Week 7: Heart of Gold

Unfortunately, what gets minimal attention here is that this is where Inara makes the decision to leave Serenity. It's alluded to in Objects in Space, which was the last episode in production order but was aired before this one (which was one of the three aired 7-8 months later after the cancelation), but the allusion is unclear because we hadn't seen this.

While I still like this episode, it's the one I like the least. At least it was this time. I'm not sure why. (Normally I'd say The Message is my least favorite, but not a bad ep.)

I did like their sharing a little (too little, but I'll take what I can get) lore on Companions. Other than that it was an okay ep. Perhaps my favorite (this time) was Wash and Kaylee going back to Serenity, which was a side scene, going to show the rest didn't interest me as much.

It was still fine but I wasn't excited to see it again last night and was glad to get through it so I could move on to the finale.

Don't have much to say about this episode.
Even if Inara isn't technically a part of the crew they all still easily accept this mission for her (with the exception of Jayne, of course). I like that.

Love that we get a little bit of information about Inara's history. Which is yet another story we didn't get to learn about with show being cancelled.

The whole assault / fight thing feels rather stupid and ridiculous from all sides.
Must have been a better way steeling that baby. But I guess that's just a way to get some action into the episode and not really the point.

Overall still a decent episode. It has its funny moment and serious moments as a good Firefly episode should have.
The gigantic "check battery" display on his fancy gun made me laugh out loud. Had forgot about that. So extremely unrealistic. 🙂

This episode shows that no matter what you do, some people are going to not get it.

Screen Rant did an article about "10 Firefly jokes that aged poorly". Among them: "So I told the boy, you take a clean woman's virtue, you take the woman." They argue how the joke wasn't even funny the first time.

Which completely misses the point that the AUDIENCE was never meant to find it funny in the first place. it's there to show how horrible Rance is. RANCE thinks it is funny, and his men either agree or are too afraid of him to show any disagreement.

But to me it says more (and not good) things about Screen Rant that they thought this was supposed to be funny.

Nandi saying that as long as the crew has brains and guns and Inara saying they have guns. Jayne not being in until he finds out what they are doing. Reliably shallow as always.

So, everyone's first time delivering a baby. Even River's.

Rance is a nasty piece of work and he got what he deserved.

Rather a downer ending, though, with Nandi killed, though she realised that both Inara and Mal had feelings they were keeping bottled up, and Inara deciding to leave.

Looking at the original run order, this would have been one confusing series to watch.
