Except the getting arrested part...America is so, so lame.

MINDEN, Nev. (AP) -- A 39-year-old woman was arrested last week on suspicion of smoking marijuana with her two teenage children. Douglas County sheriff's deputies said the woman was detained after they responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle. Deputies said the woman told them that she was teaching her son to drive, but they smelled marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

The suspect's son, whose age was unavailable, and 14-year-old daughter told deputies they had shared two bowls of marijuana with their mother.

The woman was booked into jail Tuesday on charges of child endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of a drug.

The 14-year-old was released to Child and Protective Services, while the boy was placed in juvenile detention.

TBH I think she a burke. I have no issue with weed but smoking in general is not something a parent should encourage.

If a parent smokes, and the kids smoke, why shouldn't they smoke together? I think it's better for the kids to do it with their family than go out and do it with people who could be a bad influence. And it's not like marijuana is medically dangerous.

I wish my mom smoked. I've smoked with friends and their parents before. The parents were generally very responsible, although I guess the most questionable thing they did was smoke pot with their kids. I think it's awesome.

Although in this woman's case they clearly should have done it at home and not in public.

Isn't encouraging/allowing their kids to smoke without reprecussions being a bad influence?

... but then maybe right after she shouldn't have taken her kids out driving.

Not to be like that but being a parent doesnt automatically make you a good influence. God knows I´ve met more than a few bad parents in my day. I wish it would be that way though. But on the other hand people would have different opinions about what it means to be a good influence anyway. So I guess that´s impossible in more ways than one. Is smoking marijuana a good or bad thing? I´m sure people would have different opnions on that too.

Wasn't saying there aren't bad parents, but you can be a "good" parent and still get high, IMO. :)
True, although other than the legal issue I don't think many anti-marijuana arguments hold up well.

The mistake was going out driving.. Don't go out driving when you're stoned and your kids are stoned. I hope she learned her lesson. Stay at home.

My parents are weed smokers, and so am I. I have no problem with it at all, probably because I'm always stoned..

*looks around nervously*

^^ I agree. My kids are getting to the age when they're going to want to try alcohol and pot. I haven't as of yet had the "talk" about taking stupid risks, but I will soon. I'd rather they do that stuff at home, where I can keep an eye on them and make sure they don't get out of hand, or go overboard, than go out in public to do it. That's just asking for trouble. I believe that responsible parents realize that kids (teenagers) will be kids and try to help them make the right choices. They also need to learn about consequences...and sometimes the best way to do that is to let them mess up. They're going to try new things, take risks, find the boundaries...that's what kids do. You have to trust them and give them a short leash. I don't think the mom above was wrong in smoking with her kids.....but she is wrong if she encourages them to smoke, instead of letting them make their own choice.

My Uncle smokes so it's cool I can get drunk and stoned and call him.

What a laugh !!!
Those deputies must have been smoking the stuff themselves, a used airbag in a car makes an excellent bong. And they are concealable...........or so I've been told....oops.

Okay, I've read the article and then all of your opinions and my conclusion is I still think the Mother is an idiot. I just....I can't comprehend how any parent could do that with their kids. I mean if you choose to smoke it, fine, I personally don't agree with that decision but it is your decision, but it can't be denied that the drug is damaging to one's person and to openly accept and allow and perhaps even encourage such a harmful thing upon your kids- not to be overdramatic- but the thought actually makes me sick.
I appreciate that kids will be kids and will at some point rebel (Though I have to say neither me or my Mom have ever done any form of drugs beyond the fact she was a social smoker in the late 70s and I was honestly never tempted to) and there are all these different views on how a parent should deal with them. I personally do not agree with one of the latest hot suggestions of 'if they are going to try stuff I'd rather they do it in their own home'- that doesn't allow the kids to make mistakes safely, it teaches them that it's not as bad as it could me "If Mom and Dad don't mind it in the house, how can it be too bad?". It sets a bad example and a bad start to a bad way of thinking in my honest opinion. Personally, you should teach your kids all that can in that regard, and trust them to make an informed decision. If they choose to go out and make that stupid decision without my knowing so be it- I would still know I had done all I could to example against it.

But this....this just seems like stupid inadvertent encouragement. And CF posted a picture of the plastic Mom from Mean Girls and that sums up my opinion of this woman entirely. The vibe I get from this is that by smoking with her kids, it's like almost putting her on a level with them, an 'I'm one of you' thing and that's not right. Be there for your children, but not their best friend. You're the parent and that's not your place.

Please be aware this is my personal opinion and no attack on anyone else's, but I think this Mom is anything but cool.

I never smoked weed and I'm pretty sure im not missing out on anything I could do without beer ^^

maybe, but with beer youve got the cons of losing control over yourself, doing regretful things aaand making yourself look ridiculous. with weed its different, you enjoy things, you open your mind to new points of view, create theories (that youdont forget afer the stoning wears off) it's a completely different experience.

Like Spoons, I think the mom's mistake was driving. If a cop catches you driving under the influence, it's a pretty big deal. People have even been taken in for sleep-driving while on Ambien. Smoking is something that you do at home where you can't be a danger to other citizens; it's not something that you do in a vehicle.

As far as smoking with her children goes, well, I know a lot of parents who have smoked cigarettes with their children or allowed their children to drink alcohol. In one case, a cousin of mine made his teen smoke pack after pack after pack (until she was sick) AFTER she burned the house down while trying to hide her smoking. He said he'd rather have her smoke in front of him than do something dangerous like set the house on fire again, but he also didn't want to make it comfortable for her. His plan was to associate smoking with danger and illness rather than with the thrill of rebellion. Another friend of mine allowed their kids (and their friends!) to drink, but only in a private home and only if supervised by an adult who had control of all of the car keys. They wanted their kids to experiment in a safe environment in which they could minimize the potential for harm. Other parents do the same with weed. Still others don't keep any illegal (or semi-legal) substances in the house or allow their kids to use those substances. My parents, for their part, never kept anything in the house, but they told me that if I ever wanted to experiment, they'd let me do it at home under their supervision. There are a lot of different schools of thought on this and I don't think one is necessarily right or wrong.

Lindsey's gonna laugh at me, but I agree with Joyce.

Granted, I don't smoke it, but I know plenty of parents that do. And I DO "get it". And I also don't think it's all that dangerous as far as "evil drugs" go.

I think the Mom is a FOOL. And I also think she DOES fall under the category of "bad parent" whether pot is all that bad or not. Maybe not the WORST parent category, but not on the good side....if we are assuming parenting is a teeter-totter game.

The general part that bugs me is that I find it alarming when parents flaunt the idea that breaking the law is only bad if you get caught.
My feelings on pot, in general, aside it's still against the law. I'm sure my Fuddy Duddiness is general knowledge by now, but I see no good froming from teaching your children that rules are things you're supposed to try and get around.
Like Joyce brought up, it's the same as telling kids they can drink at home with you. WHY? The drinking age is set for a reason, it's a law. Why tell them it's okay to break as long as they tell you? The lesson being taught isn't that it's okay as long as you're there, the lesson they hear is, "It's a stupid law".
Her second bit of stupidity IS the car though. That's teaching them TWO wrongs. One, break the law and smoke pot and THEN break the law and drive under the influence.

The girl is 14! What is she learning for goodness sake!?! Actually, NOW she's learned something...I'm glad the mother got caught. The Mom can't at least work on teaching them right from wrong (even if it's hypocritical) for 18 years? She needs some weed, she can go behind the garage for a few years and not flaunt it in front of her kids.

I'm not saying ALL kids who have parents who smoke pot are going to end up psychopaths who can't tell right from wrong. (We'll just IGNORE the fact that Spoons IS a psychopath and thus the poster child for why NOT to smoke pot in front of your kids! :lmao🙂 But, I am saying that surely it's not that hard when you choose to have a baby and keep it to TRY to be a decent role model or at least not flaunt that you're a giant law breaker in front of them for a wee bit. Some effort is in order here.

I'm a firm believer in the OPPOSITE theory than the Mom's who think drinking or smoking pot at home is better. I believe, if my kids are gonna drink underage or smoke pot...they'd better HOPE the cops catch them and NOT me!

I don't like what you suggest here, a lot of what you're talking about seems to be "Regardless of whether marijuana is bad, we're told by the government not to do it, so don't". I think teaching 'ask no questions' subservience is a far worse thing

btw i noticed that i didnt express my opinion about the mother thing in my firs post to this thread so here it goes.

even though i would love my mom to be like that, i cannot say that that's the attitude of a model parent. she could give them the choice of starting smoking on their own but she was instead encouraging them to do so, which i dot agree with. plus i think the kids were too young to know at all what they were doing, a grown mind is able to make that choice i dont think a kid mind can.

I agree with Lou. Regardless of how stupid the drug laws may be, they're still laws and we still have to abide by them. Don't like it? Start/join a lobbying group. But don't teach your kids that only smart laws are made to be followed, because then we get people flaunting drunk driving laws, seat belt laws, no-cell-phone-while-driving laws, and lots of people die for really dumb reasons.

I agree. This is not the way to rebel - nothing will change if you don't do it properly.
Hm. This is interesting. I think it's a bit different than alcohol, as alcohol itself is not illegal, but marijuana itself is. Of course, I'm of the opinion that drugs should be legal but that's due to my libertarianish views, not because I use them. 😉 And no, I haven't. 😛

Although, granted... I was raised in a family where we were allowed to have sips of wine from a young age, and once we got older we could sometimes have small glasses of wine on family occasions and the like. The goal (that so far has been accomplished) is to make the kids understand that alcohol is not inherently bad, and that it is okay. So, when I went off to college, I didn't go sneaking around alcohol because I was finally "free." (I just made out, but just with one guy 😉) I think that that type of attitude is a good and healthy one to have. My mom brought it into her child-raising because of growing up over in Greece and Italy for a lot of her life and grew up learning how to drink responsibly. Gotta say, if that's the case, Europe's ahead of the US. 😉 Then again, they still have royalty and that's just cool. ^_^

So, I can understand a parent taking that type of position with pot. However, in no way ever is driving after either drugs or alcohol a smart idea. 😛

All in all, I'm not sure whether I approve. But I can understand wanting your kids to be less inclined to go and "rebel." Not sure if that was the case with this mom, but, hey... 😛

Libertarian karma!
I don't know.. I guess the UK is a very different place when it comes to attitudes to drinking and weed smoking.

Parents are very lenient here, from a young age (13yrs old) my parents and my friends' parents really didn't have problem with us smoking weed OR drinking. My parents would sell weed to me and my friends and my boyfriend, they weren't surprised when I told the I was a smoker, and a weed smoker, I think it's just very common here, so it's not really a big deal. I mean, in Glasgow, Scotland, where I live, I used to babysit for drug dealers and the like, it's just a way of life here.

I stopped reading there because it's not only a viable option to deny that marijuana is harmful, it's becoming more and more the scientific option since research is dispelling most myths regarding marijuana. Really, the only reason I can see to be critical of her is because she was breaking the law with her children, but since it's a stupid law, here's me not caring.

That's so ignorant. Because it's a stupid law it's ok to break? What kind of parent would tha be?
