In Entropy Buffy tells Spike he should move on (from her), and that he can tell her friends about them. Then Spike sleeps with Anya and Buffy sees that. Xander goes to the Magic Box to kill Spike and Buffy after him to stop him from killing Spike. Then Spike clues to Xander (and Anya) that he and Buffy were 'together'. Xander bolts. Buffy sends Spike a mean mad look and takes off too. So what was Buffy mad at Spike about? -That he told Xander about them (after she told him he can)? That he slept with Anya (even though Buffy told him to move on and they were'nt actually together and she didn't really admit their relationship anyway)? What? In the next episdoe she's still mad at him and doesn't want to talk to him. She says to him that he shouldn't sleep with her friends. But she broke up with him and he kinda moved on!

Also, because he'd just slept with Anya. Buffy knew what Xanya were going through, and Spike just made everything worse. It was probably the worst way he could have interpreted her words.

Edit: Aww... *waves goodbye to the extra zero*

Have you ever heard the saying, "You never know what you have, 'til it's gone."?

Noy ONLY did Spike sleep with Anya(someone in Buffy's circle) BUT it was seen by others.

Even though the Spike/Buffy relationship wasn't public, it was STILL humiliating for her.

Plus he had hurt her best friend in the process.

How many of you guys would be OK seeing someone they had JUST ended a relationship with go off and sleep with one of your friends.

PLUS he told Xander at the WORST possible moment, when he was feeling betrayed by Anya to now feel betrayed by Buffy.

Emotions are very tricky, just because one thing is said doesn't mean that is how someone feels.

Buffy had to rid herself of Spike because it was destructive NOT necessarily because she didn't have feelings for him.

^ Yeah. I agree with BoTD. Emotions are tricky. How you claim to feel and how you actually feel are sometimes two totally different things.

Spike and Anya were completely innocent and within their rights in this scenario. Buffy and Xander had left them. They sought comfort in one another. People do it all the time. It's totally natural and human and to be expected. Thanks to the trio, they were also sort of victimized by the totally illegal peeping tom porn show.

I think both Xander and Buffy were really more angry at themselves than they were at Spike or Anya. After all, neither Spike nor Anya had done anything wrong. Xander and Buffy were just doing what people do sometimes and externalizing their anger. It's easier to feel betrayed and angry than it is to own up to feeling jealous of the person that you voluntarily let go and angry at yourself for 1.) letting the other person go and 2.) regretting it. I think that Buffy was more angry at herself for being hurt by the sight of Spike having sex with someone else than she was at Spike for actually doing so. She thought her relationship with Spike was unhealthy. She had done the responsible thing and ended it. So why did her feelings persist? Her feelings weren't "right," even if her actions were, and I think that's what really made her angry. I think Xander was going through something similar.

Basically, I think it was a miserable situation for everyone involved, but my sympathies are completely with Spike and Anya, who were really not at any fault on this particular occasion.

Ditto! So well said!!!
She still loved him, and him having sex with Anya was one thing, but then everyone saw it, and she got embarressed... Especially after it got discovered she was boinking him

I think some of you are pretty precise in your explanations. There were lots of things going on, emotionally, for all four of them. And in a way, as much as its possible for an evil decripit demon as myself, I have sympathy for all of them.

I'm not really contributing much to this, other than to say, you guys stole my thoughts and posted them before I had a chance to, bastards.

I do think, whilst possibly overstating the obvious, up until this point Buffy was still in a certain amount of denial about her feeling for Spike. Seeing him with Anya, whilst causing her emotional pain, opened her eyes to certain things she was perhaps trying to bury. Like her feelings for Spike. Like what she believed his feelings for her were. I do think in that moment though, she realised how easily Spike could hurt her, even though they were technically 'broken up', his actions were not exactly the actions of a wounded heart. And I think its in the episode after this one where she pretty much states this, or it is implied by her that Spike doesn't care about Buffy, Spike thinks he cares about Buffy.

Really though, he just wants some poonanny.(that's not even the word is it, lol)

Very smart statement, I think you're dead on with that assessment...

First of all he did not move on, Anya and Spike were both hurting and they found comfort in each other for a moment because they were drunk and depressed. Buffy was pissed because anybody would be. Imagine the guy you were banging five seconds ago starts banging one of your friends and you witness it. Regardless of the relationship of course you will be pissed at both parties. I think she deserved to be angry.

What I found interesting is that it seemed the old adage is true: be careful what you wish for.

Whilst I agree that Anya was not at fault in that particular scene, I think there was right and wrong on both sides in the ep. Yes Xander did hurt Anya but what she did in terms of the whole vengeance thing was too far and I don't believe he deserved that. She wanted to hurt him in the worst possible way. Well congrats, in the end, she did although she didn't intend it in that moment. She learnt hurting someone you love, even if they've wronged you so badly isn't satisfying.

Spike wanted some kind of sign that Buffy cared and in the end he got it, but in the process her hurt the woman he loved and in letting the cat out of the bag about their relationship, he adversly affected Buffy and Xander's friendship.

Because she was in love with him and he slept with someone else.

Cue the argument.

No argument here. Perfect explanation. She was jealous.

And to comment further, when Cangel said "Since when does a woman have to mean what she said", I think she was just referring to the fact that Buffy might have told Spike to move on, but of course she's going to be upset when he actually does. Jealousy and envy are very common human emotions. I could tell myself over and over that I'm done with the guy I just dumped, but I'm still going to feel something when I see him with another woman.

So if a girl says "I don't want to be anally raped", she might actually want to be anally raped? Or am I misinterpreting something?

No-one wants to be raped...by its very definition rape is an act forced upon someone against their will. For someone who cannot stand stupidity you sure manage to plumb those stupid depths...unless of course you are deliberately misinterpreting it for comedic effect...ha bloody ha...the comedy of sexual assault...bravo, brave revolutionary thinker...

yeah, i get that it was a joke, but i'm not much of a fan of the rape/sexual assault jokes
Sure, Buffy had told Spike she wanted it over, that he could tell her friends if he wanted, etc.
Doesn't mean that watching him have sex with Anya, and having Xander find out right then, wasn't painful.
It was completely tactless for Spike to tell Xander right there, when he was already emotional and furious.
I don't see why Buffy WOULDN'T be angry here...

^ Wait. Dude! Xander had just aimed an axe at decapitation level against a guy who was powerless to defend himself (due to the chip), and you expect the intended victim of said potentially lethal axe swing to be tactful? I love Xander. I really do, but he was wrong to try to kill a defenseless creature. I understand where Xander was coming from and, yeah, if I saw someone having sex with my hubby on the video camera, I might grow kind of murderous, too. Even so, I can't fault Spike for his lack of tact in this scenario. After all, he had just been physically attacked. If the only way Spike could defend himself in that moment was to get in a little emotional damage, then so be it. If someone ever tries to kill me, I doubt I'll be scanning my brain for snippets from the Miss Manners column. Spike was tactless, but he also had an axe to his throat for having what he thought was a private moment of comfort with someone who was more or less a friend. I'm inclined to give the guy a break on that one.

I really just can't find fault with Anya or Spike in this particular situation. It's not like they went out of their way to advertise what had gone on between them. They weren't trying to hurt anyone; they were just trying not to hurt so badly, themselves. It's not their fault that some nerds were spying on them. Under those circumstances, I can't blame them for reacting badly to Xander and Buffy. Not only are Anya and Spike both still hurt, but they have now also been humiliated in front of their entire social group (plus nerds) and, in Spike's case, nearly killed. Maybe they said some things that neither Xander nor Buffy liked to hear, but all they did was speak the truth. If anyone is to blame here, it's the trio for spying and Xander for attempted vamp-slaughter.

I don't think Buffy has to be happy about the way the truth of her relationship with Spike came out, but I also don't think she has any real right to be angry with him for telling someone. After all, it was his truth to tell, too. Obviously, it bothered him to be used as Buffy's behind-the-scenes-sex-slave. He told Xander as much, himself, in an accidentally unguarded moment. I think acknowledgment was psychologically important to him. As much as Buffy didn't want to see it, Spike was a person, too, and his emotions were on the line as much as hers. He had a right to react -- and even to react badly -- just as she did. He also had as much a right to tell others about their relationship as she had to keep it a secret. The relationship didn't just belong to Buffy; it was Spike's to react to, as well.

I can't fault Spike for his lack of tact in this scenario.
I didn't say I could fault him, either...but you're admitting here that he didn't have tact. Personally, out of anger for Buffy's actions, if I were Spike I would have told everyone way sooner. I don't blame him for blurting it out. As you said, the "relationship" (if we could call it that) was his, too.

But I also can't blame Buffy for getting angry about it. She was emotionally unstable, hating herself for what she was doing, and personally, I think it was kind of repulsive that Spike let her do this over and over again. Sure, he was in love with her, would do anything to get close to her, yadda yadda yadda, but he knew how upset it was making Buffy. Can we blame her for not wanting to tell her friends? She KNEW what she was doing was wrong. It was self-punishment, in a lot of ways. It wasn't about her being all secretive because she was having a ball and didn't want her friends to ruin her fun...she didn't want her friends to look at her and see what she saw when she looked in the mirror. That's a very different motivation, and maybe it was still selfish, but definitely not for the same reasons. I sympathize with Buffy here. Spike was indulging, Buffy was desperately trying to feel something.

I think she was getting to the point where she could have told her friends, which is why she told Spike to go ahead and tell if he wanted. But in THAT way, in THAT situation, when Xander was hating Spike a hundred times more than usual and completely over-emotional about Anya...to tell him right THERE, hell, I would have been fuming too.

Yeah, it was sad to see Buffy hurt but (pleasedon'thurtme) I had a sense of satisfaction and I was saying, "Yeah, you deserved that." towards Buffy when she was angry at Spike outside of the Magic Box. Another little thing I just feel like saying is that contrary to how everyone thinks why Spike told everyone about him and Buffy, I think he was defending Anya. Xander was berating her and treating her like trash even though he had done something really terrible to Anya. Just my two cents on that tidbit.

But in other words, yeah, Buffy was in love with Spike. She was jealous. End of story.
EDIT: Okay, yeah, it was a lot more complicated then that, but to put it simply, Buffy loves Spike.

Yes, that says alot, Buffy was indeed in love with Spike, so here you go. If she wasn't, she wouldn't react this way
