I didn't love Riley personally, but I suppose he was important to the overall narrative of BtVS. Plus, that scene in "The I in Team"? Almost made me a Briley 😉
I just started rewatching Season Five on my new DVDs, and I actually started to feel bad for Riley! Especially in "Out of My Mind" how he knows that Buffy doesn't really love him... that would be so painful, to love someone like Buffy so much but realize that she'll never love you as much as you love her. 🙁
He was really a decent guy though. Well, up until he started having Vampires feed off of him... which was incrediblely stupid of him, but knowing Buffy didn't love him back made him feel extremely bad.
To me Riley was just some eye candy for the viewers since DB was gone. Riley was just the rebound guy. He was right after the Bangel relationship and then after him was the spuffy relationship so it made Riley look like a really stupid and non-important character. He was just very boring to me and you could really tell, even when you first met him, that he wasn't gonna be around for long. I was surprised he even made it for more than a whole season
I feel for the guy...solid, normal guys are regularly blown off by women who want their "dangerous" guys, and don't realize what they're missing until it's too late (like Buffy)...oooooook, note to me...maybe that axe has got to be ground a bit more...
I got teary when Riley left. Remember back in season 4, Buffy and Riley are sparring and Buffy goes 'I won't hold back if you won't' then she dented him. Later she tells Willow 'I held back'.
Then in s5, Riley says that he's never held back with her. I think that was the cause of their breakup, not Riley's fault as much as all people hate him. It was obviously Buffy's trust issues.
I liked B/R much more than B/S. Spuffy justs irks me. Prob. cos you look at s4 and here is a guy where he doesn't even remember her name. They became friends then more so and that made it more real.
