What do you think about surgery

I’m curious to know your opinion about people who perform surgical operations such as an increase in breasts, buttocks, narrowing of the nose, or people who make injections of Botox. Briefly people who use surgical for their physical appearances. I’m wondering that because doing that isn’t seen as a good thing in France. The celebrity who do that are always criticized but I have heard that in America people don’t react like that. Apparently people exchange their surgeons and are proud to say that they have done operations. I want to say that I don’t say that to critic but I’m curious to know if it’s true..
 
I think it's sad if done just for looks (unless it's like recovering from burns and such), but I'm not typical.

Going strictly by my personal experience, I'd say most Americans don't think about it that much one way or another, but those I talk to also tend to be a bit different from the mainstream as well. I do share small talk with plenty of casual acquaintances, and it never came up. I do recall overhearing some men at a gym I used to go to complaining about beauty standards in women being ridiculous, and prefer women with curves rather than looking like china dolls or little boys (or words to that effect, it was years ago). They were talking about the fashion industry and Hollywood rather than cosmetic surgery specifically, but I believe one said something about "having boobs too big for a body that thin" or some such which probably refers to cosmetic surgery.

Shows from Hollywood show it differently, and it would make sense that it would be seen in a different light there than elsewhere (which gets reflected in their stories). I know I've seen some news stories about it (getting the surgeries for teens is what they usually focus on, and an archived example can be found here), and I heard it was a hot topic on some woman's talk show, and my impression is that for the most part people frown on it enough while being tempted (I'm sure they advertise through a variety of means) that it can gain and audience (thus advertising dollars), but not such a hot topic that there is that much on it. But I want to emphasize the focus is on parents (usually mothers who get plenty of these surgeries for themselves) who pay for their daughters to have them, and not on celebrities.

As for celebrities...they are generally excepted from the standards of the rest of us, so different standards apply to them. I think many if not most just want them to entertain us and thus get a lot more leeway. But I avoid most gossip mags and shows so I may have simply missed a lot of it. My understanding of the tabloids and gossip instead focus on the idiotic and outrageous stuff they do, people they're seen with, feuds (real and otherwise), and the like (and if it's really slow, then maybe one putting out the garbage while wearing a bathrobe, news you need to know 🙄 ). Which is strange now that I think about because they're often given free clothes and jewelry (so ironically some of the few people that can afford it get it for free!) because it presumably gets other people to pay a ridiculous price to get the same thing, so I'd think cosmetic surgeons would be sure to cash in on that as well, even if they had to be underhanded about it.
 
Strangely enough, the US does not have the highest proportion of people who have had plastic surgery. That honour belongs to Argentina. I think Michael Jackson was the poster boy for surgery gone wrong where he had to wear a mask to hide the fact that his nose had disintegrated and there is a TV show here called "Botched" about surgeries that have gone wrong. You often get women who have a facelift, then realize their shiny smooth faces are perched on top of a chicken neck, so that is the second surgery they get. Others get breast enhancement or reduction and others get liposuction to get rid of large quantities of fat.

There are people here who get plastic surgery and seem satisfied with the results regardless of what anyone else may think because people who are meeting them for the first time think they look the way they do naturally. Celebrities get it because they are in the public eye and they want to be seen as better looking than they naturally were and to them, it is an investment with a payoff that would include better movie parts or their record goes higher up the charts or in general, a bigger audience. Some people see it as a violation of God's will for them and others see it as taking responsibility for where God left off. Opinions are pretty much split here with some allowance for celebrities in the public eye.
 
I'm not against athough I wouldn't do it. It's kind of an extreme version of putting on makeup, all your doing is enhancing your looks and if you've got the money and the desire it's none of my business what you want to do. I am concerned because I heard many years ago that there is a very high suicide rate amont people who get plastic surgery. Some people are trying to change their outsides to feel better about their insides. I would hope plastic surgeons would have some training on how to spot these people.

If they had the training then they'd know who to exploit the most. Even in medicine it's about profits, not ethics.

Reminds me of my piercer; he once had a client whose two friends had brought her in and were quite obviously talking her into getting pierced. He turned her away, said he wasn't gonna pierce someone who didn't really want one, but was only being peer-pressured into it. There should be more people like that, in most industries.
 
The fact is in France, when a celebrity do a surgery operation in order to have a better looks, people have a tendancy to always criticize, saying that the person had a better look before or that the natural beauty is better. Some comment are really mean and I don’t know if it’s jealousy or if they really think what they say. I just notice that many French celebrities say that there is only in France that surgical operations are seen as a bad thing, and they say that, mostly in America, people aren’t so mean on that subject and it’s more common. And I would love to understand this difference of mentality !
 
Cosmetic surgery is amazing, if you have a qualified surgeon. I had a breast reduction when I was 19 and thank God for that! But I would NEVER have anything done on my face...too many people end up looking weird and alien-like. Besides, I'm cute enough as it is. 😛 In high school, it was normal for people to get nose jobs over the summer. (Usually, their parents would ask what they wanted for their 16th birthday...a car or a nose job)

Kanye West's mum died from having too many procedures done at one time. A lot of people assume that cosmetic surgery is easy peasy, like it's different from other surgery...which it isn't. Even if you have a qualified surgeon, things could still go wrong. Anytime you have general anesthesia, there's always a chance you'll never wake up. Or, you could end up looking like the Elephant man. It's a crap shoot, to be perfectly honest.
 
Having just had surgery on my hand a few weeks ago I can't imagine anyone wanting to go through it if it's not necessary. Live and let live though, if that's what people want to do then that's cool. Not for me though. I don't even understand tattoos, piercings and jewellery.
 
When I was shopping the woman's personal massager that I designed last year, I went into a few novelty stores to show the prototype. One of the women had a silicone implant in the shape of a heart on her hand. That was pretty cool. But some of the bodymod stuff I don't know about. Not sure how healthy they would be long term... but body mods make cosmetic surgery and tattoos look like child's play.
 
I've had major surgery and small cosmetic surgery. I hate healing after surgery, my body doesn't react well to surgery and I would never do either again if I didn't have to.
 
I think when it's over done it does not look good. I think sometimes it makes you look like you aged worse. Like Charisma Carpenter, her face looks not so great these days because you can tell she is getting botox/fillers. Same thing with Courtney Cox, she over did it and it looked even worse than just plain getting older.

Do you think people who become obsessed with plastic surgery eventually end up with a distorted perception of their own body when they look in the mirror, like they genuinely lose the ability to see it for what it really is? Because I see people like Donatella Versace and wonder how on earth she couldn't take one look at herself and realise that it was not going well!

Absolutely. I have an old friend, not even thirty yet, and she looks in her forties. She got a boob job at 18 and five years later started to complain that they weren't big enough, even though they were unnaturally big already; and so she got even bigger ones put in. She keeps doing her lips despite her youth...she looks freaking ridiculous for a supposed 28 year old woman.
 
Normally they just end up uglier and poorer.
Of course if it's for medical reasons (like sometimes people need a breast reduction) then that's fine 🙂

I think some of these folks probably have body dismorphic disorders like is the case for the extreme cases like Dontatella.

But sometimes for the normal run of the mill celebrity I wonder if it's like the cutting your own bangs thing where you are just going to cut a little bit to even them out but then its crooked and so you cut more and more until they are way too short and you realize you shouldn't have cut them to begin with. They probably start with a filler here and an injection there. And then they need another because the injection is uneven or too big or too puffy etc and then they end up looking unlike themselves.

That's what I think too. The extremity suggests that the psychological process is very similar to disorders like anorexia, only you rarely hear it talked about in a similar way.
 
My mom had some fascinating stories about her time as a model, and it sounds as if the entire point is to get the populace insecure with their looks so they buy the products to make themselves feel better about themselves. Cosmetic surgery is an extreme of that, and I consider it risky at best, and a dangerous scam at worst (that's not even counting the gross malpractice that is known to go on which is actually illegal), though I realize some cynically take part as an investment for a future they want to make for themselves.
