What are your pet peeves?

People who think they're better than others just because they have money or a better job. That doesn't make you better, than makes you lucky, jackass.

Not really. Not if they got that better job by working harder than everyone else, be it by putting in more effort at school to get better qualifications, or by working hard to make sure they perform better than anyone else in the job interview. That's not luck at all, that's just effort. If they put in more effort than everyone else, maybe they deserve to feel good about it.

Totally disagree. School isnt for everyone and qualifications mean jack, you're not a better person for having them and to think you are is one of my biggest pet peeves. I'll leave my colourful language off the forum but you can imagine.

I did very well in school, did well in uni too before I got sick so I'm not some whinging jealous kid. I had no control in what happened, same as many others. You ARE lucky you didnt get ill or injured and now cannot get your precious qualifications and put in more 'effort' than anyone else. You DONT know what others have been through and you have NO RIGHT to think we just dont try as hard.

I totally agree with you
I'm glad it's simple to you, but I have no trouble understanding why some have problems with it. Just because something is easy for you it doesn't have to be it for everyone. But at the same time a lot of people just don't make an effort. Can sometimes be difficult to know which one is the case.

I do a lot of mistakes but I hope I can be forgiven, at least to a degree, since english isn't my native language. I do notice that I make a lot more errors when I'm tired or not really concentrated.

I didn't mean people who don't have English as their Native language. 🙂 I meant people who grew up learning it and use it all day every day. And, of course, everyone makes some typos here and there. But if the posts are just plain lazy, then it's annoying.

To me there's a huge difference between feeling good from accomplishing something (having a good job for example) and looking down on others just because they haven't done the same thing.

Having a "better" job or a lot of money don't have to be just luck. Most definitely not. But it's also not only down to determination.

But honestly. Is there anything worse than people that hasn't deserved a lot of money, but have, and look at other people as less because of it? When it comes to attitude that is. There's definitely worse things in the world as such.

I meant people who grew up learning it and use it all day every day.
I get that. The point of not having english as a native language was mostly personal since it's happened more than once that people assume I have. But I still stand by what I said first. No matter if you've learned english from birth there's still people that'll have problem with writing and reading that doesn't have anything to do with being lazy. I'm sure most of them have felt stupid enough for not being good at it in their life as it is.

But if the posts are just plain lazy, then it's annoying.
I agree. But how often do you know why a post is misspelled or not? Not enough probably even if you of course can at times (people you know relatively well).

Kewl talk on the other hand... And by googling it I just now found out what kewl stands for. "A stupid way of spelling "cool". Made up by morons." I'm aware that it's not the best way of putting it but it really was the first hit I got. You learn something everyday. Even if I should have known earlier. Blame it on lack of interest.

god yes, I encounter a lot of these folks!
Smokers. I refer to it as "sucking on cancer-sticks". Three members of my immediate family have that toxic habit and they are never planning on kicking it. I hate it! Smoking kills over 400,000 Americans each year (not sure of the global statistic). It is breathing in toxic chemicals and then polluting the air around you so that not only are you endangering your own life but the lives of everyone around you (25,000 a year die in the US from second hand smoke). You can get more than *just* lung cancer from smoking. Oxygen keeps your heart pumping and your blood circulating and when you poison your air supply you are poisoning your entire body. I know that if I ever became a smoker I would die from it. Being in the same room with someone who is lighting up makes me feel as if I am dying. It hits me very hard and very fast. I hate when I see a mother smoke a cigarette and then pick up her child. Seeing the little kid pressed against someone that probably has the foul stench of toxic chemicals clinging to her skin and clothes.

The crap that is put in a lot of food. If you research the ingredients for many products you realize that you are eating bugs, road tar, and a host of other non-edible things that had no business being added to what is supposed to be the thing that keeps us alive and healthy.

People who are vociferous about their opinions yet have nothing factual to back them up with!

I've been studying in this and there's so much crap out there, I mean one has no idea... I have a hard time eating anything anymore unless it's organic.

I fully support organic veganism. :)
I completely agree that it is annoying when someone will spout their mouth off on a topic and have absolutely nothing to back it up. Whenever I am lecturing or debating with someone on an issue I feel strongly about I usually have the books I've read, the documentaries I've seen, the scientific studies I've researched, the online information, the words of people in respected fields to back up my claims.

I remember being really irked when I realized there was "beef fat" and "lard" in many cake frostings and twinkies and a lot of other food products I never would have thought to check before eating.

To me there's a huge difference between feeling good from accomplishing something (having a good job for example) and looking down on others just because they haven't done the same thing.

Well, here's my take on it: Somebody has to EARN my respect. If you're, for example, a janitor, then if you earn my respect, I'll respect you. If you don't, then I won't. If you're a surgeon and you don't have a personality that I respect, then I WON'T respect you. If you have a personality that I do respect, then I WILL respect you.

Being patronizing is, of course, never attractive. If somebody has a respectable personality then they should be respected, no matter their class, age, sex, race, career, religion, or any other type of discrimination is.

But, also obviously, you should be proud of your accomplishments, and you SHOULD be pleased with yourself. After all, in the long run, the only opinion about yourself that REALLY counts is your own. 🙂

Having a "better" job or a lot of money don't have to be just luck. Most definitely not. But it's also not only down to determination.

Well, I feel that GENERALLY when you work hard (very hard!) you get good results. But then again, in different countries (I'm an American girl), that may be very different. 🙂 Not everybody has the same opportunities.

But honestly. Is there anything worse than people that hasn't deserved a lot of money, but have, and look at other people as less because of it? When it comes to attitude that is. There's definitely worse things in the world as such.

Yup, as I said, it all ties down to that respect thing. Anybody, no matter how much money you have, can earn my respect by having a good personality.

Yeah, I'm still shocked that English isn't your native language, you're so good at it! 😀 And yes, some people have troubles with language, and it isn't always their fault, but seeing people write badly on the internet still gets on my nerves. :biggrin3: Not the PERSON, just the writing. My mind is pretty OCD, so I have to have all the letters in order and such or I have a mini-mental breakdown. It's kind of disturbing. 😀

I agree. But how often do you know why a post is misspelled or not? Not enough probably even if you of course can at times (people you know relatively well).

Well, there are some things that I look for. For example: If they don't capitalize the first letter of their sentences. If they don't have a period where a period should be. If they don't use contractions properly. If they SHORTEN everything (That's mega-annoying). It's like Kewl talk, only a bit different. I don't comment on it, but it makes it harder for me to take the writer seriously.

Kewl talk on the other hand... And by googling it I just now found out what kewl stands for. "A stupid way of spelling "cool". Made up by morons." LOL, I had never heard anyone use the word "Kewl" before, but I guessed what it meant pretty quickly (My youngin' friends and I all talk in "Kewl" talk when we're on Facebook or texting, etc. 😀 )

I get annoyed when people make false assumptions, take things too seriously or personally, or flip out for no real reason. People who get angry really easily and quickly are automatically on my "Most Hated" list. 😀

If I had been your age I'd been impressed by my english. ;) Now I'd say I'm about average or a little above average for being a swede. I hate how limited I feel when I try to express how I feel.
-Texting: in general it doesn't bother me, but the zombie-walk texting at school/work/grocery store/etc just bugs me to no end. Seinfeld did a sketch on Letterman that pretty much sums this up for me. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASFmLuGIr78&feature=fvsr"]Here's the link[/ame].
-People who don't put their shopping carts back in the shopping-cart area of parking lots. Just leaving them around the middle of the lot is bad enough, but if they're going to take the time to jack it up on the grass, why don't they just walk 10 feet the OTHER way and put it where it belongs?
-People asking "did you get a haircut?" when I obviously got a haircut. Actually, a lot of those pointless social gestures (or whatever they are). Like saying sorry if you brush against someone, or asking "how are you" when you really don't care how the person is.

Apparently, at the rate I'm going, I should just list "people" as a pet peeve. Dang.

I understand the haircut question though. I can be so oblvious with outward appearances that someone I see every day can dye their hair but I won't be sure whether to say I like it in case its always been that color.
^ Yeah, people generally get on my nerves, too. I need an "I hate PPL" t-shirt or something. 😀

Which is why my future career is going to be one where I can be very solitary. 😀

Fair enough. Obviously I made a bit of a generalisation, there are circumstances that stop great people getting the jobs/ opportunities they deserve.
Really the point I was trying to make was that one of my 'pet peeves' is people who do have every opportunity to succeed in life and instead be lazy and then whinge about it when they fail. Obviously if someone is affected by an outside circumstance such as an illness or injury then that's not their fault. I know because close friends of mine have been unlucky enough for this to happen to them.
I'm sorry that my original post did not convey that I was basically talking about lazy people. I'm sorry for any offense I have caused you.
The one thing I would have to disagree with you on is 'qualifications mean jack'. Unfortunately this is untrue, at least where I'm from. You need some qualifications to get even the most basic of jobs these days. Whether this is a good or bad thing is your opinion. I did have some exams soon and have been told that the next few weeks are 'the most important of my life'. It is a sad fact that todays society places a lot on qualifications and some jobs and universities will not accept you if you don't have them, no matter what other qualities you may have.
I also don't think I ever said that anyone is a 'better person' for having qualifications. Please don't embroider what I have said. On that topic I would largely concur with Washburne.
Is there anything worse than people that hasn't deserved a lot of money, but have, and look at other people as less because of it? When it comes to attitude that is. There's definitely worse things in the world as such.
I agree that looking down on people for whatever reason is not OK, so please don't make me sound like a snob.

You also mentioned that you got sick, so I would like to take this chance to say I hope you have got better since then 🙂

We obviously live in very different worlds. You get a better paying job here without qualifications, many people get turned down for being overqualified. So in my world they mean jack.
This may sound weird but I don't like being touched. When a family member puts their hand on my shoulder or stands too close to me, it makes me uncomfortable and feels weird. I am not a hugger or physical affection type of individual. I like my personal space.

Yeah, like, there are only a few people who I don't mind touching me, and those are my best friends. I don't like my relatives touching me, and I usually don't like adults touching me. I need my space. (Of course, in general, I try to keep myself and my life far, far away from my relatives. 😀 )

Most people don't seem to get that. Sometimes a friend will step too close and I involuntarily take a step back or my sister would pretend she is going to tickle me and I flinch (she will say something like "God, I wasn't going to hurt you"). I remember once a classmate poked me in the side in a friendly way when he was walking to his seat and I jumped and he ended up apologizing for scaring me but it didn't *scare* me.

I do that ALL the time. 😀 (The flinching for no real reason). It even happens with my closest friends on occasion. I'm generally pretty "touchable" (Group hugs are awesome 😀 ), but I feel pretty uncomfortable with a lot of people. Like, there's this nagging feeling that I get, and I always get really uncomfortable.

Oddly enough, though, I have a habit of standing ridiculously close to my best friend. I'm always all up on her. 😀 It used to be because I was pretty shy and my friend is really tough, but now I'm not so sure.

I dunno, I guess it's because I'm fine with touching people but I hate to be touched (By most everyone, I'm fine with my bestest best friends).

That reminds me of that Penelope Cruz movie. She gets motion sickness (during sex or in a moving vehicle) except when she is in control. She is fine when she is the one driving or "on top".

I get why your mate would freak out over someone grabbing his wrists. Our hands are so crucial. There is so much we wouldn't be able to do without them. It is like messing with someone's power center. People like to be ready for anything and able to utilize their bodies at any time. It reminds me of Seeing Red when Spike grabbed Buffy's wrists so that she wasn't able to fight him as well when he was trying to rape her. If a person is deaf they don't like having someone grab their hands because it is like telling them to shut up since they use their hands to express themselves.

Hanging up on someone.

I swear to bob, that makes me want to wring someone's neck! That is so unbelievably disrespectful and down right rude. I'm proud to say I've NEVER done it, but unfortunately I've had it happen to me before and it just totally pisses me off to no end.

Being told to calm down when I am calm, lol.

I'm not sure why but if I hear the words 'Calm down' when I'm already calm, that's when I become NOT calm. lol That practically enrages me 😛
