Hmm... what's the worst way I can hurt Buffy? ("bitch is gonna see a change") Well, I could already kill her because my chip doesn't work on her. Or, I can do something to myself, get a soul and get her back. Make her feel terrible for using me. And make me feel even more pain for what I did to her in the bathroom.

Therefore, I believe he went to get the soul. It is ambigous, yes... "Make me what I was before." "You want to return to your former self" so, who knows. But by that dialogue, I'm Nothing, I feel that he doesn't care about being a monster to her, or he wouldn't feel like he was monster. He's nothing because he can't be a man either, so he goes to the next best thing.

Plus: Beneath You: He told Buffy he got the soul for her. What more evidence do you need?
 
He could have told her that just to make her feel worse..it didn't have to be necessary the truth....
 
Despite what Joss and ME have said, I believe he went to get his chip out. The shock factor, as a viewer who avoids spoilers like the plague, was big...I thought he got way more than he bargained for. It just...feels wrong to say he went to get his soul back all along. I've watched these eps a couple of times over, and it still reads cleaner if Spike is trying to get the chip out!
 
I guess some people haven't voted yet, and the spuffy people are too afraid to stand up.

I think he wanted his soul back. As WatcherWes said he could already hurt Buffy with the chip in.

What's this suppossed to mean? I am a Spuffy and I am darn proud to stand up. Just wanted to clear that up.

~Buffy deserves a relationship with somebody with a soul. Spike got the soul, end of story. 🙂

~And even if it could be said that Spike wanted the chip out (I cannot say for fact that he did or did not... only my opinion) I think that the demon saw behind all of what he was thinking. The demon saw that he really wanted to be something with a SOUL, as he was before. So, the demon granted him the soul. It knew what Spike wanted, even if Spike didn't know it.

Just in case he did go to get the chip out, this still covers it. He really wanted his soul... so, that's my answer and I'm sticking to it.
 
He totally wanted the chip out, it was what was in his mind, but then... The demon gave his something else that I think he wanted deep in his heart.... But then he kept saying he *left* to get the soul... No, he didn't It was the chip, and he kept... twisting the story to get some of Buffy's affections.. -sigh- Whatever.
 
I don't really care to be honest. But the motives of a souless vampire come across different. Vampires are evil, so even vampires who are in love say evil things like calling her a bitch and "saying he'll teach her a lesson." I think the real revelation in this is how self centered most souless vampires are, either way he was planning on teaching her lesson or proving a point. As a vampire, he wasn't getting a soul to prove that he loves her, he got a soul to shove everything back in her face, to show that he is just as good as her. So either way you like at it, soulless Spike didn't have a good meaning selfless intent, he meant on getting revenge. So it had nothing to do with love, but more infatuation. Of course that all changed one he got his soul.
 
I've been thinking a lot about it since he flaunts his soul about a bit (and I love Spike. But he does 🙂 ). I thought at the time he wanted the chip out. I thought at the end, when he said, "make me what I was" he wanted the chip out. I think that it wasn't so he could get back at Buffy, because he could already (obviously. I mean, he did that). I think he thought he could get her out of his brain if he could be the vamp he used to be, maybe that the chip was making him soft. He might have gone after some of her friends too. But I think soul giving back dude saw something else in him, and gave him the soul, which is probably what he really wanted somewhere in his vampire heart of hearts.

I can't believe he was intending to get the soul, I mean, why try to rape someone and then go get a soul to be with them? It doesn't make much sense.

But I hate Spuffy, so I may be biased.
 
In an interview on the Season 6 dvd's Joss admits that he wanted James to play Spike as if he wanted his chip out but really in fact he wanted his soul back. Although he would have a soul he would be nothing like Angel.

I agree 100%. Spike was a souless, evil vampire who just so hapened to have a leash around his neck. He has never, ever been selfless in his un-life, so why start then?

Anyway, I blame the bad writing on this...
 
I think it was an either or kind of deal. maybe Spike didn't know WHAT he wanted, he either wanted the chip out so he could kill Buffy (and the rest of the gang) in an atempt to clear them from his mind, maybe even look up Dru and try to revert back to a big bad evil vamp. or he wanted his soul back, for buffy to show he's changed and that he really does love her. either way i think he just wanted to get out of the grey ( not half good or half evil but the whole nine yards). this theroy goes along with the demon seeing what it was Spike really wanted and may explain why spike never says chip or soul.
(i missed a few season 6 eps tho so i could always be wrong.)
 
Well, I'm a Spuffy fan...over Bangel that is...and I voted quite awhile ago. I believe with all of my heart that Spike wanted his soul back. Sure James was told to play it like he wanted revenge because they weren't sure where they were taking it but in the end I feel that the writers made the right choice. I say that because I feel very close to that character. I understood where he was coming from better than the others...and I just don't believe that he would have made a choice in favor of evil where Buffy is concerned. Not after what happened and where his head was. I guess it just depends on wether you get Spike or wether you even like him at all. I know that some have said negetive things in the past just because they don't like the way he LOOKS. So, to me it doesn't really matter much why people don't like him or choose to believe the worst in him. I just wrote this because being a Spike fan I didn't feel that some of the accusations against Spuffy/Spike fans were fair. But, everyone is entitled to their own oppinions. It takes all kinds.
 
I think that they wanted everyone to think he was gettig a chip, but wasent.
I cant member who but someone said that "He's giving buffy what she deserves, a relationship with a soul-person" I totally thought that aswell!
 
For the first half of the trials, I was under the impression that Spike was there to get his chip out. But underlying, I think there was this feeling of tortured wanting that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

At the end, I knew Spike was there to get his soul. Because of Buffy. Because that's the type of person Spike is, beneath all the bravado and leather. He wanted to give her the man she deserved. And you know what? I'm a Spuffy, SO THERE. Bite me.
