I think Joss Whedon and other writers of the show did awesome with this episode as they had to write the script... write the music.. record all the songs and do everything they usually do in other episodes to get it completed. :biggrin:

Oh and can I say they couldnt have chosen a better actor to play Sweet 🙂

Yes! And the dance coreography too-not trivial! Musical theatre has a lot of parts. The episode was a huge accomplishment.
Did OMWF have to be a musical episode? Unequivocally yes.

Here's why: The things that were revealed through song in this episode could only be revealed that way. Buffy was not going to call all her friends together and say, "Hey, guess what? I was in Heaven and you bastards brought me back to earth." The songs faciliated the characters expressing what they were feeling, their innermost secrets. If this was a novel we could have read what the characters were thinking, but as this was tv, they couldn't do that. So a musical episode was a terrific device to communicate these things to the audience and each other.

I agree, Buffy. Forgot about that.... I didn't realize they had done that until I had watched the episode about 8 times, then I finally caught on... but still not until the end in Sweet's line when he says "All those secrets you've been concealing, say you're happy now... once more with feeling."

Like someone once said, "once more with Feeling" is the follow up to Hush, wherein when people stop talking they start communicating. The sheer wealth of information provided in OMWF could never have been conveyed in a normal episode with dialogue. There was just too much revealed

okay, first of all, id like to say i totally believe that its best as a musical, and was all best portrayed that way, and i love love love omwf! but, i am going to point out that as far as buffy not coming out and telling everyone things like her being in heaven, there could've been some other spell that xander or whoever did to make them reveal their secrets, but did not make them sing it.
 
Could OMWF been done as a regular episode and not a musical? I doubt it. It was written to be done in song, afterall.

Could the overall story of Season 6 have been told without a musical theatre episode within the 22? Why not, given the talent of the writers and their having creative freedom over multiple episodes (not just [HASHTAG]#107[/HASHTAG])? Not to mention their work in six other seasons of the show that didn't have a musical, lol. Remember Buffy expressed her feelings of being out of place back in the world to Spike in "Afterlife", to Willow in "Gone", and to Giles in "Grave", even if nothing said it like her songs "Going Through the Motions" and "Something To Sing About" in OMWF. The season wouldn't have been quite the same, but I think the ideas could have still been there. I certainly don't think the season as a whole would have been as good. Other episodes - for example episode [HASHTAG]#108[/HASHTAG], "Tabula Rasa" in the actual series - might have been quite different too. We can never know.

As to what actually happened, OMWF was a defining point in the season and the series. It was a vital part of what Season 6 was and I'll always be happy that it was done that way. For everything I said above, I can't imagine Season 6 without OMWF!
 
I think this episode was absolutely a perfect way for Buffy to express what being pulled out of heaven made her feel like.
 
I loved it. It showed that BTVS isn't all about brutal deaths etc. It showed the comedy side to Buffy. Plus, it was totally unique. On the downside though, it would make the show look a bit silly for a first time watcher.
 
I think Once More, With Feeling was great! It's one of the best episodes. It's so funny but it's still so personal to the characters. I like that 😉
 
I watched it tonight, and I watched it again, couldnt stop. Can't in words describe my feelings for this ep. It's the most perfect one through the entire series. If you study it, with artistic eyes, you'll find that each clip, that each cameraangle, that each lightsetting, that each move, is perfect. And the songs! What can I say? When Tara looks at Willow on the bridge and starts singing... "I lived my life in shadow"... my old hardened heart just melts like snow. And when Giles reaches out his hand to an unaware Buffy and goes... "wish I could be the father"... it melts away again. And when Spike falls down hon his knees with the deepest of eyes and his heart on a plate and sings... "you've got a willing slave"... I just shiver. And I feel his frustration when he later slams the cigaretbutt away and outbursts... "I'm free if that bitch dies"... Aaaaah, I could go on forever.

i love this episode because its the episode where the truth comes out about everything.its the episode where they cant hide their feelings,as they brake out into song and start singing how they really feel and what they really want to say.this was a good way for everything to be out in the open and for the storylines to grow,because now everyone knows what actually happened to Buffy,where she was, and how she feels now shes back.
 
I think it was the best episode of Buffy, ever. It showed the talent of the actors. I think the music was incredible!! With X & U dancing together was great. I loved everything about it. The choreography was great. How they kicked it off with B in grave yard dancing/singing with demons & all was great. I know G had some talent, from when he was singing & playing the guitar, during Halloween.
 
I agree that it had to be done as a Musical because it was the most fun way to have Buffy shout out her true feelings in song.

I have a question - How many people are truly happy that Dawn's song was interrupted by the puppet freaks??? I for one say YAY! I really didn't care about Dawn's self absorbed song.

OMWF is definitely on my top 5 favorite buffy episodes! I thought it was very creative and original!
 
At first before I had started watching Buffy , I had heard about this episode. And to be honest I had no idea how this would work . I knew about Buffy and what was going on but I wasn't interest in it. Then I ended up watching after it went off the air for good. So then I finally got to watch season 1 through 7. When I got to this episode. I'm not sure what to except. But after watching twice , I totally loved it. Yes it different then most show. But that's what makes it stand out. So in the end I do love this stand out episode.Would I change anything. Hmmm thats a tough question.
 
I liked this ep alot. Its one of my all time favorites.I agree with all those that say it was genius . My favorite scenes are where tara is singing to willow and the scenes right after that where xander is telling the rest of the gang they probably arent researching.
