[Mr Trick]

Alien Romulus - 5.5/10

For about an hour it was very solid and seemed to be doing something different with the Alien franchise. In the second half of the movie it made dumb decision after dumb decision and played it way too safe. The characters were forgettable too outside of the main pair. I'm more mixed on the effects too than some people. I did find some of them ropey.

The Changeling (1980) - 8/10

Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice! - 7/10

Mostly an enjoyable nostalgic romp (nice choice using practical effects), which felt like a fitting sequel to the original. The returning cast members were on strong form and the new additions all pretty much added something. Dafoe and Bellucci's characters could have been cut from the movie, but I did enjoy both characters at times and you could tell the actors were having a blast. Justin Theroux was fantastic fun, and his purposal was super cringe but maybe the highlight of the movie 😀 By the end there was too much going on and the sequel bait ending was a bit cheap. Also marks for the creative way they avoided having Jeffrey Jones in the film😉

There are times when it is more style than substance, but who cares when it is this stylish and entertaining

Longlegs - 5.5
I was disappointed in this. It does create a really disquieting mood and Maika Monroe is good, but it was all atmosphere with nothing behind it so it felt more like a hip exercise rather than a real horror film. And Nic Cages's performance belonged to a different film !

Watched that new unnecessary sequel/addition to the Beverly Hills Cop universe from Netflix.

I liked it, I do not have high standards for fiction. 7.5/10

I read the book earlier in the year, and Maggie Smith dying finally prompted me to watch the film. I prefer the book, but the film did have a few more comical moments.

A rather different take on the franchise. More... realistic? For want of a better word. There did seem to be some parts where it could have been a bit faster-paced.

Where does he get all of those wonderfully cute Catwomen? 😀

Not as good as the first one
Even though it was obvious they were setting up Paul to be the messiah it still felt rushed when it actually happened, and the inevitability of it meant there was no real tension at any point unlike in the first film.
And all the lingering facial close ups must have added about an hour to the running time !
But it was very cinematic so I do think I would have enjoyed it more if I had seen it at the cinema

Lowkey but funny and moving with another good performance from Rachel Sennot

Enjoyed it much more than the first film. I still think Art is an overrated villain, and it was a bit on the long side. I did like the other characters and it was very inventive at times.

Witchboard 3: The Possession (1995) - 3.5/10

Not sure if I like this one more or the second one? The acting was a bit better in this one, plus it had the whole devil thing going on. The mirror scenes with boring ass hero Brian trying to reach his girlfriend from the other side were good campy fun! 😛 The first movie still the most fun. Onto the 2024 Witchboard?...
