since she was so synonymous with it.

I can also see arguments against bringing Lilah back, especially that she would have hampered the Fred/Wesley arch. They seemed to have been trying to bring Wesley back into the light, and she would have kept him in the dark. However, it wouldn't have been impossible to get Fred and Wes together with her there; it just would have gone differently.

Plus, with Eve, there was always the possibility that she was trustworthy, though I think 99% of the audience knew from the beginning that she was evil. With Lilah, there would have been no question that she had an alterior motive.

Still, I would have rather had Lilah. I got attached to the evil bitca despite myself.

Personally, I much preferred Lilah over Eve. At least Lilah was evil and enjoying it...Eve seems to me like a brat, plus her voice and face expressions really pissed me off!

I have noticed they both had a dark, secret desire for Angel, although Eve really cared for Lindsay...but they both got the chance...Eve in Life of the Party and Lilah seemed to believe that real Angel really wanted her in Carpe Noctem!

As much as I would of loved to of seen more Lilah, her last episode 'Home' was perfect. Oh how annoying is Eve's voice? I think if they did keep Lilah, I think she may even of helped Wesley with getting with Fred you know.

Seriously, WB was so stupid. One of their most popular shows (that I'm sure makes a killing in DVD sales as well), they axe it, and they go under. They deserved it.

Me too! I disliked her at first, and it took me awhile to get adjusted to her and Wesley, but in the end she really grew on me.

Bringing in Spike wasnt the cost of Cordelia,Lilah,Conner. Joss was done with all of their charecters and didnt think he needed them. Though I wouldve preferred to have Lilah fulltime in S5. They shouldve found a way to have Lilah and Eve, can you imagine the banter?

Don't want to sound like a mean girl, but Eve was just totally annoying. I agree that her voice and facial expressions just ticked me off. She came off as whiney and bratty. I see that Lilah's part was done, but she was just so awesome, I would have preferred her over Eve.

Love Lilah, but didn't they need to bring Eve in for the Lindsey and Spike arcs? I understand why she was there, but she was quite annoying to me.

I think as a fandom we have a tendency to latch onto character and want them all to be there all the time. That wouldnt allow for momentum in the storyline. Lilah was sealed up nicely and it would have begun to get tiresome. As annoying as Eve was, she was a fresh face and allowed the s5 story to feel separate from the others, which is exactly what it was.

I really don't buy this (not saying you are lying I know it's at least one of the official versions). Like the OP said Eves character was near identical to Lilah so I don't understand how Joss can be "done" with her then come up with Eve.

Quite honestly if Joss really ran out of things to do with them he really is quite a poor writer, for me the Conner arc was badly thought out from the start. I understand why they had to get rid of him but it was their own fault.

Well he fired Charisma. I heard that Vincent didn't want to be on TV he wanted to do movies so they wrote him out. I don't know why they wrote out Lilah. I definitely would have preferred her to Eve. Plus I wanted more Wes/Lilah scenes 😀

I didn't know Charisma was fired :(
Lilah would definitely have been better than Eve in Season 5, but I think that she could have confused the Wesley/Fred relationship, which, in turn, made the Wes/Illyria relationship so poignant.

OK, as far as Charisma goes, what I heard is that she had had a baby, so wanted to do fewer episodes, but Joss wanted it all or nothing, thus no Cordy in season 5 (save You're Welcome). Any truth to this?

I've heard this, too. I really don't think there is any way to prove or disprove this. Only Joss and Charisma will ever know what REALLY happened, and Hollywood people aren't exactly known for telling the truth. Both will spin it to make them sound better. I guess it just depends on who you believe in the end, though. It really is all just speculation, because we were not there.

As for Lilah, I loved her, she was a great character, I don't know how I feel about her being on the 5th season. Eve bothered the ever living CRAP out of me! However, she served a purpose. She needed to be there for the Lindsay storyline to work, among other things.

Agreed Katie. Might Eve rot in hell! But... another love triangle with Fred/Wesley/Lilah would have been over the top, no? 😕
