Weakest season opener?

'When She Was Bad' was always the one I was least impressed by.
WthH was great, 'Anne', 'The Freshman', 'Buffy vs. Dracula', and 'Lessons' informed us about what Buffy's journey was going to be in that particular season, 'Bargaining' was a strong reaffirmation of the series before the disappointment of what followed.
So, odd one out, 'WSWB' which- to me at least- always seemed weirdly disjointed with what Season 2 went on to become. It seemed more 'necessary' than relevant, if that makes sense.
Plus Buffy is acting like such a 'Bee Eye Tee See Atch' throughout.

I think if they were to do it now it could have been much better. They just skirted on the fact that Buffy was suffering from PTSD, now they could really touch on it and hammer it home. I never had an issue with the episode; I think Buffy vs Dracula was worse.

I think Buffy vs. Dracula was a missed opportunity. If they had taken Dracula seriously and not treated him like a silly joke in the writing and casting, then it would have been amazing. That he gets to be the second vampire to bite Buffy is ludicrous.

All the other season openers were okay, Welcome to the Hellmouth was probably the best, the way it set up the series. I also loved Anne. Bargaining was good too, but gets some points deducted for those dumb demon biker gangs.

Freshmen and Lessons were fairly average, there could have been done more with both premises.

The Freshman was my first episode so I have a soft spot for that one.Welcome to the Hellmouth is dated and cheesy but it's the first episode ever so it's forgivable. I loved Bargaining, Lessons, Anne & When She Was Bad. I agree that Buffy vs Dracula could've been a little darker (although I do appreciate humor) and Drac deserved more than one episode so that's the only reason it's the worst for me. I still love it, I just see its potential for more.

I disagree on the PTSD part. Part of the appeal of the episode is the suggestion that there maybe something supernatural going on. But as the episode plays out you find out otherwise. I think dramatically WSWB works better by playing out how it does. But I do agree that its a good episode and that Buffy VS. Dracula is worse. That is my least favourite season opening too.

I hated the Dracula episode. You don't have to make him Alucard but a little more threatening than that. But I don't even remember the season 7 one off the top of my head. That has to be a bad sign, right?

I watched S7's opener not too long ago. Its actually pretty good. It sets up the season as a whole very well. Its certainly not the worst season opener. I'd say its better than S5 and S6's openers.

BTW is your avatar and username a CM Punk reference? If so that's really cool!😎

Oh, now I remember the last scene where they ran through the seasonal big bads ending with Buffy, which was cool (cooler if Angelus was one of them, but still very cool). But my memory of season 7 episodes starts with the blue shirt Spike/big worm thing.

Cheers, Straight Edge Society was too long so I added my state initials...for some reason.

It's a toss up between When She Was Bad and Buffy vs. Dracula for me. Both are less than stellar but with a few saving graces. Might have to give the edge to BvD just for that stunningly shocking reveal/cliffhanger at the end, so Imma go with S2 as having the worst opener (ironic that the two seasons with the worst premieres are also my two favorite seasons 😛)

It's Bargaining for me. I don't really have anything against the episode. It's just the least enjoyable season opener for me to watch. I love all the others.

I would have to go with Buffy Vs. Dracula. While I do enjoy this episode now, it kind of missed the mark for getting the audience excited about the new season.

When She Was Bad is a mother cuddling masterpiece. I love the paradox of Buffy being both incredibly strong and frail at the same time. Faith thinks she is the edgy slayer. She has no idea.

The worst one for me is definitely Dracula. It was the first episode I ever watched all the way though, I think. I didn't like it at all. I don't dislike it quite so much now, but it is a terribly lacklustre opening. It is a comedy episode, but there are better jokes in Seeing Red.

Aw! It is my favourite. Willow leading the Scoobies, being recklessly brave, Giles teaching Tibetan philosophy to the Buffy-Bot, the Buffy-Bot and Dawn. It is such a great exploration of absence.

When She Was Bad is excellent and my favorite season opener. 🙂

I like them all, really, but I would say Lessons is my least favorite in retrospect because it promised me things I really, really wanted that the season did not deliver.

That's early S7 in a nutshell. It is the first half to an amazing season of Buffy that never happened XD
I have to say Anne and BvD. But the second one is much worse though. Still it's a tie.

I was going to post a poll with this, but I couldn't remember all the episodes! I'm not a fan of When She Was Bad, and I completely forgot what the season 5 one was.

I completely forgot what the season 5 one was.

So did I. When I got into a rewatch of the series with others, I got through all 4 seasons and still didn't remember it (after the one viewing I always skipped watching it again). When I got my season 5 dvds out and looked, I'd forgotten the episode even existed and dreaded watching it again (though it wasn't so bad a second time...still not good other than a few comedic lines of dialog).

I suppose I disliked it the most for how it messed with the lore of the Buffyverse. I can list silly Disney cartoons that stay true to their lore better than that. While Joss can make some creatively brilliant episodes that work with the lore rather than trashing it, this one was not one of them. And therefore I'm going to list BvD as the weakest season opener.

I want to say Bargaining.
Think it starts pretty good but I'm not a fan of the biker demons.

Actually think that many season openers are relative weak by BtVS standard.
It might have something to do with always watching them straight after the many amazing season finals during binge watches though...

Yes part 1 is much better of Bargaining I think.
BTVS? This is a hard one for me. I think I have to go with Buffy v Dracula. But I don't really hate it, I think it actually provides some interesting developments for Buffy and her character. I just think comparatively it doesn't work as well as the others. WSWB is my favorite season opener actually.

AtS - Conviction is my least favorite. The best is Judgment.
