What do the writers want us to believe about Spuffy sex?

and he's right...so I guess I can say I legitimately "fell" for something about Spike at some other level, not just looks, because, he is totally not my type. The character is brilliantly cast and crafted.

My daughter in law put him on her "list" (any Friends fans know what I mean)...Spike, the character, but not JM himself.

The writers and directors must have thought so too. He spent more time either shirtless or (implied) naked than any other cast member.

The majority of cast members had boobs... which does complicate things in the shirtless/naked department. At least for American TV. 😉

I stand corrected, but do with the writer's had made it clear, I mean, one flash shot of it would've answered A LOT!

No wonder he never believed her "no's", and that she had feelings for him. A slayer letting a vamp cuff her? I think that's huge.

yeah, I really agree - It makes the whole 'Trust' issue very interesting and not at all clear cut.

There is another "proof" for that. In the Bronze scene, when Buffy and Willow are sitting, talking, right before Xander and Anya come to ask them if they want to dance, Buffy tells Willow how sorry she is about being gone and busy. So Willow tells her: "it's okay. I know you've been tied up". Buffy makes a freaking face, like Willow is onto her. Of course Willow meant Buffy was busy. I mean, she was busy, elsewhere. But Buffy thought she meant something else. I find it funny.

Would Buffy really allow herself to be put in a vulnerable position in the midst of a sexual encounter (and I mean physically vulnerable, not emotionally vulnerable, which she obviously was)? I find that hard to believe, even in her messed up "I'm banging Spike" state...it was always made pretty clear that Buffy had to be in control. I'd find it hard to believe that she'd let Spike tie her up.

Sleeping with Spike might have been a way to cheat death...walk a little on the wild side. If she had allowed him to tie her up, he would have had the upper hand. Maybe that turned her on, being helpless to him.

Very good point!! This lends to my theory that Buffy couldn't really be herself until she was with someone who could "handle" her, someone who had as much (or close to as much) power as she did.

This is where I'm confused. Visually, they go out of their way to show us Buffy's in charge. Usually on top, often initiating, with him holding back, following her lead, asking, etc. In Gone, he's on top because she's invisible and it would be hard to shoot that scene another way, but for the rest of their Gone encounter she's "in charge".

That's why I never put the subtler hints together as her having let him have control moments.

I wonder if this is another ambiguous area that the writer's did on purpose, like in the end of S7...did they"do it" or not...to let us go with it where it best suited us. Knowing each viewer would interpret things according to their own need.

With the insights and information provided here, I'll need to rewatch things and see if it hits me differently this time.

But I think this is a critical enough issue in the Spuffy dynamic to have pretty serious implications.

But again, I could be projecting my own trust issues onto THEIR relationship!

Come on, why is it so hard to believe? Would you believe that Buffy would ever let Spike touch her in public? Like in the balcony-scene? If you havent seen it, you wouldnt believe it.
And in Conversation with Dead People she says something like she'd let him take her over.. I dont know the exact words.

edit: and she wasnt on top when they were under the rug.

Too tired to read the whole thread, so I'll just give one of my two cents 😉

I can't imagine where they did it and how, but I bet it was pretty imaginative. Spike has lived for over a 100 years, so I think he has had time to learn a lot. So yeah, I think it was pretty rough. And Spike was amazed by Buffy's animal behaviour.

But I think the fact that Buffy felt depressed and had sex with a person she loathed, while treating him like crap, that was the real abuse and kink in the relationship. She felt filthy, she had sex, new animalistic sex, with a person she hated, and I think that's what got to her and made her break down to Tara.

After all, Buffy had only had sex with Angel, Parker and Riley before, and I think they must have been... tame, compared to the kinky stuff Spike wanted to do, so that she was trying all these new positions and stuff, must have gotten to her in a big way as well, on top of her depression. And that she had sex with a person who had murdered and tortured (and probably raped) hundreds of people, must be extremely icky. And in a unhealthy way, hot.

That is the negative side of the Spuffy-relationship. But they had some moments. Just not enough for me to be a fan.

About what the writers wanted to show; They couldn't be too naughty, because the network would have said no. Also, they might not have wanted to have too much sex on the show. I myself saw them have sex on a balcony, use cuffs so I figure the writers showed that way, together with Spike's attitude and Buffy's shame, that some kinky stuff had gone on. Not necassarily with toys, but maybe.

And I have to say, that Spike looks and dresses like a male prostitute makes my fantasy wander without help...

I think Joss really wanted us to show us all parts and sides of Buffy. He took a big risk by letting us see this side of Buffy that we really hadn't delved into before. We were exploring a new Buffy who was dark. She was a bitca, she was abusive, she was using someone who was in love with her, and she desperately wanted comfort. I absolutely despised her this season, but I do understand what Joss's doing. I think it's important for fans of any show or any book or any movie to be able to see all sides of the main character. Very often it's done with supporting roles and what good does that do? To see your role model go down a dark path is definitely something hard to watch, and it took me a while to realize this, but it's necessary. Why? Because Joss wanted to show us all sides of Buffy. The good and the bad, the sweet and the dark, the cute and the vicious, loveable girl and the bitca. In this way it's kind of seeing how much we can truly take and see that the main lead is like us in many ways, that she's also selfish and caring and human. And that's what I think the meaning of this season and her sex life this season represented.
